There were two off-days, one scheduled and one not, and an extra game from yesterday. Meanwhile Dunedin wrapped up the first half of their season, and Griffin Murphy dazzled in his pro debut.

Las Vegas 16 at Reno 8

For everyone wondering about whether 35 year old veteran x who's hitting .330/.380/.570 in AAA is suddenly any good,  I present to you... the Pacific Coast League ladies and gentlemen! It was 16-2 Las Vegas at the end of four, and after that I guess they were just playing out the string. The 51s had 51 minus 32 hits, which is still a fair number, and Eric Thames had four of those, starting out 4/4 before cooling off to finish 4/6. They were all singles. David Cooper went 1/4 with 2 walks, but the one hit was a 2 out, 2 on bomb. Jason Lane and Manny Mayorson both had 3 hits, while Adam Loewen, Chris Woodward, Ryan Shealy and Kevin Howard had 2. One of Mayorson's was a grand slam, and he finished with 6 RBI. Meanwhile Rey Gonzalez's 3rd PCL start was his worst. He made it through 6.2 innings but surrendered 7 runs in the process. That he didn't strike out anyone didn't help, nor did the 4 walks and 10 hits.

Altoona at New Hampshire - Postponed

Check out Gerry's New Hampshire piece in the interim!

Dunedin 6 at Brevard County 3

Not quite as much shock and awe in this one, but the D-Jays, like their AAA counterparts, jumped out to an early lead they would not relinquish, in this their final game of the FSL first half. The D-Jays got two in the third on a Brad McElroy walk followed by a Kevin Nolan double and Ryan Schimpf single. They struck for one in the 6th (Brian van Kirk HR), 7th (McElroy single, SB, groundout, wild pitch) and two in the eighth (HBP and Kevin Ahrens home run.) McElroy had 2 hits, a walk and a stolen base, and Van Kirk and Ahrens both had a single and a round tripper. AJ Jiminez walked, was hit by a pitch and stole two bases, while the Ochinkshow was 0 for 5 hitting cleanup. Deck McGuire put in a solid effort starting, allowing only an unearned run on 6 hits, with 4 walks and a strikeout. He was lifted after getting one batter in the fifth though, after being hit in the leg by a ground ball. No word yet on the severity. Dustin Antolin was good in relief, Scott Gracey gave up the only two earned runs against Dunedin, and Wes Etheridge pitched a perfect 9th for his 25th save.

Lansing - MWL All-Star Break

Vancouver 5 at Everett 8

The Canadians got lit up in this one, no two ways about it. Zack Breault was touched for five runs, all earned, in 4.1 innings, surrendering 9 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Nicholas Purdy also was lit up, giving up 3 runs in 2.2 innings of relief. Pierce Rankin, Eli Boike and Randy Schwartz all had 2 hits, with Rankin homering.

Bluefield 6 at Elizabethton 5 (Game 1)

This one was picked up after 9, as Elizabethton came back with 4 late runs yesterday before rain struck. The two squads remained deadlocked for four more innings before a 2 out hit by pitch and an Art Charles double in the 13th. For the earlier play by play, check out #2 JB's wrapup from yesterday.

Bluefield 4 at Elizabethton 3 (Game 2)

Elizabethton took another tough loss, which serves them right for having a weird/confusing name, as far as I'm concerned. With one out in the first Gustavo Pierre singled, Kellen Sweeney doubled, Yudelmis Hernandez singled and Art Charles, yesterday/today's hero, homered. It would be all Bluefield would need, which was helpful as it was all they got. David Rollins, a 24th round pick out of San Jacinto College North, allowed 2 hits in 5 innings, striking out 4, walking none and allowing 1 earned run. Charles tripled in addition to his homer, and Melvin Garcia also had 2 hits.

GCL Jays 8 and GCL Yankees 3

Griffin Murphy was very sharp in his Blue Jays/Bluefield debut, going 5 innings and allowing a single run. As a bonus, he allowed on 3 hits, and had a 7/1 K/BB ratio. Dickie Thon went 1/4, while Jorge Vega-Rosado had 3 singles in his 4 at bats and stole a base to boot.

DSL Jays 1 at DSL Angels 8

Another beatdown. Cesar Sanchez gave up all 8 runs, only 5 earned, in 4.2 innings. He walked four and gave up 5 hits, but the DSL Jays made 3 errors. Luis Martin had 2 hits for the Jays.

3 Stars!

Third Star! Eric Thames - 4/6, 1 R, 2 RBI

Second Star! Manny Mayorson - 3/6, HR, 3 R, 6 RBI

First Star! Griffin Murphy - 5 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 K

Thanks for this Anders. And thanks to the others who write the minor league updates. Don't often comment but read the site daily.

Loewen was in CF again last night. Can't help but wonder if that means he is being considered as a possible backup on the MLB team. Seems a bit silly that the AAA team has all that hitting (PCL considerations taken into account) while the BJs have such an anaemic lineup.

I agree Krose.   Farrell was talking about a shake up or spark just recently.  A mass call up of Loewen, Thames, and Cooper would be interesting.  Highly unlikely for various reasons, but ya a neat proposition.

McGuire said via Twitter that he took a line drive off his shin but that he was fine & was 'Good to go'.

I think we have seen enough examples to know that just because a player is mashing in Las Vegas doesn't mean they can jump to the MLB continue to contribute. Guys like Cooper and Snider have had sucess at AAA yet look lost at times in the MLB. Thames seemed to hold his own but certainly didnt light the league up when he was promoted. Although it does happen that a player can come up and contribute right away usually there is a learning curve there. Personally I don't think anyone on that team besides Lawrie would be a significant upgrade at any position at this moment. Hopefully Snider or Thames could in the future provide more than Patterson is giving in LF. But as for a CF, there is nobody even close to the MLB.

From the player development perspective, the Jays desperately need to get their AAA affiliate back to the IL.  I mean, Kyle Drabek really should be pitching a full season in AAA before he pitches at the MLB and someone like Zack Stewart really should've faced AAA hitters before he pitches at the MLB level.  The Las Vegas affiliate really scared the Jays off sending any of these guys there.  The IL also offers a better gauge of hitting acumen.

As an organization, that should be a serious priority right now and I hope they're wooing some of the IL affiliates right now.

Also, they would be a lot closer to see.

I didn't think Cooper looked lost at the plate at all and that it's an overreaction to a 41 PA statline. The guy is controlling the zone in Vegas with more walks than strikeouts and had a 5:5 ratio with the Jays. He didn't have that much success but he looked comfortable to me and I like his quiet approach. He hit .121/.244/.242 but that's with a .103 BABIP so obviously there's serious sample size issues - throw in a few singles and it would have been a .240/.360/.360 line. The most important thing I saw out of Cooper was a good approach to his at bats and the ability to work a count.

Cooper & Thames might not be miraculous offensive saviours - they obviously won't be this good in the majors - but at the very least, I'd rather watch them struggle than Patterson, Rivera, and Davis.  Maybe one of them will turn into a solid contributor. There's at least a hope of something more than "maybe they'll get back to their career norm of being almost average."

Vegas does do stuff to stats. Right now they have 3 guys with 1000+ OPS+ over 200+PA (Lawrie, Thames, Cooper). Loewen is in the 900's (as was Wise before being let go), while Snider & Woodward are in the 800's. You have to shave at least 100 points off that imo to get a real read on them, perhaps more.

For pitchers it probably is a good thing to pitch there. Why? Because it forces them to keep the ball down, to know that any mistakes could be out of the park so you got to focus at all times, much like they would in the majors.

Brett Cecil has been interesting there. 8-2 W-L record suggests he is doing well, but his 5.08 ERA (vs team ERA of 5.04) suggests not so much. He has 2.7 BB/9 vs 7.4 K/9, both decent but those BB need to come down more. The killer has been the 1.9 HR/9 (team rate of 1.1) which suggests he is having an nightmare keeping the ball down in the zone.

I recall the Dodgers has a team in a launching pad (might even have been Vegas) for years but kept developing A+ starters as they'd get kicked down there but then came up to a pitchers paradise in Dodger Stadium. Survival of the fittest.

The biggest issue is for the hitters not to get overconfident down there. Might be good to reward the players based on BB-SO ratio and how many line drives they are hitting or something. I'd say the Jays telling them 'do this or you stay here forever' is a good thing (as they did with Lawrie).
ayjackson - Thursday, June 23 2011 @ 12:35 PM EDT (#237327) #

My recollection is that Cecil has had two nightmarish starts, six good ones and two excellent ones.  That's an exceptable ratio for a #3-4 starter in the majors.

Cecil's biggest problem this year was movement on his pitches and I don't think pitching at altitude is going to give us much feedback on that.

ayjackson - Thursday, June 23 2011 @ 12:36 PM EDT (#237329) #

I didn't think Cooper looked lost at the plate at all and that it's an overreaction to a 41 PA statline.

I agree.  He looked selective and patient.  He had trouble laying off the high fastball, which is a common initial problem in your first turn at the majors.

krose - Thursday, June 23 2011 @ 12:46 PM EDT (#237331) #
Cooper & Thames might not be miraculous offensive saviours

I agree. We should assume that AAA hitters will not immediately succeed at the MLB level. Cooper, Thames and Loewen will likely need to see ML pitching, experience some failure, return to AAA and regroup for yet another try at the majors. My point is, that process should be underway rather than blocked by unproductive players who offer very little or no upside. This is not to say AA should immediately incur wholesale changes, or that the suggested changes will quickly change the team's performance. But, Cooper could nicely fit as a backup at 1st/DH. That would mean releasing EE or Rivera.

Kasi - Thursday, June 23 2011 @ 12:51 PM EDT (#237333) #
Most top prospects spend a lot more time at AA than they do at AAA. This is with teams that have their teams in the IL too. AAA teams very often are filled with career minor leaguers as well as AAAA players. Many top prospects just go straight from AA to the majors.

Yesterday Ian Kadish pitched .2 innings for Bluefield (first game) and he is listed as striking out 3 batters. Can anyone explain how that happened.
uglyone - Thursday, June 23 2011 @ 12:54 PM EDT (#237335) #
Don't have to release either of them. The only guys that have to go are the two guys we can be 100% will never have any trade value - Nix and McCoy.

CF Patterson
RF Bautista
LF Thames
3B Encarnacion
SS Escobar
2B Hill
1B Lind
DH Cooper
C Arencibia

LF/DH/1B Rivera
CF/RF Davis
3B/2B/SS McDonald
C Molina

yup. my highly unscientific ballpark of pcl/vegas hitting numbers has me adjusting them down by 100-150 points of ops.

So in a "normal" AAA environment, I'd ballpark that so far this year Lawrie is hitting like a .950-1.000ops guy, Thames is a .900-.950ops guy, Cooper an .850-.900ops guy, Loewen an .800-.850ops guy, and Snider a .750-.800ops kind of guy.

no science behind that other than it seems to work for me.

Loewen in centrefield/platoon DH is an intriguing concept. His arm and power would definitely be an upgrade but his size/speed might not play on the turf.  Bundling Patterson/Davis with one of the top four relievers ( or two of the top six) plus a pitching prospect might get an interesting return.

Yesterday Ian Kadish pitched .2 innings for Bluefield (first game) and he is listed as striking out 3 batters. Can anyone explain how that happened.

You can read it on the game recap at milb.com:
  • Brandon Henderson strikes out swinging.
  • Elizabethton Twins Brandon Henderson ejected by HP umpire Junior Valentine.
  • Max Kepler-Rozycki strikes out swinging. Wild pitch by pitcher Ian Kadish. Jhonatan Arias to 3rd. Niko Goodrum to 2nd. Max Kepler-Rozycki to 1st.
  • Nick Lockwood strikes out swinging.

Ahhh, I see it Marc.  The old dropped third strike trick.  The same way you can strike out four hitters in an inning if you are lucky enough to accomplish such a feat.

Bundling Patterson/Davis with one of the top four relievers ( or two of the top six) plus a pitching prospect might get an interesting return.

Patterson might have some fringey value, but Davis probably has negative trade value, since he's been awful and is signed to a two-year deal.

I'm not even sure the relievers have much value. Frasor, perhaps, and maybe Janssen when he's healthy again, but none of the others have been spectacular, nor are they cheap.

I don't think anyone in the organization would be happier about leaving LV than Rey Gonzalez.  I don't know much about this guy - anyone know why he can look solid in AA but gets battered unrecognizably in AAA?  Mills has shown that you can have success without dominant stuff in Vegas.
Kelekin - Thursday, June 23 2011 @ 03:44 PM EDT (#237347) #
I'm  glad to see Antolin back.  I was very high on him in the 08 draft and they were working on making him a solid reliever, but then he had that dreaded TJ (I believe).  Glad to see him back and getting challenged with Dunedin.

Alvarez is throwing 98 with great sink and a very good change-up? Mmm... even the most skeptical stuff-hound would have to be impressed with that combination.

Speaking of injuries, nearly forgotten Andrew Liebel started for the GCL Jays today.

I beat the italics! (I think) - if what you see is not in italics, it's because i switched to "plain old text" and inserted a </i> at the very front.

Indeed. And I'd much rather a prospect have 2 great pitches with control and need to learn a 3rd than three great pitches and need to "learn" control.
