The affiliates evidently could not stomach the loss of compadre Brett Wallace, as no one without a "League" in their name could muster a W. Apologies for brevity, but some of us have to get away for the Simcoe Long Weekend. Woooo!
Even though it happened last, timewise, this game summed up the night for the affiliates, as the Wallace-less 51s mustered very little of anything. Jarrett Hoffpauir had 2 hits (plus a BB), Aaron Matthews had 2 hits (including a 2B) and Brett Wallace Replacement Jason Lane had 2 doubles. Lance Broadway gave up more runs and hits than innings pitched (6) and walked more than he whiffed, while Zach Jackson was little better in relief. Brad Emaus singled and walked.
New Hampshire 1 at Trenton 3
Eric Thames homered and doubled to account for New Hampshire's only run and 2 of their 5 hits. Needless to say the rest of the offense didn't do much: Loewen, Cooper and Hechavarria all singled. Hech also stole a base and contributed to two double plays. Randy Boone started and was effective though not superlative, he went 7.2, allowing 9 hits, 3 runs all earned, walking 2 and striking out 3. 12 of his 19 outs in play came on the ground. After cutting it to 2-1 in the 4th the Fisher Cats never really threatened.
Fort Myers 3 at Dunedin 2 (10 innings)
This one stung a bit, though the result was not undeserved as Dunedin got outhit 11-3. Fort Myers scored in the first on a leadoff triple, a run the D-Jays got back in the 3rd as Justin McClanahan homered. Fort Myers went ahead in the 4th, Dunedin got it back in the 7th on a Michael McDade solo home run. Fort Myers took the lead for good in the 10th on a leadoff single, followed by a sacrifice, wild pitch and single. Things would have been worse had Brian Van Kirk not cut down a second run at the plate. Dunedin got their first two runners on in the bottom half of the inning but an unsuccessful sacrifice followed by a GIDP ended the game.
Van Kirk had the only other hit, a single, while reclamation project Shawn Hill was effective, going six while striking out 5 against no walks. He allowed 2 runs; the third was give up by Ross Buckwalter who took the loss.
Great Lakes 13 at Lansing 1
Ryan Tepera, Scott Gracey, and Aaron Loup all got hammered, allowing at least 3 run. Brian Slover was the only success story, sort of, allowing just 1 run in his 3 innings. Sean Ochinko had two hits, as did Markus Brisker, while Kevin Ahrens walked and singled. The Lugnuts had 9 hits, all singled, and walked twice. Moving on.
Batavia 8 at Auburn 3
Another ugly result. Auburn was up briefly after the first, but it was all Batavia from there on, as runs 2 and 3 came in the bottom of the 9th. Gustavo Pierre was the only player with more than 1 hit, he had 2 of Auburn's 5 hits, including a triple. Andy Fermin doubled, while Jon Jones walked twice, as did Joseph Bowen. Casey Lawrence had a so-so outing, going 4.2 innings and allowing 4 hits and 4 runs, two earned. He walked one and struck out 6.
GCL Jays 4 at GCL Braves 3
Jake Marisnick had two hits, including a homer, while Mike Crouse one upped him with 3 hits including a dinger. Those were both solo shots, but K.C. Hobson one upped them by hitting a 2-run round tripper. Noah Syndergaard took the hill and allowed 4 baserunners - 2 walks and 2 hits - while striking out none and allowing an unearned run.
