No, it doesn't involve the Jays, calm down ... but August (post-"deadline" deals) can and do happen.

Jose Guillen, sporting a surprisingly robust slash line of .255/16/62, heads from Kansas City to San Francisco today, in exchange for a player to be named later and cash considerations. This is Guillen's TENTH big league home, which has to be at least close to a record of some sort. He not only switches teams and leagues, but also catapults from the um, not-contending Royals place of business to a real live Bayside pennant race. (SF trails the Padres by just 2.5 games and currently leads the NL Wild Card mess.)

The extremely sparse ESPN.com report of the deal is here. Any thoughts, Box Nation?

Between Guillen and Burrell, it's obvious that Sabean has developed an affection for players under the age of 35!

Sabean has certainly got an affection for designated hitters. His pitchers had better hope they can get rid of any fly ball tendencies they might have.

Seriously, though, how and where does one look up "most teams played for, career"? Some LOOGY somewhere has probably suited up for 13 or 14 teams, but 10 sure SOUNDS like a lot.

My first instinct is to look at Bob McClure's career.

Wiki answers says that it is Mike Morgan.  I won't vouch for the accuracy of the claim except to say that I verified that Morgan did play for 12 teams.

Of ex-Jays, the well-traveled Boomer Wells played for 9 teams in 21 years, while the Matt Stairs has 12 teams (and counting?) over 18.

As a long time Giants fan, I'd say it probably helps the team.  Burrell has been surprisingly good since they picked him up, maybe they can catch another lucky break if Guillen gets hot.  When he's on a roll, he can be very good.  Outfield defense looks pretty shaky if they use Burrell and Guillen at the same time, and I imagine that will be the case at least for the time being.  Torres/Rowand are going to have to cover a lot of ground in CF.  Schierholtz probably gets in a lot of games as a defensive replacement.  I would think they'll move Huff back to 1B, and then 3 of Sandoval, Uribe, Renteria and Sanchez will man the other IF positions with Posey behind the dish.  Too bad Sandoval has had such a down season, or they'd probably be ahead of SD right now.

No idea what they're giving up for Guillen, but I doubt it's a significant prospect.  Then again, the Giants have a long history of giving up good young players for limited return - I still remember George Foster for Frank Duffy, and don't mention that Liriano/Nathan/Bonser thing - oh, I guess I just did.  I was surprised they gave up Alderson for Sanchez last year, but Alderson has been pounded in the Pitt minor league system this year, so they may have been right about him.

Thoughts?

er....thanks for Fred Lewis, SF!

No kidding... Slash lines of the meaningful variety:

Guillen .255/.314/.429 (437 PA)
Lewis .271/.334/.443 (390 PA)

Occasionally on BBTF I see articles posted about how Dodgers management is unhappy with Kemp (Posters there refer to the Bill James rule about bad teams blame their best players). While I would be surprised if they did move him, I can't help but wonder what it would take for the Jays to pick him up

I like Kemp, but why break up the best OF in baseball (Snider-Wells-Bautista) ?

Mick Doherty - Friday, August 13 2010 @ 04:49 PM EDT (#220703) #

I still remember George Foster for Frank Duffy

Now, now, don't undersell -- it was Foster for Duffy AND RHP Vern Geishert. Ol' Vern never pitched for the Giants, but he'd never pitched for the Reds, either, debuting and finishing his big league career with the 1969 Angels.

P.S. I remember the trade too, but I grew up in Ohio, so may think of it somewhat differently ...

Yes, Vern Geishert. That was almost a deal-breaker, wasn't it? The Giants had to have him.

If you like Romero, Marcum, Cecil, Morrow and Rzep as the rotation next year, what do you think of the idea of throwing Drabek and Stewart plus something at San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez plus a negotiating window this December?

It seems that most of the big spenders (New York, Boston, St.Louis, Philly) are full at 1B and may be a good time to try to make a play for AGon.  Especially considering that Wallace has been turned into a future asset.

uglyone - Saturday, August 14 2010 @ 01:32 PM EDT (#220738) #
I'd love to be in on both the Gonzalez and Fielder sweepstakes.

How Rzep does the rest of the year could end up being really important....if he gets back to last year's form, then suddenly we're truly 6-deep in quality MLB-ready SP talent (with those 5 + Drabek), and any one of those guys could be a solid centrpiece in a deal for one of those 1B.

I think I'd lean towards Marcum being the guy I'd want to move, as I see both Cecil and Morrow starting to surge ahead of him on the depth chart, but Marcum with still the better rep at this point.

85bluejay - Saturday, August 14 2010 @ 02:00 PM EDT (#220746) #

Fielder - I don't think the Jays will be dealing with a Scott Boras client - Also, I don't like his body type and a long term

contract - with boras there is no discount, it's maximum money all the time.

With Gonzalez, it will cost too much young talent - if the Jays are interested then do what smart organisations are

doing - wait until he hits FA - The value for young, inexpensive talent has gone way up

DaveB - Saturday, August 14 2010 @ 02:50 PM EDT (#220752) #
I'd rather be patient with the young pitching depth for another year and see if Lind can make the transition to 1B. You never know  with pitchers who might get injured, perhaps seriously, invariably as we've seen this year you need a sixth of seventh guy to bring up from the minors. You might also find the next closer from this group. Depth in pitching and catching prospects are great assets but there's no hurry. Depending on how things go next season you could be in position to put together a nice package involving a young pitcher and a young catcher for a stud at 3B,  or 1B if Lind proves to be poor there.
