I was at the Lansing game tonight as was Lugnut Fan.

Misaul Diaz did not look good as he struggled with his fastball command.  Because he was pitching behind most of the night he had to rely mainly on his fastball and some of them were over the middle of the plate.

Jake Marisnick had some excellent at-bats and obviously had some success.  None of his three hits were boomers but he hit two balls hard between short and third and he had a bouncer get by the third baseman for a double.

Carlos Perez was more of a free swinger than Marisnick and twice he got a nice pitch to hit and doubled to the right centre field wall and also to left field.

Bryson Namba took a belt high outside fastball just over the wall in right field in his first at-bat.  Later he doubled on a ground ball just inside the third base bag.

I am in town for two more games, full scouting report with pictures will come later in the week.

Very interested to hear more about the Lansing players. Marisnick has been scorching and everyone seems to think he has monster tools - do you think he could play CF in the majors? And does he get promoted to Dunedin this season?
Gerry - Sunday, May 01 2011 @ 11:31 PM EDT (#234026) #

It was only one game but he made one very nice play in the gap so yes as of today.  But it depends on whether he maintains his size or gets bigger over the next several years before he reaches the majors.

If he keeps up his .300 hitting then he could see Dunedin in the second half but the Jays will not be in a rush, Marisnick just turned 20 a month ago.

But the baseball guys will tell you there are a lot of players who have a hot month, you need to do it for longer than that before that level of performance is accepted as real.

Looking forward to hearing your reports Gerry..

Lansing seems like an exciting hotbed of prospects, I don't know if I can ever remember so many high ceiling young players at Lansing since I have started paying attention to the Jays minor league system... Many of the prospects also seem to be off to good starts, which also sweetens the pot...

The lineup has decent young prospects almost top to bottom, I was hoping to get out this summer if Aaron Sanchez ever gets to make a start..

Lawrie is now on an 11 game error free streak, with the streak starting shortly after Mordecai's arrival in Vegas.
The Dunedin position players are almost devoid of prospects, they'll be scrambling to produce runs all year.
Misual Diaz' numbers this year are just horrible. 5 GS, 19 IP, 23 H, 24 R, 14 BB, 12 K. He's even given up 3 HR this year after not giving up any in his 58 IP last year. What's happening?

It will be interesting to see how the Jays solve the problem of having 6 good outfielders in Las Vegas.  Currently they are giving Loewen some playing time at 1B and cycling another OF through the DH spot, but that still left Mastroianni on the bench yesterday, which is not the best place for a developing prospect.  Nor is it good to put an outfielder at DH when he is supposed to be learning OF skills.   I wonder if it might be better to put Wise or Podsednik at New Hampshire, where they wouldn't be blocking a top prospect  (unless they really don't see Mastroianni or Loewen as true prospects).

When Nix or Hill are back from injury, if the starting pitchers are going deeper into games, it's theoretically possible that the Jays might go back to a 7-man bullpen and demote McCoy.  That could open a spot for Podsednik or Wise on the roster.  But given all the injury problems at 3B and 2B this year, the Jays might prefer to keep McCoy rather than having 5 outfielders.   And when BOTH of Hill and Nix are back from injury, I don't see how the Jays will manage to make room for 5 outfielders.  Patterson may not be the best outfielder in the world, but he looks pretty good as a 4th outfielder.  Podsednik and Wise would seem to be little more than injury insurance at this point.

S Podsednik & D Wise would have to be put on the 40 man roster. I suppose C Patterson can come off. R Ray & J Roenicke are both on the 7 day DL, they will run out of options soon and have a lot of pitchers ahead of them.

I suppose we will have to wait 2 months or so for minor league promotions. Like Gerry said 1 month is probably not enough time for an evaluation.

The player from the Jays for the Jayson Nix trade has yet to be announced; so there is room for one batter to go to the Indians. By the way, Jason Lane was seldom played in Vegas, is there any news of him ? It seems the attention was on Mastro and the outfield prospects, and Rajai Davis and the rehabilitating outfielders.

I see the Vegas outfield as Thames-Mastroianni-Loewen. Snider shouldn't be there for long, and Podsednik will either be called up shortly or he can be the 4th outfielder in Vegas. Like Lane and Wise (no idea which one of these you're counting as "good"), Podsednik is free to ask for his release if he's not happy with his role at AAA. These are not the kind of players you compromise your prospects for.

When Nix or Hill are back from injury, if the starting pitchers are going deeper into games, it's theoretically possible that the Jays might go back to a 7-man bullpen and demote McCoy.

Regardless of anything else, maintaining an 8-man pen is just ridiculous. It leaves the healthy Jays roster with a bench of Molina, McDonald, and an outfielder, presumably Patterson. That's got to be among the absolute worst in the majors, and there's no way an 8th reliever is contributing more than Nix or a healthy Podsednik would.

Fun fact: Snider is the second-youngest player in Vegas, 2 years older than Lawrie.

I believe Nix was a cash purchase, no PTBNL

It's down to 5. Mastro has been assigned to New Hampshire. He played there tonight and went 0 for 5. Loewen seems to be getting the night off in Vegas so far.

I was at the Lansing game again tonight.  I was there for the end with about 100 other folks in the cool weather.

In the top of the tenth Oliver Dominguez made a bad error on a big popup and Scott Gracey had to come in to a first and third, no-one out jam.  But he escaped the jam with some great pitching.

In the bootom of the tenth, with Jon Jones on second, Jake Marisnick drove a line drive just over the third baseman who just got the top of his glove on the ball.  That slowed the ball enough for Jones to score the winning run.

Oh and Drew Hutchison looked pretty good.

More to come later in the week.
