Three wins in nine tries for the young guys. But that didn't stop some key individuals from performing well.

Las Vegas 6    Reno 8

Fifteen hits for the 51s in this one. David Cooper was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Brett Lawrie went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk. Ryan Budde homered and a bunch of other org guys had multi-hit games.

Luis Perez started and went four allowing two runs on three hits and three walks against seven strikeouts.

Reading 6    New Hampshire 1

Ehh, not much good in this one. Moises Sierra, Adeiny Hechavarria, and Travis D'Arnaud all had a hit. So there's that.

Joel Carreno started and got beat up. Well, he beat himself up a fair bit too. Six walks and six hits in five innings produced five runs. He struck out seven, though. Suffice to say, [spoiler alert!] none of the three stars came from this affair.

Dunedin 1    Jupiter 2

The D-Jays dropped one to Jupiter (sorry, I know. Train is horrible. Excruciatingly terrible- I shouldn't have done that) but don't blame Drew Hutchison who allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings. He didn't walk anybody and struck out seven. Hutchison is clearly showing himself to be a top 100 prospect in MiLB.

Nine hits but not much to show for it at the plate. That said, A.J. Jimenez went 3-for-4 with the only RBI. We haven't discussed him much, probably due to D'Arnaud's explosion but Jimenez has his average up over .300 again and is showing good plate discipline. He's precisely where you'd want him to be.

Lansing 8    West Michigan 4 (Game One)

Well this one was a corker. Through the first six innings of the scheduled seven innings affair, the Lugnuts were being shutout on no hits and just two walks. Then, the top of the seventh brought three singles, two errors, and a passed ball. Result: four runs for a tie game. Then, in the eighth, four more for an 8-4 triumph.

Carlos Perez had a pair of hits and drove in a run while Oliver Dominguez smacked a two-run homer. Markus Knecht walked twice and was picked off both times. Tippy Martinez was not in the building.

Tyler Powell started and allowed four runs through four innings. That's about it.

Lansing 3    West Michigan 2 (Game Two)

The Lugnuts completed the sweep in a shortened affair (six innings). The Lugnuts outfield did all of the damage in this account for all four hits (two from Jake Marisnick), both RBI, two stolen bases, and an outfield assist.

Egan Smith went the (odd) distance in this completing all 5.1 innings on two unearned runs and four hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Vancouver 0    Tri City 6

The less said about this one, the better. Jonathan Jones had two hits and no top pitching prospects were involved.

Bluefield 12    Burlington 2

Now this is more like it. Noah Syndergaard continued his impressive debut with five innings of one run ball. He allowed two hits and one walk against five strikeouts. In five appearances as a starter, Syndergaard has posted a 28:5 K:BB and four runs in 23.1 innings. He'll be 19 in a month.

Lots of hits in this one. Chris Hawkins was 2-for-4 with a walk, triple, two runs and three RBI.

GCL Blue Jays 3    GCL Yankees 8

Alexys Rodriguez provided the offense in this one with a 3-run HR, his first of the year. Dickie Thon was 0-for-1 with two walks while my personal favourite GCL Jay, Jorge Vega-Rosado was 1-for-4 with a double.

Of all the highly touted 2010 pitching draftees, Griffin Murphy is the one having the hardest time adjusting to pro ball. Murphy allowed five runs on five hits over four innings while striking out just two. At least we've got Syndergaard, Nicolino, and Sanchez to fall back on.

If anyone needs to be freed, it's Cooper.  Find a spot for him, please.

I know everyone is calling for Lawrie's promotion but how about David Cooper:

.373/.441/.572 with a 43/31 BB/K ratio on the season.  And he is hitting .390 in his last 10 games.  Sure he could hit more taters, but he does have 41 doubles.

There is really starting to be a logjam.  Between Cooper, Lawrie, Snider, Thames, EE and Lind there are too many bats - particularly left handed ones.

Clever headline playing off the famous old "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain" cliche, but if we're gonna be poetic, let's stay in rhyme!

Syndergaard and Hutchison
They won't give up a run

nah, that sucks. Anyone else?

Syndie and Hutch and nothing else much?

Hutch and Syndie--even if it's windy?

Next up: some light verse commemorating the DP combination of Sobelewski, Hechavarria and McDade, in the spirit of "Tinker to Evers to Chance."

That should keep people busy for a while.

Syndergaard & Lawrie both made BA's Hot Sheet this week. It notes that Syndergaard hit 97 last night, and was usually around 94.

This got me thinking...what Jays prospects have legit to make the Top 100 prospect list heading into next season.

Done Deals:
Lawrie (If he qualifies next season)
d'Arnaud
Marisnick
Hutchinson
Gose
Alvarez

Very Good Chance
Syndergaard

Will be considered
C. Perez
Norris (If signed)
Nicolino
McGuire
Sanchez
Beede

So bottom line...WHOA!

Hey, why not (with apologies)

"These are the rarest of possible words:
        "Sobelewski to Hechavarria to McDade."
Not the usual outcome of a grounder to third:
        Sobelewski to Hechavarria to McDade.
        Ruthlessly bursting a broadcaster's bubble,
Tangling his tongue with a 5-6-3 double,
Syntax that adds up to triple the trouble,
of "Tinker to Evers to Chance."

Challenge accepted, sirrah!

These are the sweetest of possible words
Sobelewski-Hechavarria-McDade
Trio of infield, free as Jay birds
Wherever a game's to be played

Don't care what in hell is a gonfalon bubble?
As long as a Red Sock hits into a double!
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble
Sobelewski-Hechavarria-McDade

(So there.)

finch - the only 2 in the system now on your "will be considered" list who really will be considered are McGuire and Nicolino. Perez has been mediocre both on offence and defence and Sanchez far too inconsistent.

ayjackson - Friday, July 29 2011 @ 05:02 PM EDT (#239745) #
I think a Hechavarria-Sobolewski-McDade double play is more likely, no?  Oh, I get it....the switch was on.

Anyone knows what Bluefield's Kenile Santanna throws? I know that he does not throw strikes often.

Excellent versifying. Syntactically intact, and funny to boot.
Sano - Friday, July 29 2011 @ 05:27 PM EDT (#239748) #
Don't know why we'd rate Syndergaard over Nicolino.  Nicolino's been just as impressive at a higher level, is just as young and is a LH SP to boot.
Sano - Friday, July 29 2011 @ 05:30 PM EDT (#239749) #
Also, is Hutch really that impressive stuff-wise?  I love his stats but I just haven't heard the same kind of gushing like we've had for Alvarez for example.

To be fair, Syndergaard (18) is actually a year younger than Nicolino (19) from a scouting perspective.

You can probably include Hechavarria and Thon under the list of guys who might warrant some consideration but ultimately won't make it.
DaveB - Friday, July 29 2011 @ 06:25 PM EDT (#239751) #
Continuing on the theme mentioned elsewhere of the Jays' excellent strategy in stockpiling young "up the middle" talent, two new shortstops are now playing for the GCL Jays. Former South Carolina SS Peter Mooney started at shortstop today (1/4, a triple I think) while Thon was DH. Canadian SS Justin Atkinson of Surrey, BC played his third game at 3B. Former College SS Chris Peters played 2B while former Juco SS Chino Vega, the usual 2B, got a day off. Some of these guys are going to have to be moved up to Bluefield or even Vancouver.

Mooney is a terrific defensive SS, fast hands and nimble. Very John McDonald-ish, IMO. He's under-sized and may have to move to 2B eventually. It all comes down to the bat for him but he has shown a little bit of pop in both Juco and NCAA.

Dave B excellent!

You're a poet and you don't know it
Your feet are Longfellows and they smell like the Dickens

(With apologies to whomever I stole that from and DaveB - who's feet - his mother assures me - don't stink like the Dickens.)

TheBunk - Friday, July 29 2011 @ 08:30 PM EDT (#239757) #
If signed, Daniel Norris will almost certainly get top 100 consideration as he was considered to be about the 14th or 15th best prospect in what was a very strong draft.
finch - Friday, July 29 2011 @ 09:32 PM EDT (#239758) #
Hutchison was already on Keith Law's midseason Top 50 Prospect list and BA mentioned that he just missed out. So there has been a TON of positive banter about him
