Brad Glenn homered twice while Henderson Alvarez got hammered, again. It all resulted in a 1 win night on the farm with the top two affiliates taking the night off.

Las Vegas - Scheduled Off Day

New Hampshire at Richmond - Postponed

Dunedin 7 at Daytona 8

Jesus Merchan hit a bases clearing 2 out double in the second and Ryan Goins hit another bases loaded double to score two in the third, followed by an Anthony Gose sac fly to put the D-Jays up 6-1. It wouldn't last. Henderson Alvarez, continuing a prolonged stretch of poor play, gave up a single, double and homer in that order in the bottom half of the third to cut things to 6-4. Things would remain this way until the 7th when a Mark Sobolewski solo homer made the score 7-4. In the bottom half of the inning Alvarez allowed 3 of the first 4 runners he faced to reach before he was lifted; all of them would cross to tie the game. A single, sac bunt, groundout and wild pitch the next inning and that was all she wrote. Concepcion Rodriguez, making his FSL debut for the Jays, singled twice; Yan Gomes reached twice with a single and double, Ryan Goins also had two hits with a double and a walk, while Sobolewski hit safely 3 times including his dinger. Gose was 1-3 with a sac fly and a CS; he is 16 for 50 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers, 2 walks and 2 steals (4 CS) with Dunedin. Alvarez went 6.1, walked 2 and struck out none, while giving up 8 hits and 7 runs (6 earned). Needless to say it was not a good effort. In his last 10 games (50.2 innings) he has an era over 6 and has given up 72 hits and 15 walks against 34 strikeouts.

Lansing 10 at Dayton 3

Lansing scored 4 in the 6th and 5 in the 9th for good measure as pretty much everyone got involved as the team pounded out 17 hits. Jake Marisnick and Kevin Ahrens were the only Lugnuts without multiple hits; Marisnick went 0fer and Ahrens doubled and scored. Jon Del Campo and Justin Jackson singled twice, Brad Glenn homered twice and drove in 3, K.C. Hobson and Michael Crouse had singles and a double and triple, respectively (Crouse also walked twice and stole a base), while Kenny Wilson and Sean Ochinko each had 3 hits, with Wilson notching a double. Egan Smith got the start for Lansing and was servicable, giving up 3 runs in 5.2, with 3 walks, 3 k's and 5 hits.

Brooklyn 5 at Auburn 2

This one was a close affair until the 7th when Brooklyn scored 5 to take a 4 run lead over Auburn. Misual Diaz spun a sparkling 5 innings, allowing 4 hits and whiffing 4 without allowing a run. Shawn Griffith and Juan Hernandez were not quite as good, combining to give up 5 runs. On the offensive side of the ledger, Carlos Perez, DHing, had 2 singles and a walk in his 4 plate appearances, while Oli Dominguez had a single and a double; Jack Murphy singled twice. Marcus Knecht had a double and three whiffs, while Markus Brisker pinch hit and was 0-2.

GCL Jays 0 at GCL Tigers 2 (Game 1)

GCL Tigers 5 at GCL Jays 4 (Game 2)

Pierce Rankin had 2 hits in the first game while Aaron Sanchez pitched 3 scoreless innings, though he gave up 2 hits and 3 walks to go with his 4 K's. The GCL Jays showed a little more life in the second game but were behind 5-0 before doing all their scoring in the 8th. Art Charles was the only GCL Jay to reach safely more than once with a single and a double; he drove in 2. Canadian Nick Purdy continued his strong play allowing 6 baserunners and 1 run in 4 innings, though he only struck out 1.

DSL Jays 5 at DSL Mets 6

The Orioles and Marlins extended their PDCs with Norfolk and New Orleans, respectively.  Charlotte is still a possibility for the Jays since they haven't yet extended their PDC with the White Sox.

That's two 1st Star Awards on consecutive nights for Glenn. I don't recall any other player accomplishing that feat this season.

That is disappointing. I wonder how these negotiations work. Are the Jays allowed to talk to teams under contract? My guess is not. But why would Norfolk (and others) sign now after being able to see what's out there.

Btw, here is an article on the Rangers-Oklahoma-Round Rock story:
http://newsok.com/redhawks-rangers-likely-to-split/article/3482801

It does mention the White Sox as an alternative for Oklahoma but not the Jays. I wonder why the stadium situation in Charlotte matters for the White Sox. You figure that's really more for the owners of the AAA team.

and here is another one (mentioning the Jays)

This is just my speculation, but the ballpark in Charlotte (or, more accurately, in Fort Mill, South Carolina) is 20 years old and its facilities may not be on par with newer AAA stadiums.  If a new ballpark in Charlotte is unlikely in the near future, the White Sox may choose to leave now and sign up with a team that already has a modern stadium.

Seeing Gose having soooo many CS I hope the Jays sign Tim Raines Sr. or Rickey Henderson on as a baserunning coach for the minors next year.

As mentioned, it's 20 years old, which means it dates from the days when out-of-the-way suburban parks were the going trend. The stadium isn't even in Charlotte - it's 15 miles away, across the state line in Fort Mill, SC.

Interesting, I don't recall the Jays looking to move away from Syracuse back in '83 but back then I didn't pay close attention to the minors either.

Lets hope a few options stay out there for this winter.

15th Rounder Zak Adams is now in the fold

http://twitter.com/jimcallisBA

A total of six high upside prep arms are now signed, great work by AA and company.

Great news on Adams.

I get why the current stadium situation isn't great for the owners but why would that matter to the parent club. As long as the training facilities are ok, they could care less about the attendance.

whatever the drawback on the stadium, if the Jays can get into it and out of Vegas, that's a win.

Cashman isn't a stadium with a good rep either.

Checking the Jays officially signed list I see...

Top 10 rounds unsigned: McGuire (1), Griffin Murphy (2), Samuel Dyson (4), Richard Thon (5), Logan Ehlers (8), Tyler Shreve (10)

So that would be 6 unsigned out of 16. There are reports of Thon signing (a month ago) but being held off the official list so far.
sam - Friday, August 13 2010 @ 04:41 PM EDT (#220700) #

I think you can check off Murphy and Thon from that list.  You'd bet your house that McGuire and Dyson would sign so that leaves Ehlers and Shreve?  No bad.  Hopefully the Jays make a run at Bryant, but considering the lack of talk on that front that seems highly unlikely.  Depending on how he's pitched this summer, someone like Nick Vander Tuig would be a good signing.  I think it's fair to say that if anyone that the Jays have drafted and who their scouts generally agree have potential to be a major league player, the Jays will sign.

I just listened to the Jays' portion of BA's podcast on the signing deadline.  Really not worth the listen.  They think the Jays might be one of the big spenders and smiply restate that the Jays have likely signed Thon and Murphy and that McGuire will sign just over slot.  They don't really say anything else.

MatO - Friday, August 13 2010 @ 04:45 PM EDT (#220702) #

I think Murphy is pretty much confirmed as well, just not officially.  I've read rumours that Dyson will sign but not strong ones like Murphy.  With Ehlers, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.  Shreve I haven't read a word about.  He doesn't have much leverage.  His scholarship to play QB at Utah has been revoked so I don't think he has anywhere to play football.  I guess JC to play baseball is an option.  Maybe he should take the Jay Schroeder/Chris Weinke route and play baseball and if that doesn't work out then try football again (BTW Shreve was charged with assaulting his HS coach which scared off a lot of teams).

John Northey - Friday, August 13 2010 @ 05:39 PM EDT (#220706) #
I thought Murphy had been unofficially signed as well but couldn't find the reference online so didn't mention it (my memory isn't always the best). If the Jays can pull off signing all of their guys from the first 9 rounds that would be great.
Moe - Friday, August 13 2010 @ 07:50 PM EDT (#220708) #
This is something one of the "draft experts" said (don't remember which one, just copied the list)

Signable late round picks

Yes:
Cotto (12)
Opitz (11)
Mims (9)

No:
Marlowe (21)
Painton (13)
Melvin Garcia (33)
David Whitehead (36)
Chad Green (37)
Nicholas Vander Tuig (39)

1 of
Thon (5)
Bryant (18)

2 of
Taylor (7)
Ehlers (8)
Adams (15)

So far, that looks about right. One of the "No" has signed (Garcia) but there was talk about him just being badly advised before the draft so he probably was a "Yes" to begin with. Only one of the three "Yes" missing (Cotto). Lets hope that one gets done and one other as well (Ehlers, Bryant, Tuig). Bryant is probably the longest shot. Not sure what the asking price on Tuig is.

someone ask Law on twitter about McGuire signing and he said "almost certainly, don't worry about it" - and added probably late Monday before we hear.

In regards to how the Player Development Contracts work, I believe that the MLB and the minor league organizations can negotiate during the season.  I don't believe that they can officially sign an agreement until after the seasons however.  For instance at the AAA level, both the International and PCL leagues have to have the championship rounds completed prior to announcing new agreements.  If the two organizations that are currently tied together agree to extend their agreement, they can announce that at any time.  That is why the only news you are hearing currently is in regards to extensions.

There can be times where a MLB and a minor league organization can be left without an affiliation at a level.  For instance if a minor league city is undesirable to all MLB organizaions or perhaps the citites available may not be interersted in a certain MLB organizaion.  In that case, the MLB and minor league organizaion are forced together by MLB.  I believe that is how Vegas and Toronot actually ended up married to each other two years ago.
