The affiliates put up 3 6’s and a 5 runs scored in the four games, giving them four-fifths of a good Yahtzee turn. Unfortunately, they came up on the short end of three of those contests, as Dunedin won a squeeker for the only victory. Nobody, including Zach Stewart or Chad Jenkins, was particularly impressive on the mound, leaving it up to a promising low-level outfielder and a high-priced shortstop to lead the offence.

Tucson 8 @ Las Vegas 5Boxscore

The Tucson Padres edged out the Lawrie-less 51’s with an 8-5 victory. Scott Richmond started and allowed five runs, four earned, over 5.2 innings. Richmond surrendered 8 hits and two walks, striking out a pair. Rommie Lewis came in with two runners on base and stranded them both. However, he proceeded to allow three runs on four hits, including two solo shots, in his next inning. Winston Abreu pitched two scoreless frames and didn’t allow a hit, striking out two and inducing three grounders.

David Cooper had three of Las Vegas’s 8 hits, including a double, and had 2 RBI. DeWayne Wise was 2-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of runs scored. Adam Loewen was 1-for-2 with three walks and a strikeout. Ryan Shealy, Craig Stansberry and Chris Woodward were held hitless, but each drew a free pass. Brian Jeroloman and Manny Mayorson each had a single and an RBI, with Jeroloman also walking twice, and Travis Snider was 0-for-4 with a walk and also grounded into a double play.

New Hampshire 6 @ Trenton 7Boxscore

Zach Stewart started for the Fisher Cats and had a no decision. His ERA sits at 4.66 on the year after he surrendered four earned runs in 5 innings. Stewart struck out five and walked a batter, but his stuff wasn’t particularly sharp, as he gave up 11 hits. Stewart retired 6 batters on ground balls and four on fly balls. B.J. LaMura came in and threw 1.1 innings and Evan Crawford finished the last 1.2 frames. LaMura surrendered three runs, giving him the loss and a blown save (in one of the pointless uses of that rather meaningless stat). LaMura walked two and allowed three hits. Crawford also allowed three hits, but no runs.

New Hampshire scratched together 10 hits and drew three walks, but came up on the short end. Darin Mastroianni, Adeiny Hechevarria, Mike McDade and John Tolisano each had a two hit game. Mastroianni had a double and triple and drew a walk, scoring twice. Hechevarria saw Mastroianni’s triple and topped him with a home run. Hechevarria also scored twice and drove in three runs. McDade hit his seventh home run of the year, a two-run shot. Tolisano was 2-for-3 with a walk. Mark Sobolewski was 1-for-4 with a run scored and Yan Gomes had a single and a walk. Three of the hotter prospects of the year – Anthony Gose, Travis d’Arnaud and Moises Sierra – were kept off the scoresheet.

Palm Beach 5 @ Dunedin 6Boxscore

The Palm Beach Cardinals had 15 hits, but the Dunedin pitching was able to minimize the damage and escape with a one-run victory. Chad Jenkins started and picked up his fourth win of the year. His ERA rose to 3.07, as Jenkins allowed four runs over 6 innings. Jenkins walked a batter and struck out five, but he allowed 11 hits. Matt Wright came in and walked two during his inning of relief and Dumas Garcia allowed a hit, but not a run. Wes Etheridge allowed three hits and a run, which saw his ERA jump up to 1.37, but he also struck out three batters, improving his strikeout to walk ratio to 23:6.

The bottom of the lineup led the attack for Dunedin, as the last three batters in the lineup were involved in nearly every run. Kevin Ahrens, batting seventh, was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Sean Ochinko was 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo homer and is now 6-for-his-last-19 with two walks, four doubles and a home run. Ivan Contreras batted ninth and was 3-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. A.J. Jimenez added a solo shot and Kenny Wilson was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI. However, all eyes were on first base, where Adam Lind started and went 0-for-3 with an RBI. He was then replaced by Jon Talley, who was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts.

Burlington 13 @ Lansing 6Boxscore

This contest started well for the Lugnuts, as Marcus Brisker walked and he was singled to second by Kevin Nolan. Jake Marisnick singled, driving home Brisker, and then Marcus Knecht doubled, cashing both Nolan and Marisnick. Knecht came in to score on consecutive fly balls by K.C. Hobson and Carlos Perez.

Unfortunately, at that point the wheels fell off the bus. Burlington scored 9 runs over the next two innings and the Bees went on to win the game convincingly. Sean Nolin threw 2 innings, with the first going much better than the second. Nolin allowed four runs on five hits and three walks. Marcus Walden came in in relief and didn’t fare any better. Over 1.2 innings, Walden allowed six runs, five earned, on four hits and three walks. Danny Barnes allowed three runs on three hits and a walk, but at least he was able to eat a few innings, going 3 frames. Steve Turnbull and Alex Pepe combined for 2.1 scoreless innings.

On the offensive side, Marcus Brisker was 0-for-2 with three walks and K.C. Hobson was 0-for-3 with two walks. Marcus Knecht was the driving force for the offence, going 3-for-5 with the aforementioned double, a home run, 4 RBI and two runs scored. Nolan and Marisnick each had two hits and Perez and Michael Crouse each had one. Gustavo Pierre was hitless and made his 31st error.

Three Stars:
3rd Star – Ivan Contreras, 3-4, 2 R, HR, RBI, 6 TB
2nd Star – Adeiny Hechevarria, 2-5, 2 R, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, 7 TB
1st Star – Marcus Knecht, 3-5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 7 TB

Per Rotoworld, per the Toronto sun apparently:

Brett Cecil from Thursday: "He struck out six in the complete-game effort. The most encouraging part is that Cecil's velocity sat in the low 90s and got up to 94 mph. "The reports were very good," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "Up to 94 (mph), nine innings, complete game, still in the low 90s in the ninth inning. This is a much improved outing over his previous starts with Las Vegas."

I thought someone here mentioned listening to the game and said he was only throwing 89 ?

"I thought someone here mentioned listening to the game and said he was only throwing 89 ?"

That would be me, and not once did the announcer say 94, he even stated in the 9th that Cecil was at 89 which was consistent for him all game and mentioned a few times during the broadcast that Cecil hit 91, which was the top end and this only happened a few times throughout the game.

I'm wondering if the Jays had their own gun on Cecil as opposed to using the info from the stadium gun.

Ya. I didn't recall the poster (you obviously) but you sounded totally in the know from that start, that why this sounded so odd? 94 ? When has Cecil ever thrown 94? Never that I recall, but boys oh boys, I forget a lot. Maybe he's had some Bartolo Colon injected into his fanny? Alright he can touch 94 it is. Next stop, 20 win seasons.

Snider is really struggling.  Hitting .237 in his last 10 games, with 0 HR's and an OPS of .575.

On another thread, somebody mentioned that Stewart was really frustrated with still being in AA and it might be affecting his pitching.  I thought it was strange that they sent him to AA at the start of the season.  Hopefully, he can right the ship, because they're unlikely to promote him to AAA with the way he's pitching now, unless they get a few injuries.

Knecht is having an excellent first half of the season.  Nice to see another Canadian prospect doing so well.  Over his last 10 games his OPS is up to 1.123, bringing the seasonal number up to .957.  What's his defense like in LF?

not sure if my memory is any better, but hitting 94 wasn't too rare from Cecil last year I don't think. Sitting 90-92, touching 93-94.

Please assure me that Snider’s not the second coming of Sam Horn (the player, not the fan-site).   I can’t take much more of this “struggling”.   When I watched him line those drives out at Yankee Stadium after he first came up, I was convinced he was the new Carlos.  Now I’m almost ready to jump ship on him.  It hurts.  Bad.

I saw Knecht in Auburn. He moves well, gets a good read and has a fine arm for a left-fielder. He spent a fair bit of time in center-field, and my guess is that he would be an above-average defensive left-fielder.
Mike Green - Saturday, June 04 2011 @ 03:46 PM EDT (#236122) #
Snider was never quite the hitting prospect that Carlos was. That is a very high standard though.

He is now 23, and everything that he has done prior to 2011 suggested that he would be a very good player, if not a star. I wouldn't get too worried at least for another year or so.

Knechts defense is fairly solid in LF and I would say he is slightly above average.  Off the top of my head and without the aid of my stat packs, I would say he is pretty close to leading the team in outfield assists.

His offense is what really gets you excited and there is a ton of power potential there.  It is especially fun to watch him right now with him being so hot.

Two things:

Lugnut Fan I don't always thank you (heck, I never thank you) after each of your many comments about the guys you've seen play at Lansing. However, I really, really appreciate reading your views. Many thanks. (Don't let it go to your head - I'm not sending a cheque - er - "check" you being an 'merican an' all).

On Snider - Snider will be an occasional All Star - at least. He is still young and has great tools. It will click, he will excel. Have I ever lied to you before?

Er - a third thing:

Arencibia, Lawrie, Thames, Gose and Hechaverria (and at least seven or ten others) when combined with Bautista, Escobar and Lind are going to give us an EXCEPTIONAL offensive and defensive team going forward (mid-2012 at the latest).

IF - Stewart, Cecil, Drabek and Morrow (to a lesser extent) were not ALL regressing - WOW would we be really looking good now. Will Alvarez and McGuire be ready to challenge sometime next year? Clearly by 2013 we've a whole herd of tallented pitching beasties ready to contribute.

Should AA go get at least one more, controllable, young, seriously good starter even if it takes a good chunk of the minor league catching depth, some of the minor league outfield depth and maybe even one/two of the minor league young starting pitching depth?

Methinks he should - inquiring minds want to know.

The MWL all stars were announced today and the Lugnuts will have four players in the game.  The outfield trio of Knecht, Marisnick and Crouse were all named to the team and will all start for the Eastern Division.  Steve Turnbull was also named to the team and will come out of the bullpen.  The game is on June 21 first on the banks of the Mississippi River this year in Davenport Iowa.

Woulda been cool to see Hutch make it...

Still, kinda cool to place your entire OF

Mylegacy, I believe you just described AA's plan for ongoing contention. I too am excited about the large number of good prospects. Marishnick will be the complete package IMO, but I want to see him in AA before I get too carried away.

Lawrie, Thames, Gose and Hechaverria (and at least seven or ten others) when combined with Bautista, Escobar and Lind are going to give us an EXCEPTIONAL offensive and defensive team going forward (mid-2012 at the latest).

The odds that any team has 11-14 position player prospects in their minors who will turn into above-average major leaguers is, to put it mildly, exceedingly low.

while that's true, it's hard not to be excited by the fact that all of these guys arguably have starting potential, with some having impact potential:

CF Gose (20) - Marisnick (20)
RF Sierra (22) - Crouse (20)
LF Snider (23) - Knecht (21)
3B Lawrie (21)
SS Hechevarria (22) - Thon (19)
2B
1B Cooper (24) - McDade (22)
C Arencibia (25) - D'Arnaud (22) - Jimenez (21) - Perez (20)
DH Thames (24)

If even a third of them turn out, we're looking pretty dang good.

SS Hechevarria (22) - Thon (19)

I don't quite understand the expectations many of us have with Thon. Ranked #199 in a weak draft class by BA.  Acrimonious negotiotions. Pro debut postponed due to a private and confidential illness.  Even the Jays admit the kid is raw.   To think this kid has more potential for success than others in the system, e. g. Justin Jackson, is overly wishful thinking IMO. Until he actually shows something, I have absolutely no excitement for him or his chances.

China fan - Sunday, June 05 2011 @ 02:24 PM EDT (#236145) #
How is it that the Jays have done so poorly at developing 2B prospects?  It's especially bad luck with the major-league incumbent doing so badly.  I'm not very keen on switching Escobar or Hechevarria to 2B, but it might have to be considered at some point.  The other option, theoretically, might be Justin Jackson, who has played 13 games at 2B this year -- but that scenario must still be considered a longshot at this point.
