Like that, only like this.

Remember last year we tried to predict which pitchers would get how many starts? Let's do that again this year. Only this time, instead of doing starting pitchers, I say we do third basemen. Here's my ballot, and remember that the numbers have to add to 162, and we're predicting starts at third base, not games played at third base. Deadline for predictions is first pitch of Opening Day.

Jose Bautista 110
Edwin Encarnacion 38
John McDonald 2
Mike McCoy 10
Brett Lawrie 2
Aaron Hill 0
Brad Emaus 0
someone currently outside the organization 0

If you can think of any other names you want to guess, by all means pile 'em in there.

Brad Emaus?  Was he returned by the Mets while I was off in Arizona?

I think Lawrie show up early-mid May and gets the bulk of the work with McD/McC filling in for days off.

Could it be that Emaus' name appears in contemplation of the possibility that the Mets return him during spring training? That possibility is aided by an OPS of .519.

That's what I was thinking. Sure, Emaus is outside the organization now, but there's a much greater chance of his playing 3B for the Jays than, say, Evan Longoria.

I'll  buck the trend here and say that Bautista spends most of the season there, with Lawrie getting a cup of coffee.

Bautista - 135
McDonald - 5
Encarnacion - 12
Lawrie - 10

Leave it to (a) subversive to buck the trend :)

Since there are seemingly infinite possibilities, I won't predict actual numbers of games played, but will say that my preference is that Encarnacion starts the season there, with Rivera DHing. If Lawrie forces a callup, then EE slides in to DH,and Rivera's new nickname is going, going, Juan.

While I'm living in this fantasy world, I'd also see Colby Rasmus becoming a Jay at the cost of Drabek and Gose. (or Rivera!)
DaveB - Saturday, March 12 2011 @ 04:20 PM EST (#231234) #

Still way too many possibilities with three weeks to Opening Day, so to continue the theme of living in a fantasy (in which there is absolutely no room for a Drabek-Gose trade for Rasmus, yikes!!), I'll live in mine for a little longer and pencil in someone not in the organization for 100-plus games. Defense is the big question this year and I don't believe the answer is in the most likely configuration of the ST status quo. Nor do I think Lawrie should jump from a AA second baseman to a Major League third baseman. Great spring and I believe in him as the team's future third baseman, but there's no hurry.

My new flavour of the week for possible trade acquisition is Alberto Callaspo. A capable defensive third baseman with position versatility, can play second if Hill isn't healthy, a switch-hitter who had a good season in 09, probably just a backup for the Angels so might not cost much more than spare parts in the outfield or bullpen.

Someone not in the organization - 110 games
Encarnacion - 20 games
Lawrie - 20 games (all in September)
McDonald -  7 games
Bautista - 5 games

Oxygen8 - Sunday, March 13 2011 @ 04:28 AM EDT (#231247) #
Lawrie 162
DJR - Sunday, March 13 2011 @ 05:20 AM EDT (#231249) #
Oxygen8 is going to win this - unless someone posts 161. I can't bring myself to do it.

Jose Bautista 51
Edwin Encarnacion 26
John McDonald 4
Mike McCoy 0
Brett Lawrie 81
Aaron Hill 0
Brad Emaus 0

If Lawrie spends half the season in AAA, then Encarnacion will see some time at 3rd with McCoy and MacD getting late inning time as pinch runners and defensive replacements.

What, is he Evan Longoria?!
Mike Green - Monday, March 14 2011 @ 01:31 PM EDT (#231278) #
Yep.  He's going to be a cornerstone of the franchise, I think.  The club will realize that having a good Canadian ballplayer in the prime of his career is going to be worth more to them than to any other club.

The Jays have brought back Chris Woodward according to MLB Trade Rumors.  I assume Woodward will head to AAA initially.  This might be a sign that Mike McCoy will stick with the Jays.

Bautista 51
Encarnacion 15
McDonald 9
McCoy 4

Great question Mathew E, because IMO it is tough to answer.
I am not sure what AA's goal for 2011 is but I am thinking it is a trial run for a competitive team in the near future. $20mil for a bullpen and an emphasis on versatility in the position players is some kind of statement.
Injuries & regulars needing a day off happen, but IMO maybe AA has a plan to deal with this. 2011 may be a good year to have an excess of youth because of the uncertainty of a Hills future/options & the success of the experiment at 1st base. So Lawrie could play some 2nd as part of his versatility development as injuries happen over the years.

My humble guess is:-

Bautista 75
Lawrie 70
J Mac 4
McCoy 13

A lot of our predictions sounded kind of silly when the Jays suddenly announced that Bautista would play right and Encarnacion would move to third.

But after that first series... who knows?

And we all whiffed on Jayson Nix. Did any of us vote for him? Nix.

bpoz - Tuesday, April 05 2011 @ 11:36 AM EDT (#232154) #
Nix... Someone outside the organization. Congratulations to 2 Bauxites. Not me, I picked 0 for outsiders & 0 for EE.
