The Auburn Doubledays game was postponed because the Connecticut team bus broke down and they were unable to get home to play the game.  Dunedin were rained out so both teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday.

New Hampshire played nineteen innings and lost.  Las Vegas just had to play nine to lose.  Lansing won a close game.  Daniel Arcila of the GCL Jays had a double, a triple and a home run, but no single, as the GCL Jays won.

Las Vegas 8  Oklahoma City 10

Las Vegas had to face Derek Holland and they got to him for three runs in the third before Holland was pulled.  The 51's tallied four runs in that inning highlighted by a three run home run from Danny PeralesSean Henn threw 115 pitches in 4.2 innings and left with five runs in and the bases loaded.  Josh Roenicke came on and two hitters later there were three more runs in and now Henn was charged with eight runs.

Mike Jacobs homered in the fifth and Jarrett Hoffpauir delivered a two run double in the sixth and it was an 8-7 game.  In the seventh Brad Emaus walked, stole second and scored on a Perales single to tie the game.

Oklahoma City regained the lead with two runs off Merkin Valdez in the bottom of the seventh.   The 51's had something going in the eighth but Clay Rapada came on to strike out Mike Jacobs and Jason Lane.

Hoffpauir and Perales had two hits each.

New Hampshire 3  Altoona 4 - 19 innings

Zach Stewart was a bit shaky after his rest.  He pitched 4.2 innings and was charged with three runs on eight hits.

New Hampshire scored three runs in the third inning, Adeiny Hechavarria doubled in one run and Marcus Thames hit his 22nd home run, a two run shot.

Then the game settled down and no runs were scored from the fifth inning until the nineteenth.  BJ LaMura, Alan Farina, Trystan Magnuson, Clint Everts and Boomer Potts combined to pitch 12.2 scoreless innings.  New Hampshire had two singles to lead off the sixth and thereafter had only three hits in fourteen innings.

In the nineteenth Vince Bongiovanni was taken deep to end the game.

Darin Mastroianni, Shawn Bowman and Eric Thames had two hits each, but that was in 6 to 8 at-bats.

Dunedin at Daytona - postponed

Per the schedule the D-Jays will play doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday.

Lansing 2  Dayton 1

Good starting pitching from Dave Sever keyed the win.  Sever went six innings and gave up the one run on three hits.

The Lugnuts got their two runs in the fifth, four walks scored one run and Jake Marisnick singled in the second run.  In the bottom of the eighth Dan Barnes loaded the bases with one out but Aaron Loup came on and escaped the jam.

Marisnick and the hot Brad Glenn had two hits each.

Auburn at Connecticut - postponed due to bus

Doubleheader Saturday

GCL Blue Jays 11  GCL Yankees 5

The Jays won even though the mini evil-empire outhit the Jays 12 - 11.   The difference was three home runs hit by the Jays, solo shots by Bryson Namba and Art Charles, and a three run shot by Daniel Arcila.  Arcila also added a double and a triple, missing the single part of the cycle.  Arcila is a 20 year old Venezuelan who spent the last three years in the DSL.  Namba had two hits and three RBI's.  Ronald Melendez also had two hits.

The Jays used four pitchers, Alesone Escalante got the win.

DSL Rangers 6  DSL Blue Jays 4

Three Stars:

3rd star - Danny Perales

2nd star - Dave Sever

1st star - Daniel Arcila

Looks like Las Vegas is still a little short of good starting pitchers.  Any chance that Drabek or Stewart gets promoted to AAA for a start or two?   I know they are close to their innings limit, but they haven't been shut down yet, so why not give them a start or two at a higher level?  The other counter-argument is that the free-swinging high-scoring PCL will mess up their pitching discipline, but I don't see any harm in giving them a bigger challenge than New Hampshire for a game or two.  If it's good enough for Zep, Mills, Litsch and other rehabbing pitchers, why would it harm Drabek or Stewart? Better for them to have experience in a variety of different environments, I would think.

Incredible performance by both bullpens in the New Hampshire game as neither starter made it through the fifth inning. The bullpens had 28.2 consecutive scoreless innings between them, 15 by five Altoona relievers (six hits, just three hits in the last 13 innings), and 13.2 by six NH relievers before Bongiovanni served up the walkoff HR to the first batter in the bottom of the 19th. Former Expo prospect Clint Everts pitched five scoreless innings, one hit, a walk and four Ks. Franchise records for both teams for innings and length of game, five hours 49 minutes. I wonder if they ran out of beer.

No chance, CF.  Drabek and Stewart are in New Hampshire for the playoff run.  If they pulled them now, they'd never get a minor league franchise they wanted.  Playoff experience will be a lot more beneficial for them anyway.

Agreed, plus, even if that were not true - there's no time for an adjustment now - you can only get bad results by putting them there for maybe two starts, and then you send them into the off-season on a down note.

IF they were moving up, it would have had to have been early enough to get 5 or 6 starts there minimum.

IMO.

Joshue,

Here is a link to a 2007 scouting report on Farina ... http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2007/index.jsp?mc=farina ... . and here is a link to his Clemson profile ... http://clemsontigers.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/farina_alan00.html ... Some nice numbers in his only season at Clemson as a middle reliever.

The big thing with Farina is health. He hasn't been able to get through a full pro season in three tries without going on the DL. Elbow and shoulder injuries in his throwing arm in 2008 and 2009, not sure what the injury was this year and he didn't spend a lot of time on the DL but nevertheless it's a bad trend for a smallish build guy whose main attribute is a fastball he can get into the mid-90s. He was wild in his first game off the DL this time but seems to be in the groove again his last three appearances.

Farina caught my attention in 2007 when Auburn won the 2007 NY-Penn championship. The playoff numbers are not usually included in the internet stats databases but he was outstanding. Struck out seven of the 10 batters he faced in his first playoff appearance in relief of Rzepcynski; struck out  five of the seven batters he faced in the final game in relief of Cecil. Overall he pitched five innings, allowed two hits, no walks, struck out 12, including striking out the side in the ninth inning of both stints. If he's healthy next spring I'm sure he will be in Triple A and that will tell us a lot about his ML potential and whether his arm can stand up.

Updates from Lansing:

AJ Jimenez is not seriously injured, he has some kind of minor injury, he didn't take BP today.  He should be back soon.

Courtesy of Lugnuts broadcaster Jesse Goldberg-Strassler, things I didn't knw.

Egan Smith has an older brother who is a major leaguer, Jordan Smith of the Reds.

Michael Crouse, from Vancouver BC, has a father who played in the NFL and CFL, Ray Crouse.

Another Lansing update:

Kenny Wilson has been promoted to Dunedin.

It appears strange given Wilsons performance but I can see two reasons for it: first, Wilson might need a change of scenery or a challenge. He has been in Lansing for almost two years now and he appears to have stagnated over the past two months.

Secondly I hear Dunedin needs some help for the playoffs. Lansing are in a playoff push too but with the promotion of Marisnick and Crouse there is an excess of outfielders in Lansing.

Yeah, last night (or the night before?) Marisnick was in left and Wilson played center - i didn't care for that.
