The evening saw a postponement in Triple-A, an extra-inning loss in Double-A and Toronto’s A-ball affiliates split their games. Drew Hutchison continues to work his way up Toronto’s prospect lists, while Asher Wojciechowski continues to experience some struggles during his first professional season.

Las Vegas @ Fresno

Postponed.

New Hampshire 3 @ Trenton 4 (10 innings)Boxscore

You hate to say that the Fisher Cats deserved to lose this game, but after going 3-for-19 with runners in scoring position, it’s hard to reach any other conclusion. Rey Gonzalez started for the Fisher Cats and went 7 strong innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and a walk, striking out four. After eleven starts, Gonzalez’s ERA now sits at 2.56 for the year. Ron Uviedo pitched 2 scoreless innings to bring the game into extras. Frank Gailey came in for the tenth and retired the first batter he faced. The next batter reached on an error by Adeiny Hechevarria. Gailey walked a batter and then the runners executed a double steal. Gailey intentionally walked a batter to set up the force at any base, but a single to right ended the game.

Darin Mastroianni was the only New Hampshire batter to have a multi-hit game with a single and a double. He reached base four times and Mark Sobolewski was the only other hitter to reach base more than once. Anthony Gose, Mike McDade and Moises Sierra each had a single, with Sierra scoring and Gose adding an RBI. Yan Gomes had a single and an RBI, while Sobolewski had a single, RBI and a walk. Hechevarria, Ricardo Nanita and Calix Crabbe were held hitless.

Dunedin 5 @ Clearwater 11Boxscore

The score probably makes this game seem closer than it was. Dunedin had four hits, but scraped together five runs, while Clearwater had 13 hits. A.J. Jimenez, Bradley Glen, Sean Ochinko and Ivan Contreras each had a hit. Glenn had a two-run homer in the first and Ochinko added a solo shot in the ninth. Ochinko scored twice and drew a walk and Glenn worked two walks. Justin Jackson, Kenny Wilson and Kevin Ahrens each also worked a free pass, while Brad McElroy and Jon Talley were held hitless.

Dunedin actually led the game 4-0 after two innings, but everything caved in during the fifth inning. Asher Wojciechowski pitched 4 innings and didn’t allow a run, but he allowed three hits, a walk, another hit and, after retiring two batters, allowed two more hits and was pulled from the game. Scott Gracey came in and allowed two inherited runners to score, one on a Justin Jackson error. Wojciechowski allowed 9 hits and three walks, striking out two. He allowed eight runs, five earned. Scott Gracey allowed two runs over 1.1 innings on a pair of hits and two walks. Anton Loup allowed another run over 1.1 innings, before Ryan Shropshire threw 1 scoreless frame.

Burlington 0 @ Lansing 6Boxscore

Drew Hutchison started for Lansing and continued to demonstrate why he’s a popular sleeper prospect in the system. Hutchison went 6 innings and struck out nine. He didn’t walk a batter and allowed two hits. Hutchison induced four grounders and one fly out. Dayton Martze came in for the 3 inning save and earned it. He struck out three, walked one and allowed 2 hits.

The Lugnuts attack was led by two three-hit performances. Marcus Knecht went 3-for-4 with three runs and a double and Bryson Namba also added three hits and 2 RBI. Jake Marisnick and Michael Crouse each added a single and the latter also drew a walk and scored a run. K.C. Hobson and Jack Murphy added two singles and Hobson added a run and a walk. Gustavo Pierre, Marcus Brisker and Oscar Dominguez were held hitless, with Pierre striking out three times.

Three Stars:
3rd Star – Darin Mastroianni, 2-3, 0 R, 2B, 2 BB, SB, 3 TB
2nd Star – Rey Gonzalez, 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
1st Star – Drew Hutchison, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K

To be fair to Pierre, he should have had a hit last night instead of taking the 0-fer. He hit a single to center with Jack Murphy on first. Murphy was retired 7-4 which gave Pierre a fielders choice. That poor kid can't buy a break this season.

Lugnutfan, could you give a small description of D Hutchison's performance. What variety of pitches was he throwing. Is he on a pitch count? He never seems to go deep into games.
Thanks.

Hechavarria has been picking up some steam. .318/.354/.614 over his last 10 games with 3 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR, 3:4 BB:K. As well, I spoke to someone who caught the last two games at Trenton and he's been thoroughly impressed with Adeiny's defensive capabilities.

Last night was the best I have seen Hutchinson throw all season. He was featuring a mid 90s fastball with a slider and change up to compliment it. The moat impressive thing and probably the best thing with his performance was the fact that he was throwing first pitch strikes. That opened up a lot for him.

Yes he is on a pitch count like pretty much everyone in the system. His pitch count right now I believe is around 90 pitches and 2hen half the outs you re its in your outing come from strike outs, it doesn't take long for guys to get there.

Dang cell phones and inaccurate fingers, reading my post, I don't know what I was trying to say.  Actually I was talking about half of Hutchinson's outs coming the way of the strike out and when you do that, it will drive your pitch count up very high very early.  That is what happened on Saturday.

When you only get to throw 90 pitches or so an outing, it is better for the team that you pitch to contact and get early outs.  It is impressive to strike out so many, but it probably isn't the best thing for the team that you have to leave the game so early because of pitch count.

1BlueJaysWay quotes Pete Walker as saying that Alvarez has one of the most dominante fast balls in all the minor leagues. Reportedly he touched 100 today.

(albeit this might be a case where a guy might have to shave it back a bit to get the best movement - just my speculation - this is the first time he's given up more than one run in a start this year)

On the impressive side, he gave up runs in the first two innings but then settled in and put together a couple of shutout innings so that speaks to maturity i guess.

Thanks Lugnut Fan. I am very intrigued by Hutchison. When he was interviewed he spoke of intelligent pitching, ie location & variety as key instead of velocity, as well a pitching coach said that he was advanced in pitching knowledge. This was last year and his results impressed me.

Then this spring we find out his FB is up to 95mph from 91mph. He has gained weight as well from 165 lb last year. I don't know, but it makes sense to me to add a power pitching aspect but still keep his control type pitching. This IMO will take a bit of time, with hopefully incredible results. He is also just 19 years old for most of this season.
