Here's a Pinch Hit from intrepid correspondent Ron.

One of Paul Beeston’s priorities, since returning to the Jays organization, has been to
brand the Blue Jays as Canada’s team. The most recent step in this process is the 2011
Winter Tour. Various members of the organization have traveled to three provinces in the
past three weeks to promote the Jays. The publicity tour has included autograph signings,
skills clinics, television and radio interviews, school and hospital visits, and even an on-
ice hockey “shooting” competition.

Once I knew the Jays were coming to town, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to attend.
Even with the sizable amount of Jays fans in attendance at Safeco Field each season, I’ve
never really felt like there was a large Jays following in Vancouver. The majority of my
friends couldn’t even name a single player on the roster. I arrived 30 minutes before the
scheduled signing time, expecting there to be maybe 10 to 15 people ahead of me. As
you can see from the first picture, the lineup was packed. By the time the players arrived,
I had lost track of how many people were in line. (Contrary to any stereotypes you may
have picked up on the internet, many of the baseball fans there were under the age of 25.)

The four players that made an appearance in Vancouver were J.P. Arencibia, Jesse
Litsch, Scott Richmond, and Ricky Romero. With the recent blockbuster trade, I asked
Arencibia if he was worried his playing time would be reduced with the acquisition of
Mike Napoli and he confidently replied “not at all”. As long time readers of Da Box
know, I used to be a very vocal critic of Ricky Romero. I know I’ve used his name and
the word “bust” in the same sentence on numerous occasions. I actually told Romero
I thought he was a bust back in 2008 based on his performance in New Hampshire.
Romero has clearly turned into a solid big league pitcher and I mentioned he has proved
me wrong. All four of the players were very nice and I’ll definitely be rooting harder for
these guys after getting the chance to meet them.

Based on the success of the 2011 Winter Tour, I believe we will see a 2012 version with
the addition of more cities. There is room for improvement, though. While I’m not going
to complain about receiving a free toque, there was no Jays merchandise for sale. A
question-and-answer segment between the players and the fans would have been nice.
How many more days until Opening Day?

If there was a sports store or even a clothing store near there they should've had a Jays merchandise selection out in the open. Lost opportunity if they didn't. Of course, many probably thought like you did, that there would be a small crowd, not what was there.

I strongly suspect the Jays were surprised by the demand for the caravan this year and are probably kicking themselves for not doing it in the past few years (decades, whatever).

No one in Alberta or B.C. has Rogers Digital Cable, so this was the first time the residents of those provinces had seen the Blue Jays since July.

Thanks, Ron.

Original Ryan mentioned that Nat Bailey would need stadium renos to bring it up to current AAA standards.  I wonder how much those would cost; it sure looks like a Jay triple A affiliate would do very well in Vancouver.

Gracias for the report, Ron!

I think the Winter Caravan is a nice step but it would be great to have a few more Ontario stops (Barrie for one :D!) like they did in the past and I would like to see a JaysFest at the Dome, similar to what other teams do such as the Cubs, White Sox, or Pirates.  Why can't it be March already?

Nice little update. Good point on the imder-25s, but what about kids? Were there many munchkins there? Any team needs to always be marketing to the impressionable potential lifelong fan!

As I think was discussed in the thread discussing the Jays/Canadians affiliation, the AAA experience in Vancouver was mixed.  The attendance was ok but not outstanding and ownership was choppy - Molsons put a great deal of attention on getting a major league team (which has the not surprising side effect of making locals believe that the minor league product is inferior) and then subsequent ownership (not including the present owners who appear to be very solid) was not really up to AAA standards.  However, the main issue for full season ball of any kind is the weather.  April and June are usually two of the wetter months of the year.  In some years the number of early season rainouts really created scheduling problems.  The rainshadow from the Olympic Mountains creates far far fewer problems in Everett and Tacoma.  There is fairly solid baseball interest here in Vancouver and the Jays continue to be more popular than the Mariners.

There were plenty of kids at the Winter Tour and to the Jays credit, mascot Ace was in attendance and available for pictures.

On the marketing front, the Jays still have a long way to go. I agree with #2JBrumfield that there should have been more stops in Ontario. Considering the Jays have major attendance issues, a Jays Fest should have been held at the Skydome. The Jays didn’t have a single public autograph session for fans in the GTA. While the team is rebuilding, they need to focus on more promotions (i.e. more giveaway days, more all you can eat games, etc…). The ticket packages and perks on the Jays website is very uninspiring. The Jays have alienated a large percentage of their GTA ticket buying base and are doing very little to try to bring them back inside the Stadium.

100% agreement with Ron.  Most teams do some sort of mid-winter Fan Fest to beat the drum for the upcoming season.  The Jays?  Nada!  It's almost like they're embarrassed to promote the team locally.
