Interesting thought while scanning past the MLB network recently and hearing metnion of 1979 as a  great year of champions for the city of Pitttsburgh-- the Steelers of '78 won the Jamuary 1979 Super Bowl and later that same year, the We-Are-Fam-a-lee Pirates knocked off the Orioles in the World Series. It made me wonder -- how often has something like this happened in one calendar year for one city?

I can think of just two off the top of my head -- the 1987-88 Lakers preceded their City of Angels brethren the Dodgers in a shared championship year.; and the 1968 New York Jets won th Impossible Dream Super Bowl III  in January of 1969, the same year that brought us the Micacle Amazing Mets in October (Also, ironically, over the Baltimore Orioles.)

Close bu t no cigar: the 2007-08 Celtics actually won their title in 2008, the calendar year AFTER the Red Sox win their second title in four years (that still seems strange to write) ... but wait, there's a nother one ... that first Sawx title in  2004 was in the same calendar year the Pats -- not officially a "Boston" home team, but close enough, hey? -- closed out a Super Bowl title on Feb. 1.

There must be others ... let's limit it to the big four, the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB ... who's missing? And which is the most impressive?

Most impressive? Well, I'll be WAY impresed if anyone can argue a candidate in front of New York '69. Two titles, designated "Impossible Dream" and "Miracle"? Hard to beat.

1927: The Yanks: 'Nuff said. The Giants wen 11-1-1, tying 0-0 and losing 6-0, allowing 20 points all season.  In terms of sheer dominance, this might have to win. The Rangers and Yanks won their leagues in 1928.

1989: San Francisco wins the Super Bowl, Oakland beats San Francisco in the World Series. San Francisco then won the Super Bowl next season.

The '69-70 Knicks also won the NBA championship. And boy, did Baltimore hate seeing teams from NYC that year - the '69 Mets beat the Orioles in the World Series, the '69 Jets beat the Colts in the Super Bowl (or was it still called the AFL-NFL Championship Game back then?), and the aforementioned Knickerbockers beat the Baltimore Bullets, but only in the first round of the playoffs (for the 2nd consecutive year)

The winner has to be 1980 Philadelphia.  Only one title, but consider:

* The '80 Phillies won the World Series

* The '79-80 76ers won the Eastern Conference and lost in the NBA Finals

* The '79-80 Flyers won the Campbell Conference and lost in the Stanley Cup Finals

* The '80 Eagles won the NFC and lost in the Super Bowl

That's some high-quality local sports viewin'.

Allright, you didn't list the CFL, but, let's say you allowed it..

If you look at 1978-1990... Edmonton won 7 Grey Cups and 5 Stanley Cups.. (both in 1987). The only years in that 13 year span that one or the other professional sports team didn't win a title were '83,  '86 and '89. And in '83, the Oilers were in the Cup finals, and in '86, the Eskimos lost the Grey Cup game.

That's 12 out of 13 years of one or the other team in the finals, including 12 championships. Being an Edmontonian in the 80s could sure have warped your sense of how often teams win!

(yes, yes, I know. The CFL is a small league, and it's easier to win, etc..).

Celtics followed the Red Sox 2007 WS win with a championship in the 07-08 season.

Does that count for something?

nevermind, if I read more thoroughly I see you covered this and the Patriots as DISQUALIFIED
