Three wins in nine tries for the young guys. But that didn't stop some key individuals from performing well.
Fifteen hits for the 51s in this one. David Cooper was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Brett Lawrie went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk. Ryan Budde homered and a bunch of other org guys had multi-hit games.
Luis Perez started and went four allowing two runs on three hits and three walks against seven strikeouts.
Ehh, not much good in this one. Moises Sierra, Adeiny Hechavarria, and Travis D'Arnaud all had a hit. So there's that.
Joel Carreno started and got beat up. Well, he beat himself up a fair bit too. Six walks and six hits in five innings produced five runs. He struck out seven, though. Suffice to say, [spoiler alert!] none of the three stars came from this affair.
Dunedin 1 Jupiter 2
The D-Jays dropped one to Jupiter (sorry, I know. Train is horrible. Excruciatingly terrible- I shouldn't have done that) but don't blame Drew Hutchison who allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings. He didn't walk anybody and struck out seven. Hutchison is clearly showing himself to be a top 100 prospect in MiLB.
Nine hits but not much to show for it at the plate. That said, A.J. Jimenez went 3-for-4 with the only RBI. We haven't discussed him much, probably due to D'Arnaud's explosion but Jimenez has his average up over .300 again and is showing good plate discipline. He's precisely where you'd want him to be.
Lansing 8 West Michigan 4 (Game One)
Well this one was a corker. Through the first six innings of the scheduled seven innings affair, the Lugnuts were being shutout on no hits and just two walks. Then, the top of the seventh brought three singles, two errors, and a passed ball. Result: four runs for a tie game. Then, in the eighth, four more for an 8-4 triumph.
Carlos Perez had a pair of hits and drove in a run while Oliver Dominguez smacked a two-run homer. Markus Knecht walked twice and was picked off both times. Tippy Martinez was not in the building.
Tyler Powell started and allowed four runs through four innings. That's about it.
Lansing 3 West Michigan 2 (Game Two)
The Lugnuts completed the sweep in a shortened affair (six innings). The Lugnuts outfield did all of the damage in this account for all four hits (two from Jake Marisnick), both RBI, two stolen bases, and an outfield assist.
Egan Smith went the (odd) distance in this completing all 5.1 innings on two unearned runs and four hits. He walked two and struck out three.
The less said about this one, the better. Jonathan Jones had two hits and no top pitching prospects were involved.
Now this is more like it. Noah Syndergaard continued his impressive debut with five innings of one run ball. He allowed two hits and one walk against five strikeouts. In five appearances as a starter, Syndergaard has posted a 28:5 K:BB and four runs in 23.1 innings. He'll be 19 in a month.
Lots of hits in this one. Chris Hawkins was 2-for-4 with a walk, triple, two runs and three RBI.
GCL Blue Jays 3 GCL Yankees 8
Alexys Rodriguez provided the offense in this one with a 3-run HR, his first of the year. Dickie Thon was 0-for-1 with two walks while my personal favourite GCL Jay, Jorge Vega-Rosado was 1-for-4 with a double.
Of all the highly touted 2010 pitching draftees, Griffin Murphy is the one having the hardest time adjusting to pro ball. Murphy allowed five runs on five hits over four innings while striking out just two. At least we've got Syndergaard, Nicolino, and Sanchez to fall back on.
