Las Vegas 1  Sacramento 2

The 51s traveled to Sacramento to play in front of 5,529 Bees fans.  They out hit the Bees 10 to 3, but when it was all over they were down by one run, leaving 8 runners stranded on base.  Brad Mills  worked well with 7 IP, allowing only 1 hit, striking out 3 and 1 earned run.  Sean Henn came on with 2 IP with 1 hit and a K.  Chad Cordero (0-1) came on in the 10th to close, but he hit a batter, gave up a single and a sac fly to lose the game.  The 51s were good in the field, suffering no errors.

The Las Vegas 1 run offence was led by two 51s who had a 3 hit game.  Brett Lawrie (3 for 5, k) and Adam Loewen (3 for 5, 2 Ks) had three hits each but no more.  Las Vegas DH Ryan Shealy (1 for 4, 2 Ks, RBI) produced the evenings only run with a single after Chris Woodward (1 for 4, R, 2 BB) walked and scored after moving to third on a single by Loewen.  Darin Mastoianni (1 for 5, K), Eric Thames (1 for 5, K) also had a single each.  Mike McCoy (0 for 5, 2Ks), Brian Jeroloman (0 for 4, 2ks) and David Cooper (0 for 3, 2BB) were hitless on the night.

New Hampshire 3  Binghampton 2

The Fisher Cats saved the excitement for the top of the ninth in front of 4,322 Binghampton faithful and plated 2 on a 2 out double by John Tolisano (1 for 4, 2B, 2Ks).  Alan Farina earned his second save smoking Binghampton in the bottom of the 9th with 2 fly outs and a K.  Matt Daly (2-0) picked up the W with 1.2 IP with a BB and a hit.  Reliever Evan Crawford struck out 3 and allowed a run on 1 hit in 1.1 IP.  Starter B.J. Other than Tolisano, Fisher Cats bats also had a noteworthy night with Mike McDade (3 for 4) showing us another 3 hit game and Jonathan Diaz (1 for 4)  extending his hit streak to 6 games with a single.  McDade (.375 AVE, .412 OBP, .881 OPS) and Diaz (.333 AVE, 500 OBP, .889 OPS) are on top of Fisher Cats batting  stats so far in this young season.  Adeiny Hechavarria (1 for 4, R) and Anthony Gose (1 for 3, BB, RBI) broke their bat struggles with singles.

Dunedin 0   Tampa 1

Just under 500 Dunedin Fans saw the home boys spread out 6 hits and come up empty-handed on runs, bowing to Tampa 1-0 with the Yankees’ only run coming on a passed ball by A.J. Jimenez (1 for 4, 2Ks).  Starter Chad Jenkins (0-2) took  the loss, throwing 6.0 IP, striking out 6, walking 2 and allowing 4 hits and the lone run on a passed ball.  Casey Beck and Shawn Griffith came on for 3 innings total of scoreless baseball.

Despite the six hits, only D-Jays a Brad Glenn (1 for 4, K) and Justin Jackson (1 for 4, K) are showing any prowess at the plate so far this season with .310 and .412 averages respectively.  Ivan Contreras (1 for 4, K), Ryan Goins (1 for 4, 2Ks), Kevin Ahrens (1 for 4, K), and A.J. ....the loan run on a passed ball....

He should ask for that one back.

Great pitching on the farm.
I am glad to see B Mills continue to pitch well, I am convinced that given the opportunity he will do well enough in the Majors to be of value.
As a prospect Jenkins results (only 2 games) this year are very good. Mamboon, did you see the game, if so how was that much talked about sinker of his. What else was he using and what were the overall results. I ask because sometimes the whole line up is weak, which makes the pitcher look better than he is.

Brett Lawrie was #4 on the Baseball America Hot Sheet this week.  They also had Drew Hutchison as the "Helium Watch" and had this to say....

When Hutchison signed, he featured an 88-92 mph to go with an erratic, but promising low-80s slider and a useful changeup. Now he's sitting at 92-95 mph, and his slider has become a potentially devastating 86-88 mph rapier.

I would've liked to see Hutchison challenged with high-A to start the year.  A rotation of Deck, Wojo, Jenkins, Alvarez, and Hutchison was something worth dreaming on.

In transaction news, Al Quintana has been released.  It really seemed like he had been with the Blue Jays forever...surprisingly, it was only six minor league seasons.

Randy Boone has been placed on the DL, he came out of his last start with an injury.  With Luis Perez with the Jays the 51's are down two starters.  Chad Cordero made one start and it looks like someone has been promoted from New Hampshire to fill in for Perez.  My guess is Willie Collazo.  Collazo was due to start today for the Fisher Cats but the starter is now listed as Chad Beck, was was a starter with Dunedin.  The moves will become clearer tonight or tomorrow.  Dunedin has Brandon Morrow to fill a spot, at least through Sunday.

I wonder if Alvarez is close to making his return.

Anyone know where Roan Salas is, by the way? (The rule 5 draft pick from TB)

Would the Jays sign Shawn Hill to AAA ? If Collazo was promoted just to make one start, a better option is giving a chance to another pitcher (Hill) who would perform better than Collazo. I felt sorry for Quintana. He seems to be a thrown in at all level of minor league, based on the Baseball reference stats. But he didn't perform well in 2009 at AA for more than 300 AB either.

I would agree on signing Shawn Hill, but then again, my personal opinion would be to put Stewart in AAA, so...

Either way, Hill performed well when he returned from injury.

The errors are starting to add up for Brett Lawrie. He needs more time.

a couple of other potential solutions to a short AAA rotation - Anyone know when Bobby Ray is coming back, or what his issue is?

The other thought is - Lamura at AA is 30, he's an organizational solder anyway.

I do really like the Hill idea though - when he was released i was all over that thought but, conversely, maybe he was released because he got hurt again?

dunno if any of the other unsigned guys floating around are in game shape. I think Ian Snell is still free.

Oh, and Ray Gonzalez has been to AAA (and bombed) before and i doubt he is really considered the sort of prospect they'd want to be careful about promoting.
