One affiliate won by a converted touchdown, one lost by a field goal, another had two field goals to overcome a safety and the other put up a converted TD and field goal to best a rouge (a single point in the CFL for those who don't know!).  Total it all up and it's a golden 3-1 night for the good guys.

Las Vegas 7 Albuquerque 0

Las Vegas, NV - The 51s took the lead for good with a run in the second but made sure this one would not get away as they scored four runs in the fourth and two more in the eighth to beat the Dodgers affiliate.

Batting - Adam Loewen had the big swing as he connected for a solo homer, his 6th of the year, to give the 51s the only run they would need.  Fellow Canuck Brett Lawrie doubled, singled and knocked home two runs and recently demoted Mike McCoy singled and walked twice out of the leadoff spot.  Brian Jeroloman singled, was plunked and walked (BJBBM=11!) and Manny Mayorson had two singles. Jonathan Diaz singled and plated a run and Jason Lane added a double.  Ryan Budde had a sacrifice fly and Travis Snider reached base once with a walk.

Running - Snider and Mayorson each stole their third bag of the season.

Pitching - Lefty Luis Perez lasted eight innings and kept his game WHIP below one by yielding just six hits and a walk.  He struck out six and 11 of his 12 outs in play stayed earth bound to improve to 2-1 on the season.  Fellow lefty Wil Ledezma pitched a clean ninth.

Defence - Mayorson was involved in two double plays at second base by turning a 6-4-3 DP and starting a 4-3 effort.

Portland 3 New Hampshire 0

Manchester, NH - The Red Sox affiliate scored the only run they would need in the fourth but added runs in the sixth and ninth just to be sure they put this one in the win column, unlike their parent club Tuesday night (hee hee!).

Batting - No extra base hits here.  Anthony Gose had two singles and Adeiny Hechavarria reached twice with a base knock and a walk.  Moises Sierra, Travis d'Arnaud and John Tolisano also had a hit apiece.  Darin Mastroianni, Mike McDade, Ricardo Nanita and Craig Stansberry hopefully received some nice parting gifts backstage.  The best chance for the Fisher Cats to score came in the first when Gose reached on a catcher's interference and Hechavarria singled him to third.  Hechavarria then stole second to set up a second and third, nobody out situation.  Gose was thrown out on a fielder's choice and two other ground outs ended the threat.

Running - Hechavarria was 1-for-2 in the stolen base department.  Gose was thrown out at second and Sierra was nailed at third.

Pitching - B.J. LaMura did his best to keep the Fisher Cats in the ball game.  He set down the first nine hitters in order and lasted eight innings in which he was nicked for two runs on seven hits and one walk.  He struck out four and eight of his 15 outs in play were on the ground.  Matt Daly could not hold down the fort in the ninth as he gave up a solo home run to catcher Ryan Lavarnway among his two hits and he also walked a pair of batters.  Former Twin Bobby Korecky put out the fire by striking out the two batters he faced and leaving the bases loaded.

Defence - Sierra threw out the same runner twice at second base and at third base from right field.  Some people never learn!

Dunedin 6 Fort Myers 2

Fort Myers, FL - The Twins affiliate scored the game's first run in the second inning but the D-Jays spun the wheel for two runs in the third and another in the fifth.  Fort Myers got one back in the seventh but Dunedin made sure there would be no Miracle comeback (see what I did there?) with two runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth.

Batting - Kenny Wilson set the tone atop the batting order with a double, two singles and a walk while accounting for 50% of Dunedin's run total.  Cleanup hitter Brad Glenn homered, singled and walked while driving in two runs.  Kevin Ahrens also went deep for a two-run shot and drew a walk while A.J. Jimenez and Sean Ochinko had two hits apiece.  Ryan Goins singled and drove in a pair and Jon Talley collected a base knock.  Brian Van Kirk and Justin Jackson were each 0-for-4 and Brad McElroy was 0-for-1.

Running - Wilson had two stolen bases and is up to nine on the season.  Chris Hopkins pinch-ran for Ochinko and scored a run.

Pitching - Ryan Tepera qualified for the victory by lasting the minimum five innings by giving up one run on seven hits and a walk.  He struck out just one batter but more than offset that with an 11-2 groundout/flyout total to run his record to 3-0.  Lefty Aaron Loup gave up a run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.  Chris Malone allowed one of two inherited runners to score but he issued just one walk and struck out a batter in 1 2/3 scoreless frames.  Wes Etheridge also had a 1-1 K/BB performance in a scoreless ninth.

Defence - Goins dropped one at short but he helped turn 4-6-3 and 3-6-3 double plays.  McElroy replaced Van Kirk in left field late in the game.

Lansing 10 Great Lakes 1

Midland, MI
- The Lugnuts came off the bus and scored twice in the first inning before the Dodgers affiliate cut the lead in half in the second.  Lansing put up six runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to hammer home the victory.

Batting - Lance Durham hit a two-run home run and drew three walks to pace the attack.  K.C. Hobson had three singles and two runs batted in while Jake Marisnick doubled, singled and also knocked home a pair of runs.  Carlos Perez doubled and walked while Michael Crouse and Bryson Namba each singled and walked.  Gustavo Pierre singled and knocked home a run.  Marcus Knecht walked, was hit by a pitch and scored a run while Oliver Dominguez was also plunked but managed to cross home plate once as well.  Dominguez had three of the Lugnuts nine strikeouts but that was offset with seven walks.  Also, Durham and Marisnick drove in four of the runs with two outs.

Running - The running game took the night off here in terms of stolen bases.

Pitching - Casey Lawrence evened his record to 3-3 with six solid innings in which he surrendered just one run on four hits and a walk while whiffing five.  Seven of his nine outs in play did not defy the laws of gravity.  Dayton Marze matched Lawrence's five Ks in half the time as he pitched three shutout frames while scattering two hits and a walk to notch his first save of the season.

Defence - A clean ball game for the Lugnuts defensively with a zero in the error column.  Jonathan Jones came on to play second base in the ninth inning for Dominguez.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3.  Kenny Wilson, Dunedin

2.  Lance Durham, Lansing

1.  Luis Perez, Las Vegas

The F-Cats and D-Jays have morning games today. Both lead by a couple of runs halfway home, with Joel Carreno and Deck McGuire pitching well and Mike McDade and Sean Ochinko supplying the power.

Looks like I was a tad premature in wondering why the Jays don't convert Luis Perez to the bullpen.....

I watched a bit of the Lugnut game last night.  A couple of observations.  The team is good and has a swagger.  You'd have to say that everyone with the exception of maybe Bryson Namba (who looks bad) you could envision playing in the majors.

Gus Pierre is incredibly athletic.  He ran down a ball in foul territory and really made it look pretty.  It was really something to watch, there were three players converging on it, Knecht, Namba, and Pierre and Pierre looked like a thoroughbread gliding to the ball.   To echo what the announcers and others have said, he looks mechanical on the routine plays like he's trying to focus on his footwork and such right now.  It leads to errors.  I think he'll sort it out, he needs repition.  It'll come.

Lance Durham hit a no-doubter.  He looks a lot bigger than last year in Auburn and there's some serious leverage to his swing.  He doesn't get cheated up there and goes up swinging hard.  He has a Prince Fielder-lite feel to him but that's being generous and he's years away from realizing anything sort of that.

Michael Crouse is quite the unit.  He looks like a bright ball player.  Dived in right field to make a play, missed the ball, but it was the right situation with no one on and two outs.

Casey Lawrence can sure pitch.  Doesn't possess the velocity of a Jansen but he was working fast and throwing strikes.  He might dominate at the lower levels but at the upper levels he might struggle because his stuff isn't over powering.  Count me as a fan though.  Gotta love a guy who works fast and throws strikes.

Carlos Perez looks a lot bigger than people give him credit for.  I mean, every Loon player that came up were smaller or the same height as Perez.  He seems to have added some weight/muscle.  As catcher, he sets up and catches the ball similar to Russel Martin.

Congratulations to Trystan Magnuson for making the show as the A's have promoted him to the show - it's interesting to look back on the Jays 2007 draft - while most of the early high school picks have floundered, the college picks have thrived - Arencibia/Cecil/Mills/Zep and now Magnuson have made the show while Emaus has had a cup of coffee and will likely get another chance and Farina/Mastroianni are on a trajectory for some sort of big league career - that's an excellent haul - I wonder if JP's team had just stuck to their college leanings if it might have been even better. Of course, Mcdade is a decent prospect  and if Ahrens/Jackson/Tolisano ever put it together - that would be one of the great drafts - I would love an interview with dick Scott/JP regarding the decision to mix some high school picks with their traditional college centric approach in this draft.

Arhens/Jackson/Tolisano can all hope for a bench role on a major league club one day, but even then, they have some work ahead of them.

Lance Durham is already 23 and will have to move quickly to become a prospect.

85bluejay, Nicely thought out about the 2007 draft. The great success in the college picks and the lesser success in the HS picks.
You say "just go college" in 2007....Who knows, maybe the Karma was there...We lose McDade but we would get 4 more successful prospects the 4th being for Eiland.
JP's 2008 & 2009 drafts had karma that was not as one sided, as we have a mix of success. I really want to see some HS success from the 2007,8,9 drafts.

Is this really their logo???

mamboon - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#234626) #
Mick, yep it is their logo.  I am the proud owner on a 51s hat with that logo on it.  Also, take a look at the 51s batting helmut.  It has a 3D version of the logo molded into it.

Interesting... or is it telling…  of the five 40 man rosterites on the Fisher Cats - (Farina, Carreno, Hechavarria, Mastroianni, Sierra) two seem to be really struggling.  Mastroianni (216/274/304) went  0 for 4 today and is batting .105 in New Hampshire.  Hechavarria (228/315/329) went  0 for 3 today with a R and a BB.  Sierra at 294/333/400 joins Man Mountain McDade (320/362/484) as the two batting bright spots on the team.  Big Mike went 1 for 3, HR, 2 RBIs today.  Farina and Carreno are holding their own on the mound. Question:  is it time to adjust the 40 man roster?  Or do A-Hech and Mastro need some more time to improve their numbers?

And another development  -  Scott Podsednik was listed  today as released.  Anybody know the story on that?

92-93 - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 05:00 PM EDT (#234630) #
Pods released? I had noticed he was on a nice hitting streak in Vegas and had begun to heat up. Maybe they decided they weren't wasting 1m on him.
Gerry - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 05:07 PM EDT (#234633) #
They probably had a deal to release him if he didn't make the major league roster or if another team wanted him.
China fan - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 05:18 PM EDT (#234634) #

I thought Podsednik had a guaranteed $500,000 under his contract with the Jays, even if he didn't make the major-league squad.  I'm surprised that the Jays would write off that investment so quickly -- especially since Podsednik was injured for several weeks -- unless another club has agreed to take over the full $500,000 commitment.  But in the latter case, wouldn't it be listed as a trade, not a release?

scottt - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 05:44 PM EDT (#234638) #
I doubt he's owed any money if he asked to be released and the Jays complied.
TamRa - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 07:18 PM EDT (#234641) #
Coulda been a split contract too...

Looking at an alternate universe 2007 draft in which the jays stayed all college in the early rounds..

The only college players taken between Ahrens and JPA was Joe Savery

I guess the best choice between JPA and Cecil would be Andrew Brackman?

Probably have to go with Tommy Hunter or Nick Hagadone instead of Jackson

Tolisano and Eiland were so close together i'll just look for replacements taken after Eiland (there's only one college candidate between them) ...and i don't see a name I recognize as an obviously well regarded prospect before i come to Farina.

so whether those 4 work out or not, it doesn't look at present like we have a lot of "shoulda/coulda" regrets.

Mike Green - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 09:49 PM EDT (#234645) #
I had a chance to get a better read on Carlos Perez' defence tonight. He has some work to do. He doesn't get in front of the pitch down as well as you would like, and his arm strength is somewhat below average for a catcher. He gets out of the crouch quickly on foul pops, and (I would guess) on the ball in front of the plate.

He is a fine looking hitter with a really good idea of what to do, but it remains to be seen whether he will develop more pop. He is alert on the basepaths and runs well enough, but isn't going to be a big-time basestealing threat. He might be a great #2 hitter some day.
92-93 - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 10:28 PM EDT (#234646) #
Arencibia's John Buckish start to his career and AJ Jimenez's success in Dunedin could make the organization reconsider the value of letting Perez develop as a C.
dan gordon - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 11:07 PM EDT (#234651) #

According to the Jays' website, they had a "handshake agreement" with Podsednik that if he wasn't going to be the first guy called up when they had a need in the outfield they would let him go if he wanted.  I'm disappointed they prefer Patterson to Podsednik.  Patterson is not nearly as good a hitter, and from what I've seen, including tonight, Patterson is one of the worst baserunners I've seen in a very long time.  I'd have called Podsednik up right now.  Sure, Podsednik isn't a real centre fielder anymore, but I'd be willing to live with him there for a few days if Davis had to miss a bit of time again.  You'd be vulnerable if Davis suffered a long term injury, but you could use Wise if you absolutely had to, or make a deal to get somebody.  Disappointing, again.

Nice game tonight by Davis.  Hopefully, he can turn his season around.  Lind and Bautista are carrying far too much of the load, offensively

Apparently Carreno had quite the game today for New Hampshire.  One hitter for 7 innings, finished off by Crawford and Farina with no more hits allowed.

Hodgie - Wednesday, May 11 2011 @ 11:49 PM EDT (#234654) #
Sure, Podsednik isn't a real centre fielder anymore

That is putting it kindly, Podsednik was never a real centre fielder and hasn't even been adequate in left field since 2007 if UZR is to be believed. Podsednik has been a better hitter over their careers, but would it surprise you that they put up almost identical wOBAs (.323 to .325) and wRC+ (.98 and 1.00) last season?

As frustrating as he is to watch, I would highly doubt that Patterson brings that much less to the plate now than Podsednik and given that only one of those two can play CF the latter's release seems reasonable to me given the choice between the two. Besides, if you were to tell me that either of them would see significant playing time this season I would have said the Jays were in trouble, regardless of which one played.

ayjackson - Thursday, May 12 2011 @ 12:19 AM EDT (#234658) #
Apparently they told him he was behind Thames and Wise on the depth chart, so he asked for his release.
TamRa - Thursday, May 12 2011 @ 03:58 AM EDT (#234659) #
Patterson is not nearly as good a hitter

*Patterson is 3 years younger. *Patterson is a better defender by a good bit (though that's faint praise and neither are good)
*Patterson's OPS since '03 is 79, Podsendick's since '03 is 84
*Patterson in 2010 was 95, Pods in 2010 was 99

If you leave out the tiny sample in 2009 when Patterson played all of 16 games in the majors, they are of virtually of equal value (or lack thereof) offensively. the difference in the two - even if it favored Pods - certainly doesn't cover the lack of diffence and extra age (to say nothing of the fact that PF can be chronic)

Mike Green - Thursday, May 12 2011 @ 08:51 AM EDT (#234663) #
Brett Cecil had a pretty good outing last night- 7 innings, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts, 12 ground ball outs, 0 fly ball outs, 0 homers.  I wonder if the velocity was there.
92-93 - Thursday, May 12 2011 @ 09:39 AM EDT (#234666) #

Judging from the play-by-play & the 51s twitter account it looks like Cecil was a little hurt by his defense early, but he was able to grab some DPs to be able to go 7 innings. If there isn't an improvement in Drabek's command in his next start it's probably time for a switch-a-roo.

Mike, I watched some of the game on Milb.tv last night, there are no gun readings on the screen  but I did hear the announcer mention that Cecil was hitting 87mph on the gun, so I'm guessing any improvements come from Cecil getting the ball down, he did seem to have a good feel for his changeup last night as well.

China fan - Thursday, May 12 2011 @ 10:43 AM EDT (#234671) #

I assume that Podsednik's release is, to a large extent, related to his foot injury:  the fact that he seemed to conceal it when the Jays signed him, the fact that the injury increasingly seems to be chronic and recurring, the fact that it potentially affects his running game (the main reason for acquiring him), and the fact that it prevented him from competing for an OF or bench job in spring training -- which was the only time when he really had a shot at the job.

The most encouraging news about Podsednik's release is the fact that the Jays are now publicly confirming that Thames had jumped ahead of Podsednik on the depth chart.  It's a further hint that Thames is progressing faster than we initially expected, and a hint that Thames could be promoted within the next few weeks.
