No matter what anyone else does, Seattle Mariner rookie Tom Wilhelmsen should run away with AL Comeback Player of the Year.

What? A rookie can't win that award! Yeah, that's probably true, but it shouldn't detract from your enjoyment of this classic story from former Torontonian Geoff Baker for the Seattle Times.

Hell, I'll root for him.

I'm probably oversensitive, but I find the Pot Clause in the Minor League contract vs the Major League one to be particularly crazy-making.

I don't see what the big deal was - I think C.C. Sabathia has a bigger case of the munchies than this kid ever did.

That being said, I wish him well.  Good comeback story.

I'm surprised there was no big deal made about Wilhelmsen's skin colour.  Regardless, congratulations to him.

On another note, there was quite the story about Pete Walker's young daughter and her fight against bone cancer during Sportsnet's MLB Season Preview 2011 show.   Doctors said her leg would have to be amputated but John McDonald spearheaded a collection to help cover the cost of an alternative treatment.  As a result, she still has two legs.  It will be on again tonight.  Check your local listings.

Wilhemsen was a server at a "tiki-riffic" place called The Hut in Tucson.  If he makes good, the story sounds like movie material- like The Rookie, but less Disney.

How appropriate that the best player on a miserable birthday team for opening day would be Happy Jack Stivetts.

Honestly, Mike ... he throws one pitch, in the regular season, he's made good. In the Baseball Almanac  for  the rest of recorded history, just like the  kid fom Field of Dreams. :-)

And I don't think anyone touches it as a movie -- too similar to The Rookie, which didn't do ALL  that well -- unless he blows the lid off the AL or something.
