The man wearing number one for the Las Vegas 51's highlighted a perfect 5-0 night on the farm.  Three of the affiliates reached double digits and one just missed while another nearly made it to 20!  No problems with the bats on this night!

Las Vegas 19 Nashville 8

Las Vegas, NV - The 51's tuned out the Sounds with nine runs in the sixth inning to snap a 5-5 tie.

Batting - Mike McCoy was 5-for-5 with a walk as he hit a home run, drove in three runs and scored four times.  That's pretty decent production from the leadoff spot!  Jason Lane had four hits with two doubles and two RBI.  Jarrett Hoffpauir had two doubles, a home run, a walk and three RBI.  Brad Emaus went deep among his two hits, drew a walk and knocked home a pair.  Mike Jacobs also sent one over the fence among his two safeties and drove in four runs.    Raul Chavez singled, walked, hit by a pitch and drove in two runs.  Aaron Matthews doubled, singled and drove in three.  Dan Perales singled and walked.  Brian Jeroloman did not get a hit but he did draw a walk.  That puts the BJBBM to 74, five of those coming with the 51's.

Running - You don't need to steal when you put up 19 runs!

Pitching - Shawn Hill pitched one inning and gave up three runs on four hits but all three outs were on the ground.  Merkin Valdez walked one and gave up two hits but struck out a pair in three innings.  Josh Roenicke was charged with a blown save but gained the win to improve to 7-0.  He pitched two innings and gave up two runs on three hits (including a homer) and two walks and struck out one.   Lefty Jesse Carlson gave up two runs on three hits over one inning.  Steven Register gave up an unearned run on two hits over two innings but he struck out two.

Defence - Emaus threw one away at third.  Matthews threw out former Jay Ray Olmedo at second from left field.  The 51's also managed to turn a pair of deuces.

New Hampshire 11 Richmond 6

Richmond, VA - The Fisher Cats started fast with a four-run first but the Giants affiliate evened it up after two.  New Hampshire took the lead for good with a three-run third and ended the night with by spreading four runs evenly over the last two innings.

Batting - David Cooper, Shawn Bowman and Adeiny Hechavarria all went deep in this one with Bowman reaching the 20-homer plateau.  Cooper had two hits, a walk and three RBI.  Adam Loewen had a double, single and a walk and Eric Thames clubbed two doubles and drove in a run.  Jonathan Diaz had a two-run double and a walk.  Hechavarria drew a walk to go along with his homer.  "Davey/Onix" Concepion Rodriguez had a single and Darin Mastroianni had a walk so every Fisher Cat reached base once.

Running - No Fisher Cat was daring enough to attempt a steal in this one.

Pitching - Randy Boone gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings to get the "W".  He threw a wild pitch but he struck out a pair and recorded 10 groundball outs.  Trystan Magnuson allowed just one hit over two shutout frames.  His strikeout and groundout total were three apiece.  Ronald Uviedo gave up a run on two hits and a walk and struck out a man over his lone inning of work.

Defence - Cooper made a throwing error at first.  Jaspe and Boone were victimized by a stolen base.  A pair of 4-6-3 double plays were turned.

Brevard County @ Dunedin - Postponed due to rain.

Lansing 12 Great Lakes 3

Midland, MI - The Lugnuts trailed 2-1 after three but they bunched their runs in innings four through six that saw a five-run eruption in the fourth and added two more in the eighth to complete the romp.

Batting - Eric Eiland was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run batted in and four runs scored.  Ryan Schimpf had a double and two singles along with three RBI, including a sacrifice fly.  Balbino Fuenmayor had two singles, a walk and two RBI while Michael Crouse also had a two-hit night and a walk.  Kevin Ahrens had two hits while Jake Marisnick and Sean Ochinko each had a double and RBI. Justin Jackson added a run-scoring single.  Brad Glenn was hitless in five at-bats but he did score a run.  Kevin Nolan was 0-for-1 after replacing Ahrens at third.

Running - Eiland stole a base but Crouse was thrown out trying to do so.

Pitching - Matt Fields earned the victory by lasting six innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on eight hits.  He struck out five, walked none and split his 10 outs evenly between the ground and the air.  In his first Midwest League appearance, Daniel Barnes gave up two hits but struck out a batter over one scoreless inning.  Lefty Aaron Loup gave up a run on two hits but struck out  a pair in two innings of work.  He also uncorked a wild pitch.

Defence - Crouse booted one in right field.  Ochinko was 2-for-3 in nailing base stealers with all attempts coming with Fields on the mound.  One double play was converted.

Auburn 4 Brooklyn 3

Auburn, NY - The Doubledays beat the Cyclones as badly as wrestlers used to beat this ham 'n' egger.  Okay, not really.   Auburn took leads of 2-0 and 3-2 only to see the Cyclones battle back each time.  The D-Days would prevail with the winning run after hearing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame".

Batting - Gustavo Pierre had a 3-for-3 night at the dish, all singles and he laid down a sac bunt.  The big hits came from Marcus Knecht and Steven McQuail as they each homered.  Knecht drove in a pair and also had a walk.  McQuail's dinger in the seventh was the winning run.  Jonathan Jones had a double and a plunk.  Carlos Perez had an RBI single while Lance Durham and Matt Nuzzo also singled.  Markus Brisker drew a walk but Oliver Dominguez did not reach base on four trips to the dish.

Running - Brisker stole a base but Nuzzo was thrown out trying to expand his single into a double.

Pitching - Jesse Hernandez gave up a pair of runs over five innings on four hits and two walks.  He struck out five and his groundball-flyball total was 8-1.  Josh Outman gave up a hit but struck out a batter and coerced a couple of groundouts in his scoreless frame.  Tyler Powell blew the save but got the win by giving up a run on two hits and a walk over one inning.  Drew Permison struck out three over two scoreless innings and allowed just one runner to reach on a walk to get the save.

Defence - The Cyclones were 2-for-2 in stolen bases against Perez with Hernandez and Outman on the mound respectively.  One DP was turned.

GCL Blue Jays 9 GCL Braves 8

Dunedin, FL - The Braves scored six runs in the third inning to grab a 6-2 lead but the Jays tied it with a four-run fourth and scored once in the fifth and twice in the seventh to hang on for the win.

Batting - Chris Hawkins and Melvin Garcia had three hits apiece, including a triple each.  Garcia had a three RBI day but Dalton Pompey was the top slugger by clearing the fence twice and driving in three runs.  Ronald Melendez and Daniel Arcila also had two hits and an RBI each.  Gari Pena collected a hit, drew a walk and was hit by a pitch while K.C. Hobson doubled and Pierce Rankin singled.  Bryson Namba wore an 0-for-5 collar.

Running - The Jays played station to station ball in this one.

Pitching - Noah Syndergaard lasted just 2 1/3 innings and gave up five runs, three of them earned.  He gave up four hits and struck out a man.  Four of his six outs in play were on the ground.  Chris Enourata gave up a solo homer among his five hits in 2 2/3 innings and committed a pair of balks.  However, his K-BB mark was 3-0 and he induced four groundouts.   Alesone Escalante pitched three hitless innings but he gave up a run by walking a man, plunking two others and committing a balk.  He did strike out a pair of hitters to earn the win.  Bryan Longpre gave up a solo homer but got the final three outs for the save.

Defence - Namba
booted one at third but took part in an 8-3-5 double play started by Melendez.  The Braves were successful in their lone steal attempt on the Enourato-Rankin battery.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3.  Eric Eiland, Lansing

2.  Jarrett Hoffpauir, Las Vegas

Not all of the news is good.  In case you missed it, the Rochester Red Wings recently renewed their Player Development Contract with the Minnesota Twins for another two years so it appears the Jays are doomed for another two years in the Pacific Coast League.  :(

Is there any proof that being the Pacific Coast league really hurts your prospects?  It is what it is... a hitters league.. you just need to adjust player's stats to account for that fact.  The only concern I really have is the distance... would be better to have the AAA team at least in the same time zone as the big team so guys aren't thrown off by the time change.

Eiland is still performing poorly at the plate and is a very, very long way from regaining prospect status, but something interesting may be happening. In 291 AB's he has 67 K's (23%) . S ince the start of the second half of the season, he's had 106 AB's,with only 19 K's (18%), combined with 23 walks.
Mike Green - Wednesday, August 11 2010 @ 11:28 AM EDT (#220476) #
Right.  Subjectively, Eiland looks like he should have medium-range power at least and he runs very well.  He'll be turning 22 next month.  I hope that they start him in Dunedin to begin 2011 despite the unimpressive numbers.

There are other PLC teams that might be better than LV and could/should become available. I have reported this before: there were multiple stories about the Rangers leaving Oklahoma to go to Round Rock. Location-wise that's actually worse but the environment is better because Oklahoma plays in a more neutral devision. And I would not be surprised if Norfolk could be enticed to break up with the Orioles. They have no history together and the team has been doing badly.

Ducey - Wednesday, August 11 2010 @ 12:46 PM EDT (#220483) #

Yeah, Eiland is .255/.392/.303 since the all star break.  Not bad.

Ahrens is .278/.344/.451 in that same time, with most of the improvement in late July and August.   He is hitting lefties real well (.329/.413/.518) in Lansing and on the road.  So there are some positive there.  Presumably he will go to Dunedin next year for the third time.

Nice to see some glimmers of hope from these guys.  Too bad Jackson and Cooper are still stuck in the mud.

Norfolk would be a good one that is for sure.

They have been with Baltimore since 2007. In 2007 attendance was 463k (same as last year with the Mets). Since then, in order, it has been 433k, 387k, and this year 314,964 so far projected at 378k.

W-L record is 54-64 this year, 71-71 last, 64-78, 69-74, then with Mets. Appears to be a similar thing to the Jays/Syracuse situation where the affiliate - namely dropping attendance (slowly but certainly) and a 500 or worse team.

Norfolk is over 4 1/2 hours from Baltimore (driving) and has the Washington ML team in-between so they are not a natural combination. This is what the Jays should chase imo. Potential issues are that Baltimore can argue their AA and A+ teams are good (both are around 550 winning percentage) although nothing else in that system is good. The Jays AA team is better, and A+ is a bit worse (586 and 522 win%) but the other full season A team is just over 500 and the overall minor league total is 4 games sub-500 with a competitive ML team as well. If Vegas can play 6 games over 500 the rest of the way (16-10) they will be over 500 on the season which would be a selling point.

Misual Diaz is coming to Auburn to replace Hutchison.  Diaz is a 20 year old with a 2.52 ERA in the GCL.

BA's best tools covers high A leagues today.  The Blue Jays have several awards:

Best power: Mike McDade

Fastest baserunner: Anthony Gose

Best change-up: Henderson Alvarez

Best defensive catcher: Travis d'Arnaud

Best defensive outfielder: Anthony Gose

Most exciting player: Anthony Gose

The Gose trade doubled their awards.

DaveB - Wednesday, August 11 2010 @ 03:07 PM EDT (#220497) #
Interesting news there Gerry especially in regards to Gose. Last year in the Sally he was named the fastest and best base-runner, best defensive outfielder, and most exciting player. I believe those were determined by a vote of managers. One stat caught my eye today. Gose is third in the FSL in total bases with 188, only three behind league leader McDade and already eight more than he had last year in the Sally, in 45 fewer ABs. At both levels he was/is among the league's youngest players. Obviously he is still raw and must improve his OBP and base-stealing fundamentals, but everything we've learned about Gose since the trade only seems to justify why it was made. I'll be very suprised if he isn't among BA's top 50 ML prospects next year.

Terrific MLU, #2JB. If not for the horrid error of missing the Rudner note, this might be the perfect report.

You've set the bar high. Now, you gotta clear it again!

DaveB,

I definitely like your enthusiasm for Gose.  I think there is a lot to like and I myself did a statistics vs age run-down of him in the comments here after the trade.  But, Top 50 in all of baseball? That is a -huge- stretch.  If he were putting up an .800 OPS and running without getting caught so much, he woul definitely be a top 50.  But right now, he isn't.  Right now he might only be an outside top 100.  I like Gose, and I think he might eventually be able to make it on to BA's top 100, but it won't be this year.

Charlotte hasn't renewed their agreement with the White Sox yet, and that one might work a bit better for Toronto due to the number of direct flights between Toronto and Charlotte (Charlotte is a hub for U.S. Airways).  With Norfolk, you'd have to go to Richmond an hour away to catch a direct flight.

Norfolk has a nicer ballpark while Charlotte wants a new one (one that's actually in North Carolina), so there are pros and cons with each potential affiliate.

Today's transactions, now that they're official.  Gerry has already reported a couple of these:

K.C. Hobson promoted to Lansing from GCL Blue Jays.
Jose Vargas moved back to GCL from Dunedin.
Misual Diaz promoted to Auburn from GCL Blue Jays.
Andrew Hutchison promoted to Lansing from Auburn.
Lance Broadway to the 7-Day DL with a left wrist strain (aw shucks).
Jesus Merchan moved down to Dunedin from Las Vegas.

It's always interesting to see the manager and coaches for the visitng team.  Wally Backman is the manager of the Cyclones, but no blow-ups are expected.  The hitting coach is Benny DiStefano, some of the older bauxites might remember Benny and the Mets.  Pitching coach is Rick Tomlin.

The broadcaster for the Cyclones is Warner Fusselle who was the voice of TWIB for a while after Mel Allen and he tells me he used to do hockey highlight packages for the NHL before they moved the job to Toronto.

Looks like LV is short a few starters with Broadway out and Mills and Rzep pitching for the Jays this week.

This is the stuff that makes it hard for the AAA team to be good. The best guys get called up and unless the MLB team pays for some solid career minor leaguers, the team is going to be below .500.

In Auburn tonight the Doubledays are facing Angel Cuan, a Tim Collins sized lefty from Panama, with a 5-0 record and a 1.66 ERA.  Cuan reportedly played for Panama in the WBC.

Cuan features a plus curveball and he has used it to get 4 K's in the first 2 innings.  Jonathan Jones, who hardly ever K's, led off the game with a three pitch strikeout.  Gustavo Pierre, who K's more than Jones, followed with a 4 pitch walk.  Carlos Perez hit a bullet to first and Pierre was doubled off.

Webb has a 94-95 mph fastball but he is leaving it in the middle of the plate too often.  Brooklyn have 6 hits and lead 2-0.

Have a few questions as I haven't followed the Jays minor leagues much this summer. I notice Hobson is listed as a 1B on the team roster, has he already been given up on in the OF before reaching full season ball? Even Lind stayed there until the Majors. Is Hobson that bad of an athlete? Second question is on Nicholas Purdy in the GCL. Only 20 years old, great component ratios, so he seems at first glance like a prospect worth watching. I don't see him listed as a Jays draft pick and this is his first exposure to pro ball. Where did he come from? Prospect or soft-tossing organizational filler? Final question-is there any hope for the health of Kyle Ginley? Really thought he was a potential closer.

Cuan came into the fifth having only allowed one hit.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Lance Durham hit a grand slam to right centre.

Looks like Hobson is considered a 1B at this point.  Purdy is a local kid signed as a FA.  He was previously drafted in the late rounds in 07 and 08.  Not drafted in 09.  Pitched a bit in the Intercounty League.  Ginley is into his 3rd year of injuries.  It doesn't look good.

Thanks for the comment on my no doubt optimistic perspective on Gose. On reflection that's a good cautionary note about the next BA rankings and I agree with your point that Gose needs some better plate and SB numbers. The Top 100 list is volatile and at times, to me, inexplicable. In BA's defence it's very difficult to weigh dominant HS position players and hitters against young pros who might seem to be scuffling against older competition. I find the rankings too heavily influenced by draft slot. For example there's very little difference in the minor pro batting stats of Gose and Rays 2008 No. 1 overall pick, SS Tim Beckham, who was ranked No. 67 overall this year. They're about the same age (Beckham eight months older) and have played in the same league two years in row, so it's pretty good comparison. They both play positions where defense is a priority, but where a good bat or fast feet can give you some lineup leverage. Beckham was slightly better at the plate last year, Gose slightly better this year. There was a huge difference last year in their defense and base-running. Gose was named the Sally's top defensive outfielder, Beckham committed 43 errors. Gose stole 76 bases, Beckham was 13 for 23.  The difference in terms of rankings is that Beckham was a HS stud, a former BA Youth Player of the Year and No. 1 overall pick, thereby almost guaranteeing a spot somewhere in the top 100 (he entered at No. 28 in 2009). The projections on Gose were originally tempered by the uncertainty of whether he was a pitcher or an outfielder, with most teams naturally more interested in him as mid to high 90s LHP than a speedy CF with line drives in his bat and a gun for arm. They're both toolsy guys with perhaps a similar likelihood of becoming good Major Leaguers, but I think it's fair to say that Gose has stood out a bit more thanks to a couple of his plus tools (speed and arm). The difference in their status as ranked prospects is a product of increasingly irrelevant HS performance.

There are plenty of other examples of prospect rankings not reflecting playing reality but for the sake of toolsy CF prospect comparisons there's 2009 third overall pick Donavan Tate. He entered the BA rankings this year at No. 53. He's a great athlete, a football player with plus home run potential based on HS performance. Despite being drafted one year later than Gose he is only one month younger. He's playing Rookie ball for the Padres and turning in a stellar .227/.343/.352 with 40 strikeouts in 88  ABs. Small sample, yes. Maybe meaningless. Better prospect than Gose? Not yet, IMO. Obviously HS evaluation is part of the process but I'm not sure how you can accurately compare any high school position player (especially one who was probably a year or more older than his opponents in his Senior year), to a guy the same age playing against older pros and making a significant impact.

On the other h
and there is CF Mike Trout, the No. 85 prospect who just turned 19 a few days ago. He was promoted last month to the Angels High A team after hitting .362 and leading the Midwest League batting race by about 40 points. He'd also stolen 45/54 bases. He's not exactly struggling in High A either (.290/.366/.440) and is just starting to get hot (.378 this month). I guess it all adds up to long way of stating the obvious: that baseball is by far the hardest sport in which to project future success for a young athlete, and that prospect rankings are subjective, often wildly inaccurate and thus give old amateurs like myself who just played a lot of ball and love it ample reason to hold contrary views.

But ye
ah, for sure Gose has to get on base more often and figure out how to read pitchers. As much as I like the kind of player he is and might become, he's certainly not there yet, nor even dominating in any offensive capacity that typifies the few can't-miss guys that come along. He's doing enough right now to make me think he is on the right track and well worth the price it took to get him.

Kelekin - Thursday, August 12 2010 @ 05:17 AM EDT (#220532) #
Thanks for the great reply Dave.  It's absolutely true.  We put stock into how these people rank players, yet there is more than what we see and what they see.  Look at a guy like Mastroianni.  He has had insane stolen base numbers and a generally solid average and OBP throughout his entire career, but because he isn't 18 or 19, he isn't considered a legitimately interesting player.

The top 100 to me becomes a potential projection list, and not as much a combination of potential with performance as it should be in this day and age.
