Tuesday: With apologies to my fellow roster members, I'm bumping this to the top as I feel like it got buried under the deluge of posts from yesterday. If you're interested in having a beer over a game next week during the Rangers series, I'd love your feedback! Will make an announcement soon.

The first Beer Club will be next week during the Rangers series (Mon-Wed). I figure weekdays are best for these things, though I'm not sure we should stick to a consistent day - it can be dictated by the team's schedule.

1. Are you interested? (just to get a handle on numbers)

2. Day preference for this particular week?

3. The big question is where we should hold it. Opera Bob's is a good option in that it's a very baseball-friendly bar that would definitely have the game and probably the sound on. It's non-ideal in that it's not on the subway line, but it's not too bad to get to from the subway line (it's at Dundas and Ossington, so take appropriate transit from either St. Patrick or Ossington station).

A bar near Union station would be ideal for many who commute on the Go train. Real Sports is a great sports bar, but will probably be focused on NBA/NHL playoffs for the next month (and it's also kinda pricey). Anyone know any other good options near Union?

John Northey suggested Yorkdale for those who commute by the 401. It's a good idea, but are there any bars at Yorkdale? Anyone know?

I guess another option would be somewhere more subway-central, like Yonge/Bloor or St. George. I don't know any baseball bars around there but a big enough group in a generic sports bar could probably convince the bar to flip to the game.

Anyway, what's your preference on location? Ideally we'll change this up each time we do this to give everyone a chance to get involved.

I'll make an announcement about the first beer club in a couple days once you guys give me your feedback!

I don't get out to bars to watch many games, although I did make it to Opera Bob's for the season opener, and it was a blast. Off-hand I can't think of any on the subway line. Betty's on King is about a 10 minutes walk east from Yonge subway, they have a decent upstairs with a decent-sized TV that not too many people use. It has comfy chairs, couches, and you can order drinks by sliding a note down a cord to the bar. www.bettysonking.com. Food is ok, although the fries get cold in about 30 seconds.

West Coast Bauxites, would there be any interest in setting something like this up in Vancouver?
Parker - Tuesday, April 19 2011 @ 11:51 AM EDT (#233026) #
I'm down. I'm not quite West Coast, but I'm always looking for an excuse to go to Vancouver. I'll already be there Canada Day weekend for the NOFX show, so a July 3 afternoon game would be ideal. Otherwise, I'm game for other dates assuming they fit my work schedule and I don't already have more important plans in Calgary.

I really should get something like this going in Calgary...although I don't really know many Jays fans in this city.

It's a cool idea though.

great idea dave!

there's a fox and fiddle on the danforth that has loads of space and tvs, and a friendly staff, but id try and go to this anywhere on the subway line.  ive also heard good things about opera bobs.

I'm in.
eventually there'll be a shoeless joe's at spadina stn.... it's undergoing slow renos now.

also might as well mention here,  Dave and I have VERY tentatively thrown out the idea of a day trip to buffalo to see a AAA game. Bus station is right next to the field, and booking via megabus early enough can give you a 1$ trip. not cheap, but if there's a big time IL AAA prospect playing at any point, may be worth a trip.

Opera Bob's is great.  Also - The Pump on Bloor (near Brunswick) is a pretty good and convenient place to watch a game.

As a very frequent reader (and sadly a much less frequent poster) I like this idea very much.

Well, if there's anyone else in Silicon Valley....

What does a beer go for in Silicon Valley? $20?

I know there's at least a couple of us. I'm assuming that BalzacChieftan guy is from Balzac, unless the name means something else, or there's another Balzac somewhere other than north of Calgary. There are a couple of people on some other Jays blogs and forums who hail from Calgary as well. I sure wouldn't mind getting together for a few beers to watch a game. The old lady is very patient and has come a long way as a baseball fan since I first cursed her with my obsession, but I'd be all for getting together with some "real" Blue Jays fans too.

There's a Moxie's in Yorkdale with plenty of TVs.

I live in the downtown west neighbourhood, so opera bob's is close by.  I didn't know it was baseball friendly, never been in it, what is it like?
Dave Rutt - Wednesday, April 20 2011 @ 02:05 PM EDT (#233178) #
james, it's a pretty small, normal bar, they just play jays games all the time, and jays fans hang out there

Well, if it's a male beer, it would probably go for silicone. Then again, in San Francisco, the female beers probably would too :-) (baddum, crash)

I'm not much of a bar person.. But, I think $5-7 gets you a beer lots of places here.. I think it's around $7-8 at an A's game.. Definitely planning to go in August this year, if the Jays aren't completely out of it. Since it's a weekend, the wife may even come along! And, maybe, just maybe, we'll consider taking the 4-year-old daughter..

John (Northey) - IIRC, you have several girls - how did you get them interested in baseball, etc?
Mike Green - Wednesday, April 20 2011 @ 03:36 PM EDT (#233195) #
Same way that you get boys interested in baseball.  Take them to a game.  Play catch when they're really young.  And then get them working on ERAs to hone their math skills when they are a little older. :)

I have seen one of my neighbours in the Coventry Hills area of Calgary with multiple pieces of Jays gear.
Kelekin - Wednesday, April 20 2011 @ 05:41 PM EDT (#233205) #
@Parker:

Yeah, Jays fans do obviously exist here...and I have seen a few over time on the various forums throughout the year.  But the chances of going to a pub and the game being on?  That's a toughie.

Otherwise, it'd probably be good to get a fairly central location if we did do one in Calgary...or at least something not far from a C-Train (I'm down in the South).

How about taking advantage of the Live Chat option on this site during game time ? If they know each other, real life meeting in cities (T.O., Calgary, Vancouver) can be organized. A drawback is typing.

Sorry for the insane tardiness of response, but it's possible that was me you've seen. Coventry is my current stomping ground and I do rock the Bautista jersey and a retro cap pretty regularly when I'm in town. Although, I'm sure I'm not the only Jays fan in the entire neighbourhood.

I'm pretty flexible on location. I'm not home much, so any sort of offline social activity is a big deal for me...

There has to be some kind of watering hole in Calgary where we could get them to put the Jays game on a big screen if a few of us were asking for it. Are there any other Calgarians lurking here who might be interested?
