Today's thread is a Giant Data Table.

These are career full-count splits for current AL pitchers, plus Roy Halladay and Shaun Marcum because I'm arbitrary like that. They're ranked by OBP.

Caveats:
1. The samples are small.
2. Different pitchers might tend to run deep counts against different kinds of hitters.
3. Some of the pitchers have been in very different environments - Peavy pitched several years in San Diego, Francis pitched several years in Denver.
4. These are career stats, which are not really a good measure of how good players are at this very moment.

With that out of the way... Some of the numbers are unsurprising - Carmona and Masterson would rather walk you than give in to you, and why not? And it's not a shock, to me at least, to see Buehrle and Sabathia and Weaver near the top of the leaderboard. Because most of the samples are so small, you can't read too much into this about any individual player, but I found the stats revealed a decent amount about what you can expect in a full count, and how (in case this wasn't intuitively obvious already) this situation clearly favors the hitters.

Tonight's contest should be good. I've had the pitching matchup circled on my calendar for weeks. We're in for a serious clash of styles, as Kyle Drabek continues his baptism by fire against Cleveland's soft-tossing righthander Josh Tomlin, who doesn't have anywhere near the raw stuff Drabek possesses but nevertheless arrived as a big league pitcher right out of the box, no assembly required. Drabek's 42 walks lead baseball; Tomlin's 10 are the fewest among qualifiers for the ERA title. After the game, as MatO and Dave pointed out in the other thread, the Baseball Project is playing the Horseshoe tonight. They write topical tunes which should hook any baseball fan who's not completely averse to their jangly retro-indie vibe. Highly recommended!

Very interesting.  A pitcher like Roy Halladay with exceptional control does not have anything like the best W% at 3-2, but keeps the ball in the yard and strikes out his share.  It looks like Zach Britton could learn a thing or two from Doc (no shame in that)- don't give in.

I almost wonder whether three-ball counts are more strongly correlated than walks to bad pitching outcomes.

Well, that settles it, then.

I predict a roster move before this day is done. It is extremely, extremely unusual these days for a manager to get the hook out for his starter in the first inning. John Farrell is losing all patience with Kyle Drabek's inability to throw strikes, and it's hard to blame him for that. Plus, now the bullpen is completely screwed up. Brad Mills or Brett Cecil?

Brett Lawrie not in the LV line-up tonight, resting the hand I assume.

Travis Snider is leading off (the Longoria plan?).

It wouldn't surprise me if both Mills and Cecil are called up. Ch-ch-changes.

I'm pretty excited to see Justin Jackson starting to put it together.
I remember the reports a couple years back being that he had a shot to be an outstanding defensive shortstop...

With his 2011 performance to date it poses two questions:

1) Should he be left alone at short?
2) How long do you keep him at Dunedin? Would it be a reasonable argument to suggest a young hitter might be better off going PCL to Eastern League? Is the pitching better in the Eastern League than PCL?

The Jays have too many shortstops, Hechavarria in AA; Goins and Jackson in high A. Jackson has the ability to play elsewhere, unlike the other two (yet), so I believe the Jays will leave him at the utility position unless a opening becomes available.

I think the Jays will likely leave Jackson in Dunedin for a lot of 2011. Jackson has struggled through most of the last three years so a full year of success would be best for his confidence. If he starts well in AA next season they could move him up to AAA then.

I notice Anthony Rizzo, who was hit in retaliation and also pulled from Tuesday's game isn't playing in Wednesday's  either.

Can't speak to what the answer might be, but I think this is like asking whether the pitching's better at Petco than Coors.

June 2 is a notable day in Yankee history.  It is the birthday of both Horace Clarke and Gene Michael.  The summer of 1969 had much to recommend itself...

I don't think it is as straight forward as that Alex. If you compare these pitches for Petco and Coors it isn't clear that Petco has an advantage.
