A couple of pitching gems steal the show, and New Hampshire lets loose.

Las Vegas - Scheduled day off (whew!)

New Britain 5 at New Hampshire 11

It was 9-0 Cats before New Britain got it's act together, and by that point it was far too late for them to do anything other than flail futilely. Reidier Gonzalez started and was very strong, going 7 innings and allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and no walks while whiffing 8. He's now allowed 5 earned runs in 24 innings, with a 14/2 K/BB ratio. The offense didn't have any problems of its own either, as every batter hit safely, most doing more than just that. Adeiny hit for 3/4 of the cycle (minus the homer), walked and stole a base, scoring 3 runs, Moises Sierra went 2-3 with a walk and a jack with two on and two out, one of the Cats four home runs, with Ricardo Nanita (2/3, HR, 2BB), Yan Gomes (1/5, HR) and Callix Crabbe (1/4, HR) providing the others. Mike McDade doubled, and speedster centre fielders Gose and Davis both had hits and walks, with Davis doubling but getting caught stealing. Matt Daly and Alan Farina gave up 2 and 1 runs, respectively, in an inning apiece of relief work.

Dunedin 3 at Brevard County 0

A second fine pitching performance on the farm, this time from hot prospect Asher Wojciechowski, who puts Rei to shame with his now 0.87 ERA (though his 13/6 K/BB is less impressive.) Woj, as he shall now be known for spelling related reasons, allowed nary a run (as you might imagine) in his 5 innings, striking out 4 and walking 2. He had 3 groundball outs and 5 in the air. Frank Gailey, Matt Wright and Wes Etheridge were almost perfect in relief, with Gailey walking 2 in his 2 innings and the others striking out a man apiece in their one inning each, all hitless. The offensive side of the ledger wasn't quite as impressive, as the D-Jays mustered but 6 hits. Still, they bunched 4 of them together in the first, as Brad McElroy, Ivan Contreras and Sean Ochinko all singled to start the game, loading the bases for Brad Glenn and Jon Talley to strike out, allowing A.J. Jiminez to deal the fatal blow, a 2-run single. They got the insurance run in the 9th, as Jon Talley made up for his earlier intransigence with a home run for the team's only extra base hit. Contreras had the only other hit, and Jiminez the sole BB.

Great Lakes 6 at Lansing 4

So close. Lansing scored in the first, second and fourth to go up 3-0. Then things started to go downhill. Drew Hutchison allowed only 3 hits through his first 5 innings, never getting into any danger. In the 6th, he allowed the first three batters to reach on two singles and a HBP. K.C. Hobson made a fielding error, and a single, groundout and a sac fly and the Lugnuts trailed. Jake Marisnick tied things up again in the bottom half, but Great Lakes tagged the bullpen for runs in the 7th and 8th and it was all she wrote. Jonathan Jones (SB), Marisnick (2 SB) and Markus Brisker (BB) all had two hits for the 'Nuts, with Jones and Brisker both doubling. Hobson walked twice, and Garis Pena and Carlos Perez walked and singled. Hutchison went 6, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits, striking out 3 and walking none.

3 Stars!

Hon. Men! Ricardo Nanita - 2/3, HR, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI

Hon. Men! Moises Sierra - 2/3, HR, BB, R, 4 RBI

3rd Star! Reidier Gonzalez - 7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

2nd Star! Asher Wojciechowski - 5 IP, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

1st Star! Adeiny Hecchavarria - 3/4, 2B, 3B, BB, SB, 3 R, RBI

Moises Sierra has had himself a great first month of the season. His injury last year put a damper on him, but he's turned it on ever since. Where does everyone see him in the future? He plays rightfield with what some say is the strongest arm in minor league baseball. However, there's some guy named Bautista blocking him...

Another outfielder having a good start to the season but who has not received much recognition to date is Marisnick. After last night's game his slash line is now .328/.419/.531 to go along with 6 walks in 74 plate appearances. He is also second in the Midwest in steals with 8, being caught just twice. If he can cut down on the strikeouts (23%) and with Gose in AA it would be nice to see him finish the season in Dunedin if he can sustain this type of production.

Maybe LugnutFan can give us an update on his defense in CF as the bat is clearly playing well at this time. It must be fun watching that outfield right now as Crouse and Knecht are off to very good starts as well.

Sierra was my #1 prospect at the time of his injury.  He is now 22 in double A, and has hit 3 HRs in a month at home.  For a RH hitter in New Hampshire, this may be an indication of developing power.  It's worth watching.  Sierra is by all accounts a better defensive outfielder than Snider, so if he develops with the bat, he could conceivably share the LF/DH role with Snider in 2013.  Or Bautista might move into the DH role in a few years.  Or Sierra could be injury insurance or trade bait.

Depth is good.

If we nickname Wojceichowski, Wojo, could we nickname Deck McGuire, Barney Miller?

Marisnick's defense is pretty good.  Last year, he had few struggles in CF in his time in Lansing, but so far so good this year.  The outfield has been a joy to watch this year and when Crouse, Marisnik and Knecht are in the lineup, it may be the best outfield in the league.  Knecht is currently on the DL however and Johnathon Jones has taken his spot, but Jones has started out like a house on fire as well.

The problem is that the team has committed 35 errors so far this season in 20 games, so the infield play is very sloppy, especially from the SS position.  Pierre has 15 errors so far already.  He may set a franchise record in that category if he spends the full season in Lansing.

Thank you Lugnut Fan. I seemed to recall that his defense was rated as a positive but didn't want to assume that was the case this season. I know he struggled in his first exposure to the Midwest in the second half of last season but considering his start, age, position and considerable talents I am surprised that he is not talked about more. Considering the hardly inspiring composition of the Dunedin outfield, I can't help but wonder if a promotion or two may be in order come mid-season IF the current levels of production are maintained.

Offensively I think Marisnik was more than fine last season.  His numbers may not have been that impressive, but he started out very well.  He struggled at the end of the season when fatigue set in and he got into a slump that looked like really got to him.  He could see the frustration on his face and in his body language after every out he made at the end of last season.

My take is that Marisnik and Crouse will spend some time in the Dunedin outfield this season.  I'm not sure it will be mid-season, but it maybe.  If Lansing qualifies for a playoff spot after the first half, I think that they will be there for the second half.  If Lansing does not earn a playoff birth after the first half, I think they will stay here but I think they will get at least a month in Dunedin this season just based on how the Jays ran things last year.  It seems like they were moving guys up a level for the last month or so just to give them some exposure of what to expect for the next season.

very encouraging to see Sierra bouncing back like this.

he's a guy who could be one of our very best prospects. He's only 22, the same age as all those other top prospects at AA (D'Arnaud, Hech, McDade), and he's been much better than all of them so far.

I also would like to add Crouse to my list of Weirdly Invisible Prospects, right in behind Jimenez. Crouse seems to be a legit prospect, but nobody knows who he is.

Crouse has been a sleeper for me the past two seasons and the big issues have been overall consistency and contact. If you can keep the K rate down around 20% or lower, he could be interesting with a combo of speed , defense, and power.

I agree with what everyone has said about Crouse and will add that in my estimation, he is probably the most athletic kid in Lansing that I have seen to date this year.  You could make a case to bat him anywhere in the line up and he plays a solid defense.  Again, he is young and the season is young, so we will see what happens, but based on seeing him at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, I like him a lot.

Lansing's offense has been solid so far.  Hobson has been disappointing, but he has at least been walking a bunch.  The rotation lacks excitement for the 2nd straight year (outside of Hutchison), but I expect that to change by the end of the year.  I'm quite happy watching Knecht, Perez, Marisnick and Crouse.  Hopefully all 3 OFs make it to Dunedin because as it's been said above, there's hardly any competition above them.

Dunedin's rotation - it's nice seeing Jenkins' 3.40 GB:FB ratio.  It means his sinker has clearly been working.  He just needs the defense to catch up with him.  He's never going to be an exciting prospect, obviously - but there are at least signs of life there.  Wojo's ERA continues to be unsustainably lower than his WHIP, and his K/9 rate is a bit of a concern at this point.  It's nice being excited to watch the rotation every day though - when is Henderson Alvarez back?

I am intrigued by G Pena. He is so young, born March 92. It has to be hard facing 22-24 year old Relief Pitchers in the 6th inning onwards that are breaking ball specialists, who may even be repeating the league.
Language & culture shock are also a factor. Confidence must also be dealt with. I have faith in the Jay's development people, they know not to rush prospects.
Sierra's leg must be OK.

For a diversion here is a YouTube video posted by Kevin Gray in New Hampshire.  It is from a kids sportscaster camp run by the Fisher Cats and the kids get to call a Fisher Cat walk off win (at 90 seconds) and also talk with some players.  You see interviews with Evan Crawford, Rajai Davis, and Sal Fasano.  You can also see Mike McDade running the bases if you want to guage his speed.
