Gary Sheffield, who did not play in the majors in 2010, officially announced his retriement from the game today. Linked only loosely to the steroids scandal of recent vintage, the ex-Brewer-Padre-Marlin-Dodger-Brave-Yankee-Tiger-Met believes he belongs among baseball's enshrined:

"I am sure it will be mentioned and debated but from my standpoint I know who is in the Hall of Fame," Sheffield told the newspaper. "A lot of them don't belong in the Hall of Fame. If someone wants to debate me, check the stats."

So, Bauxites, whatchathink? Will the Hall be open to inducting a new Sheff someday soon?

I guess it depends on how much you discount due to his attittude.  His numbers are pretty incredible, and as he mentions, a lot better than a lot of people in the Hall.

He'll hang around at the low end of the percentage list for a few years, then drop off.  I predict five years max.

Funny how close Sheffield was to being a 4 decade player - playing in the 80's/90's/00's but just shy of the 10's. Advantage of coming up when you are just 19.

When he first came up if you said that this 19 year old shortstop would hit 509 home runs with 1676 RBI, and make 9 all-star teams you'd have thought he was a lock. What is odd is how he has just 4 'black ink' points. That made me do a double take. For a guy with over 500 HR and a lifetime 292 average to just get 4 BI points is very, very odd.

The steroids mixed with attitude will cost him big-time on votes but by the time he gets there a lot of the steroid stuff will hopefully have been hammered out. I suspect he'll get around 10% for a few years then start climbing as the memories of his attitude fade and memories of his solid hitting stick ala Jim Rice. Writers won't put him in, but eventually the veterans committee will along with others of the steroid era. Wouldn't be surprised if they try to create a special area for guys from that era just to make sure people remember the issues.

BBRef has his most comparable player as Reggie Jackson.  It's an interesting comparison from a number of perspectives.  He is pretty comparable to Mark McGwire, as well.

Without the PED issue, I think that he would eventually go in, and it would be merited.  With it, who knows?  Personally, I wouldn't vote for him, and I wouldn't vote for McGwire either.

I'm glad Gary thinks so highly of Gary.
