Tacoma 12 @ Las Vegas 2 – Boxscore
Opposing starters Chris Seddon and Scott Richmond each threw over 105 pitchers (108 and 109, respectively), with the former faring much better. Seddon gave up two runs over eight innings. The 51’s only touched him for six hits, two of which came from frequent flier Mike McCoy and another two of which came from backup catcher Ryan Budde. Manny Mayorson and David Cooper got the other hits, with Mayorson and Budde scoring the runs. Adam Loewen and Ryan Shealy drew walks, while Ramon Vazquez and Chris Woodward had off nights at the plate, each going 0-for-4 and grounding into double plays twice.
Richmond gave up four runs over 6 innings to fall to 4-6. He allowed nine hits and two walks, along with a two-run homer to Marcus Tuiasosopo. Richmond did strike out nine batters. He turned the ball over to BJ LaMura, newly promoted to add a fresh arm to the bullpen. LaMura’s introduction to the thin air of the Pacific Coast League was a rough one. He struggled through 1 inning, giving up five hits and two walks. Three of those hits were home runs and he surrendered seven runs in total, to leave his ERA at a massive 63.00. Wil Ledezma gave up an unearned run in his inning of work. Then, with the bullpen taxed because of Drabek’s effort on Friday, the 51’s decided to save their arms and called upon Jason Lane to pitch. Lane was up to the task, with a 1-2-3 inning that included a strike out of Ryan Langerhans.
Portland 5 @ New Hampshire 9 – Boxscore
Robert Ray gave up all five runs over 6 innings, before Ronald Uviedo pitched 2 hitless innings of relief to pick up the win and Yohan Pino closed it out with a hitless frame.
Adeiny Hechevarria had a strong game in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with a walk, although he didn’t score a run. Anthony Gose was hitless, but he worked two walks. Travis d’Arnaud had a pair of hits, including a clutch 3-run home in the bottom of the eighth to turn a 6-5 lead into a four-run margin. Mike McDade had one hit in five at-bats, but it was a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. Ricardo Nanita had a hit and Craig Stansberry went 0-for-1 with three walks. Yan Gomes had a double and a homer, while Mark Sobolewski and Moises Sierra each had a pair of base hits. The Fisher Cats went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, or the margin of victory could have been much higher. Gose stole his 33rd base of the season.
Dunedin 4 @ Tampa 7 – Boxscore
Tampa had a 4-2 lead after an inning and, although the offences settled down after that, Dunedin lost their starter and Tampa was able to win the game without too much worry. Asher Wojciechowski fared a little better than Kyle Drabek did the night before, but he was also out of the game before completing an inning. Wojciechowski went 0.2 innings and allowed four runs. He gave up four hits and a walk. Matt Wright came in and gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits over 3.1 innings. Wright struck out two. Scott Gracey gave up a run on three hits and a walk over 2 frames. Anton Loup gave up three hits and a walk over 1.1 innings, but Steven Turnbull came in with two runners on and stranded them both.
Unfortunately, the only time at which the D-Jays led the game was during the top of the first, as they were never able to get back to even footing after falling behind. Sean Ochinko hit a two-run homer in the first – his 10th of the year, to reach double figures – and finished the night 2-for-3 with a walk. No other D-Jay reached base multiple times in the game. Justin Jackson, A.J. Jimenez, Jon Talley and Brad McElroy each had hits, while Kevin Nolan and Ivan Contreras also drew walks. McElroy also stole a base, but unfortunately the team was 0-for-5 when hitting with runners in scoring position.
Great Lakes 2 @ Lansing 3 (10 innings) – Boxscore
Egan Smith went 5 innings and allowed one run on seven hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six. Over 2 innings, Matt Fields allowed an unearned run, on an error that he made himself. Dustin Antolin had 2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts Shawn Griffith picked up the win with a scoreless top of the 10th.
Lansing only had four hits on the afternoon, but worked ten walks off the Great Lakes pitchers. K.C. Hobson had two of the hits – a single and a triple – while Jake Marisnick added a double and Michael Crouse a single. Hobson, Marisnick, Marcus Brisker and Matthew Nuzzo all drew walks. Crouse worked three walks, as did Marcus Knecht. Marisnick scored the winning run by leading off the bottom of the tenth with a double. After Knecht was walked intentionally, Hobson grounded out to the right side and advanced the runners. Crouse was walked intentionally and then, in an illustration of how that move can backfire, Matt Nuzzo followed up by working a game-winning walk.
Vancouver 11 @ Salem-Keizer 9 – Boxscore
Ben White allowed three runs over 1.2 innings, before turning the ball over to Travis Garrett, who allowed a single run over 3.1 innings. Alex Pepe surrendered a pair of runs and Alesone Escalante allowed three, although he struck out four. Escalante’s difficulties meant that Philip Brua entered the game for the one-out save, his first of the year.
Bryan Kervin was held hitless, as was Jonathan Berti, but every other Canadian had at least one hit. Kervin drew a walk and Berti worked a pair of free passes. Jonathan Jones was 4-for-6 and Balbino Fuenmayor was 3-for-6. While they were busy rapping out singles, Stephen McQuail added a double and a three-run homer and had 3 RBIs. Randy Schwartz was 2-for-6 with 2 RBI and Nicholas Baligod had two singles, two walks and three runs. Eli Boike and Luis Hurtado each had a pair of singles.
Danville 5 @ Bluefield 4 (10 innings) – Boxscore
While Bluefield lost the game in extras, it was impressive enough they managed to get the game past nine innings in the first place. Bluefield worked four runs off only three hits. Art Charles had a double, while Chris Hawkins and Aaron Munoz each had singles. Gustavo Pierre worked two walks and Kevin Pillar scored twice without reaching base via a hit or a walk. The Blue Jays were only 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Ajay Meyer gave up two runs over 4 innings and Myles Duvall gave up a pair, one earned, over his frame. Andrew Sikula pitched three scoreless innings and Ian Kadish pitched a scoreless ninth, after entering the inning with two runners on base. However, he left a runner on base in the 10th and Milciades Santana allowed him to count to give the Braves the extra-inning victory.
GCL Blue Jays 1 @ GCL Tigers 3 (7 innings) – Boxscore
Deivy Estrada threw a complete game in his second start for the GCL Blue Jays. Estrada threw 6 innings in a shortened 7-inning affair where the GCL Tigers edged out a 3-1 victory. Estrada allowed six hits, a walk and three runs, but struck out seven. The GCL Blue Jays only had two hits, one by Jorge Vesa-Rosado and the other by Chris Peters, the third baseman. It seemed like Vesa-Rosado was in the center of everything yesterday, as he also reach base with a walk and scored the Blue Jays only run. He stole his second base of the season, but also got caught for the second time and got picked off (I assume they are not double-counting that). Vesa-Rosado was also charged with his second error.
