Offence was the theme for winning Saturday night on the farm with Las Vegas and Auburn bats burning brightly.  And 9 K’s from Dunedin pitching helped them past the Yankees.  New Hampshire saw some good individual performances but fell short to Portland.

What a wild fifth inning for Auburn-Batavia, 20 runs in one inning. Batavia batted around in the top of  the inning, 11 batters; Auburn batted around TWICE.

Henderson
Alvarez made another mid-game appearance out of the bullpen, second time that's happened in the last few days. One and a third innings, struck out the side in his full inning mixed in with a double. Looks like he will be a  reliever in the FSL playoffs.

Good to see Shawn Hill back and pitching well.  The 51s end their season on Monday, and the Jays will call up several pitchers from Las Vegas on Tuesday -- probably 4 pitchers, according to Gaston yesterday.  One of those 4 will step into the rotation immediately to replace Morrow.  (And I wonder if Zep's spot in the rotation might also be available at some point, if he doesn't improve soon?)

The leading candidates for promotion would be Mills, Richmond, Hill, Roenicke, Accardo, Rommie Lewis and Robert Ray.  So, choose 4 from that list of 7 pitchers.  I'm guessing that Accardo might not be rewarded for his latest outburst of discontent.  Lewis doesn't seem to be on the current Las Vegas roster -- is he injured?   Robert Ray has the worst numbers of the 7 candidates, so he might not come up.  Brad Mills seems a virtual lock to be promoted.  Assuming that Richmond and Hill are fully healthy, I'd love to see them in the majors this month, putting them in competition for the rotation or bullpen in 2011.  Roenicke might get the other promotion.

Correction:  Ray has the 2nd-worst numbers of the 7 candidates.  Lewis is at the bottom.  What happened to him, anyway?  That whole try-him-as-a-starter thing seemed to be less than a roaring success.

Lewis failed (by the numbers anyway) as a starter but he did well in relief. the ERA doesn't show it of course but that's because he was allowed to absorb 9 runs in one appearance in which he only recorded one out, which practically doubled his relief ERA.
and he took a few hits in his first few outings after going back to the pen, but he's run off 7.1 scoreless innings before that 9 run disaster.

The jays must have liked what they saw because they've already recalled him and Roenicke, along with Huff

Thanks for the update, WillRain.   So that takes care of the relievers -- the Jays couldn't even afford to wait for the end of the Las Vegas season, they decided to promote Roenicke and Lewis today.   And Roenicke has already recorded a key out for the Jays in today's game.   Now the question is whether Richmond or Hill will be promoted, alongside Brad Mills who seems near-certain to be promoted.  Given the fact that Cecil might need to be shut down if he reaches his innings limit, and given the fact that Zep is sometimes pitching only 3 or 4 innings per outing, I think the Jays should promote all three of those pitchers.
TamRa - Sunday, September 05 2010 @ 03:49 PM EDT (#221982) #
Hill is certainly trying to force it - at this point I'm thinking Mills might be in third place.

If senority matters, Richmond will get Morrow's starts. Cecil will probably come up two starts short and someone will get those.

There's probably no upside in replacing Zep unless they identify something specifically wrong (an injury or a mechanical flaw they want to work on on the side) but they could concievably replace him and try him in the pen since he seems to usually start off strong.

My guess is that Richmond, Hill, and Mills will all log innings in Toronto this month.

Ok, check that.

Richmond is listed as the Vegas starter today. If in fact he does start he can't start for Morrow on Wed. Hill started yesterday so he'd be on three days rest.

That suggests either Mills, or that Cito - god forbid - just defaults to Tallet for at least one start.

Or, really long shot, the Jays decide they really don't care about the AA playoffs and recall Drabek but there's been no sign of that.

Off topic, because this is really a new thread.. But allow me to put out the call for a 'bring back O-Dawg' push.

In my opinion, Hill's defense was a major plus before this season. Not sure if he has bulked up for more home run power, but it seems to have killed his range. However, he still has that plus arm strength. This makes me believe he would be a fantastic third baseman. If anyone recalls when he broke into the league as a third baseman (Corey Koskie's broken thumb), he played decent defense. Hitting-wise, even while struggling this season, his numbers are very comparable to Brandon Inge.

O-Dawg offers a fan favourite who plays hall of fame defense, adds speed, and a decent bat. He'll probably lower the ERA's of our pitching staff (and Morrow gets his no-no).

One other thought, if Lind is indeed heir to first base, having Escobar and Hudson throwing to him makes his job easier.

Hill still seems solid in the field, especially in turning the DP, although he's made a few uncharacteristic errors of late. To my eyes, he doesn't seem as dazzling when he first came up, when he was all athleticism and amazing range. The problem with a position change IMO is that a career 756 OPS doesn't play as well at 3B (especially in the AL East). I also wonder whether the plan isn't to move Escobar to third when Hechavarria is ready for prime time (say, in 2012), although Escobar's offense has been up and down in his young career and he may be a sub-800 OPS player going forward.

Colby Rasmus has asked for a trade from St. Louis. I hope GM AA can see if he can get him. I would probably hand him exec of the year if they get a steal.

What about Emaus if Hill at 2B isn't to your liking?

greenfrog - Sunday, September 05 2010 @ 09:33 PM EDT (#221988) #
Rasmus would be an interesting addition (I'm sure half the teams in baseball will be making inquiries about him in the off-season). It's funny, I was hoping that the Cards would offer Rasmus + prospects for Doc in July 2009. Imagine a rotation headed up by Doc, Carpenter and Wainwright: three Cy Young-calibre starters, each of whom will probably throw 240 - 250 IP this year. That would be a playoff rotation to behold. At this point the Cards probably wish they'd offered Rasmus, Wallace, and an A-ball prospect or two for Doc.

I think the real question is how many more starts our pitchers will get.  Romero might only have 3-4 left, Marcum is already at 163 IP coming back from injury and Cecil as well has now surpassed last year's total.  I'm sure all of Richmond, Hill, Mills, and Rzep will get a start at some point this month.
TamRa - Sunday, September 05 2010 @ 10:33 PM EDT (#221990) #
I don't see Romero or Marcum being shut down early.
