A pretty boring night on the farm resulted in a couple of wins, a couple of losses, a couple of non-games............ oh, excuse me, I drifted off there for a minute. Boy, am I ever not selling the click-through, eh? But hey, at least that title is pretty good (awful).

Las Vegas 11 at Oklahoma City 6

Jose Molina? Who needs Jose Molina! Chris Lubanski did him one better, smacking five hits to lead the 51s to an incredible 11 run output which is almost always enough (though the pitching staff kept it fairly close). Robert Ray went 5 2/3, allowing three runs.

New Hampshire - scheduled day off

Dunedin 1 at Brevard County 4

The D-Jays put forth one of the most anemic offensive performances possible, hitting four singles and not walking. Also, two runners were thrown out on the base paths, leading the Brevard County pitchers to face only two over the minimum. Unsurprisingly, this wasn't enough to win the game, despite Chad Beck's efforts (6 IP, 3 ER).

Fort Wayne 6 at Lansing 4

Lansing used the old standby "Bookend" strategy, scoring only at the beginning and end of the game. Two runs in the first, one in the second and one in the ninth weren't enough, however, as Drew Hutchison was uncharacteristically imperfect in his second start for the Lugnuts; he gave up four runs (two earned) in five innings. Daniel Barnes relieved Hutchison and allowed the proverbial nail in the coffin, and then another nail in the same coffin.

Like in Dunedin, not much offense to speak of; Jon Del Campo had the only extra base hit, a double, to go along with his one-bagger, while Justin Jackson singled and walked.

Auburn - scheduled day off

GCL Pirates 0 at GCL Jays 1

The GCL Jays' aggregate pitching line: 9 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 0 R, 10 K. That's downright Morrow-esque! Nicholas Purdy, Chris Enourato and apparently-now-a-pitcher Sean Shoffitt combined to completely stifle the Pirates. The line-up provided just enough run support thanks to a solo home run by Pierce Rankin who, by the way, has an underratedly cool name if you ask me. P.S. despite Shoffitt's ERA in the 8s, he's pitched pretty well, especially the 19:3 K:BB in 14 innings.

DSL Angels 2 at DSL Jays 1

17 year old Luis Zerpa struck out 6 in 4 innings while allowing a single run.

Three Stars!
3. Pierce Rankin - solo homer, only run of game
2. Nicholas Purdy - 5 IP, 0 ER, 6 Ks
1. Chris Lubanski - 5 hits

Hitters and Pitchers of the Week are up at milb.com. Congrats to Brad Glenn of Lansing, the Jays' only winner this week.

The Gulf Coast League box scores show both Hobson & Crouse starting and being pulled in the 6th inning of their game against Brevard Cty.  They must have caught a really fast bus to Lansing because they started in that game as while.  The only reasonable explanation that I can figure out is that the GCL Jays had more players than uniforms and handed out their old numbers without notifying the press box of the change in new players.

Also 'Michael G'  favourite Kenny Wilson started for Dunedin in LF but went 0/3 .

Jgadfly: I believe it was an earlier game in the season that had been suspended.

The 1-0 GCL win for the Blue Jays was the completion of the Aug. 5 game that was suspended after five and a half innings. Makes for some funny  boxscores on the day, with Purdy starting both games of a "doubleheader" and of course some players now in Lansing being part of the Baby Jays lineup.  Nice scoreless outing for Shoffit  (3IP, 1H, 0BB, 4K) as he tries to turn his strong outfield arm into a pitcher's arm. It goes into the books as his performance on Aug. 5, which makes it look odd coming in between two terrible outings when in fact it's his third solid performance in a row. He's actually done pretty well overall, with eight scoreless outings in 12 games, striking out  19 in 14 innings. Reportedly he is getting his fastball into the mid 90s.

Purdy struggled a bit in the regularly scheduled game which the Jays won 5-4, giving up seven hits and two earned runs in three innings but striking out five. Kellen Sweeney had his first big pro hit, a bases-clearing double.

Barnes got nicked up a bit for Lansing but he pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four, then in his third inning of work left with two out and runners on first and second. He didn't get any help from Casey Beck, who gave up a walk and then a two-run single.

time for everybody's favourite game

Age(July1) Level  AB   Av     OB   Slg   OPS  BABIP  LD%
Player A      22.9          aa   348 .310  .357  .543  .900  .368  15.9

Player B      23.6          aa   439 .296  .375  .524  .899  .345  17.4

Player A's a current Jay.  Player B's a minor leaguer.

Player B looks like Marcus Thames.  I will guess that player A is Adam Lind.

Player B is surely Eric Thames.  He's hitting more homers and striking out more this year.  I think that he's best cast as a platoon player with a RHH who can play centerfield.  Fortunately, the minor league system does have such a player...

Jeroloman doubled and walked twice last night.

Yeah, checking stats those would be my guesses too.  Lind and Thames

The one glaring difference between the 2 is this: Eric Thanes vs. lefties .669 OPS and .281 BABIP Adam Lind vs. lefties .846 OPS and .290 BABIP Lind had hit lefties reasonably well all the way through the minors, whereas Thames has struggled much more so.

Thames is a career .760 OPS v LHP and that's still a small sample size.

He's thriving in  AA with under 700 professional at bats to his credit.  I think it's possible that we've been selling Thames short when you consider Lind was a top prospect (B+, A-).

His K rate is under 21%, which isn't bad when you're basically starting your professional career at AA.

I hope the talk of platooning Thames is as a means of easing him into a MLB lineup otherwise I can't help but feel we are jumping to conclusions much too quickly. In his short minor league career, he has hit lefties to a tune of .253/.327/.433 for an OPS of .760 in a grand total of 178 at bats. This after hitting lefties quite well in an admittedly small sample size at Pepperdine . Perhaps it would be a good idea to allow him the oppotunity to demonstrate whether he is capable of handling the port-siders over a significant number of plate appearances before deciding his fate? Looking at his performance this year against lefties, he is sporting a .281 BABIP despite posting a a 19.6% LD rate, although that may partially be a product of an increased IFF%. His K% rate is not that much different however his K/BB and BB% are both significantly worse. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing him in person and perhaps I am missing something that only direct observation would highlight, but to me it appears he just needs more ABs.

Wouldn't the Jello-man be best served to stay behind the plate?  If he can play a premium position like C well it seems they should keep him there.

My suggestion for Thames' platoon mate be this AA teammate and CF, the Mastro.  His is hitting .325/.408/.402 vs lefties.  I think he would fit into that Reed Johnson role of RH platoon guy, defensive sub and pinch runner quite well.

I think Buck's ready.  Two AB's so far in his NH rehab; two hr's, six rbi's.
