I may have mentioned this before sometime.

The Jays started the 1999 season with seven pitchers in their bullpen. Two of them were RHP Robert Person, who was 6'0", and RHP Peter Munro, who was 6'2". Obviously, neither of these men were midgets. Yet they were dwarfed by the other five relievers on the Jays' staff, all of whom clocked in at 6'5" or taller.

Who were these five pitchers? No fair looking it up.

(To give you some idea: you know one of them quite well; you probably remember two others pretty well and were particularly fond of one of them; you probably forgot that the last two even existed.)

By comparison, here's how this year's bullpen looks:

Rauch 6'10"
Camp 6'0"
Zep 6'1"
Frasor 5'9"
Janssen 6'3"
Villanueva 6'2"
Dotel 6'0"
Perez 6'0"
Purcey 6'4"
Francisco 6'2"
Richmond 6'5"

Only one I can remember is Graeme Long. He was a pretty tall Australian lefty IIRC.

Graham Lloyd not Long.

Plesac's the only one I can think of without looking it up.

The main guys I remember from that year are Quantrill and Koch, and they started the year on the DL and in the minors, respectively.

Indeed! Graeme Lloyd. I remember we traded him to the Yankees right? Was he part of the Homer Bush deal?

I looked it up and saw that he's not, but I would have guessed NBA power forward Mark Hendrickson.

Plesac (6'5") and Lloyd (6'8") are correct. You're still missing the best-known one and the two obscure ones.

I'll toss a hint out there.  The best known one is not known for his relief work.

Doc pitched a fair bit out of the bullpen in 1999 - I'm sure most of his innings came as a starter, but he did spend a few weeks in the pen.

Chris Carpenter was on that team, but I'm sure he was in the rotation.

Halladay (6'6") is correct. The two obscure ones are still out there.

Just guessing Tim ? who got injured 3rd round draft pick & initials BB who walked everyone but nobody could hit him especially in the minors.

I can't think of who the guys are that you're talking about but your descriptions don't match the two guys left to guess.

Is Tom Davey one of them?
Matthew E - Tuesday, April 26 2011 @ 11:38 AM EDT (#233571) #
Tom Davey (6'7") is correct! One to go.

Here's a hint for the remaining guy: his brother is currently a major league player, and not a pitcher. The brother's only 6'3", though.

I can't think of who the guys are that you're talking about

I suspect he was talking about Tim Crabtree and Brian Bowles. I used to think Bowles might turn into a decent reliever. Anyhow, I have no idea who the missing reliever is.

Bill Risley?

I remember rule 5 draftee Eric Ludwick was pretty tall and he started a season before getting shipped back, but I don't recall if this is the right time period.

Eric Ludwick (6'5" and brother of OF Ryan Ludwick) is correct. Recapping the answers, that's Roy Halladay, Dan Plesac, Graeme Lloyd, Tom Davey, and Eric Ludwick.

Nice work, everyone.

In my memory, Risley had also been part of this bullpen and he was certainly a tall guy, but it turns out that he wasn't with the Jays that year.
