Brad Glenn made the front page of Minor League Baseball tonight, as a result of hitting for the cycle. The rest of the evening featured 4 wins and 1 loss.

Apologies for the short MLU tonight, but as they say, brevity is the soul of Minor League Updates. I think.

Portland 3 at Las Vegas 5

It was " '09 Jays hurlers night" on the mound in Las Vegas.  Lefty Marc Rzepczynski allowed one run on three hits (including a homer), two walks and hit a man over 6 2/3 innings.  Lefty Jesse Carlson wasn't nearly as effective.  He stranded one of Rzepczynski's runners but he gave up two runs on four hits (including a dinger) over 1 1/3 innings.  Jeremy Accardo allowed an inherited run to score but he picked up the save by allowing one hit and striking out a batter over one scoreless frame.

Everyone had a hit save for Jarrett Hoffpauir and Manny Mayorson.  J.P. Arencibia clubbed his 29th........double of the year to match the same number in the home run column.  He got some love on JaysVision (a.k.a. the Jumbotron, the video board, the big TV type thing) during Monday night's game as he was profiled as a future Jay between innings.  Dan Perales and Brett Wallace each had two hits, including a double.  Wallace, Adam Calderone and Jason Lane each drove in a run.  Of note, former Jays Nick Green and Kyle Phillips had a hit for Portland while Josh Barfield, whose dad Jesse was at Monday's game at the Rogers Centre, belted a homer.

Harrisburg 3 at New Hampshire 8

B.J. LaMura was amazing, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk in 6 innings while striking out 6. The bullpen allowed a few runs, but the offense more than compensated. Hech-a-Skech led the way, going 3-5 with a HR and 2 singles while David Cooper and Eric Thames each drove in 3 - Cooper on a single, double and walk, and Thames on a single and a triple.

Clinton 5 at Lansing 9

Dunedin - scheduled day off

Lansing imitated their big brothers in the T Dot with a 9-5 win. Brad Glenn had a huge day, with a single, double, triple, and..... yep, you guessed it, a home run. Glenn's cycle included 3 runs and 3 ribs and he even tacked on a walk to accomplish the rare "Rickey Henderson Cycle". (I totally just made that up based on the first player to come to mind who seems likely to have done it, maybe some intrepid Bauxite can check to see if he actually did!)

A.J. Jimenez also had a good day at the plate - he drove in four on a single and a double. Egan Smith got the start and allowed 4 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings.

Jamestown 11 at Auburn 8

A slugfest in Auburn resulted in a loss for the Doubledays, largely thanks to a poor outing from Daniel Webb (4 IP, 6 ER). The offense made it close, though I'm not really sure how - they only amassed five hits to score their eight runs. Gustavo Pierre hit a homer, and Andy Fermin doubled and walked.

GCL Phillies 1 at GCL Blue Jays 4

This was a team effort from the Baby Jays' pitching staff. Starter Misual Diaz pitched a solid five innings, and four relievers combined to shut out the Baby Phillies for the rest of the game. Carlos Ramirez and Michael Crouse hit homers, while Art Charles doubled twice and walked.

DSL Jays - scheduled day off

Three Stars!
3.
Adeiny Hechavarria - 2 singles, HR
2. B.J. LaMura - 6 IP, 2 baserunners, 6 Ks, 0 R
1. Brad Glenn - cycle, walk

  • Hitters and Pitchers of the week are up at milb.com. Congrats to the lone Blue Jay winner Mark Sobolewski, hitter of the week in the Florida State League.
  • The main article of the PCL Notes column focuses on J.P. Arencibia. JPA says that his success this year is a result of an improvement in his timing, which he has worked extensively on with coach and former minor league Jay Chad Mottola. I found it interesting that Arencibia didn't make mention of his improved vision. He also notes his focus on defense and becoming a complete player.

Hech now hitting .310 with a .779 OPS. I know there`s not a lot of numbers to go on but his peripherals(low walks, low K`s, decent contact ability, decent pop) looks exactly the same as fellow Cuban Alexie Ramirez but with slightly less homerun power and more speed on the bases. We could have a fine player on our hands if he turns into that kind of a player

1), Teammates gave Adeiny Hechavarria the silent treatment after the 21-year-old phenom rips his first Double-A home run. This was classic. Adeiny didn’t really know what was going on and raised his palms in confusion after walking down the steps.

“I was like, ‘What are you guys doing? I just hit my first home run,” he said through interpreter Shawn Bowman.

Shawn Bowman, the pride of British Columbia, is also linguistically talented and speaks Spanish fluently enough to translate for A-Hech?  That's a cool nugget of information.

By the way, I must happily admit that I was totally wrong to question the Jays decision to promote Hechavarria from Dunedin.  His numbers in High A were sub-Mendoza, and I assumed that he should follow the classic rules -- conquer each level before promotion.  But the Jays had clearly seen enough of Hechavarria's hitting ability to be confident that he could handle AA pitching, and so far they seem to be completely correct.  To be doing what Hech is doing in AA -- at the age of 21 -- is a very encouraging sign for the future.

slowly I'm trying to get used to reminding myself before i spout off about what the team is doing wrong that the odds are very long that the pros know better than i do about things like that.

I admit i have a long legacy - even this year - of saying "I don't understand why X is still in AA" or whatever but I'm trying to remember to say "I don't get it" rather than "that is a screw up"

One concern with Hech is he's been brutal vs RHP so far... 203/241/299.... still small sample size though.

I agree on that WillRain. And sadly, just because if we were in charge we would move a player quicker, it doesn't make us right or them right, since there's nothing proven either way.  I think it's frustrating from our perspective because we sit here and look at box scores and see these players crank the ball for so many days but in truth we aren't development wizards and it's too easy to criticize those that are supposed to be.

And neat fact about Bowman.

As expected, Kellen Sweeney has officially signed per BA and the Blue Jays draft site.

Off topic: has anyone on the board purchased MiLB.tv? How are the quality of the broadcasts? Is the general user experience as good as MLB.tv? How broad is the selection of games?

I'm thinking of picking it up with the end of season deal ($20 for the rest of the year) and would like more info. Thanks in advance.

Baseball America has a detailed list of minor league affiliations and their expiry dates.

If the Jays wanted to get back to the International League their chances look slim.  Five teams have their contrcats expire in 2010 although with Buffalo and the Mets re-upping last week that is down to four.  I don't see either Pawtucket or Norfolk changing teams as the AAA team is close to the major league affiliate.  That leaves Syracuse and Rochester.  I doubt if anyone in Syracuse wants the Jays to return but I don't know how strong the Rochester/Twins relationship is.

In the PCL there are 13 agreements expiring.

The following are in-state or local relationships that are unlikely to change: Colorado Springs; Fresno; Omaha; Reno: Round Rock; Sacramento; and Tacoma.  That leaves six, five if you exclude Las Vegas.

Albuquerque/ Dodgers

Nashville/Brewers

New Orleans/Marlins

Oklahoma/Rangers

Portland/Padres (The Portland team is moving, likely to somewhere near San Diego)

It doesn't look like the Jays have many options.  The New Orleans Marlins one might be up for grabs but I am not sure how much better New Orleans would be than Las Vegas.

Lugnut Fan - Tuesday, July 27 2010 @ 06:05 PM EDT (#219266) #

The PDC's for Auburn and Lansing are up at the end of this season in addition to Vegas.  I can't speak for Auburn, but I am concerned that the relationship between the Lugnuts and Blue Jays may end at the end of this year.  I have no facts to base this on outisde of some things that I have observed at the ball park, namely in the gift shop.  Typically, half of the merchandise in the store has something on it about Lansing being the class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.  Currently, there is nothing in the store that states anything about the relationship.  If you want a Lansing Lugnut shirt currently, it will only be a Lansing Lugnut shirt with no mention of the affiliation.

The owners of the Lansing Lugnuts used to also own the Charleston Alley Cats and when the owners sold the Charleston franchise and the Lugnuts didn't renew with the Cubs, it was a natural fit both from a geographic and a working relationship for the Jays and the Lugnuts to partner up.  The owners here had a very strong working relationship with the old regime.  I am wondering if the new regime would rather switch the affiliation back to the Sally league simply because the weather is so unpredictable here in April and May.

Like I said, I have no insight into this, but just an observation from a fan that has been waiting to hear the terms of the new PDC.......

There was some talk that the Rangers will go to Round Rock since Nolan Ryan owns them now. This would free up Oklahoma. While being harder to reach from Toronto, the ballpark is more pitcher friendly than LV and so are some of the other ones in the division.

maybe hech is benefiting from a decent hitting coach.........

The tie between Norfolk and the Orioles is not that strong (only since 2007) and the team is bad this year. The Jays success and commitment to player development can only help them getting out of Vegas. And if they have to buy a new scoreboard or something, they have the money to do so.

Kyle Drabek threw 6 shutout innings tonight.  The F-Cats lead 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh.  Eric Thames has hit his 20th.

Robbie Alomar was just on the Jays broadcast. A couple notes

1. He says the Jays signed someone from his hometown, couldn't quite make out the name, but from what I could understand it didn't sound like he was someone the Jays drafted.
2. Tabler asked Robbie if coaching at the minor league level was something he'd be interested in. Robbie said he would love to coach with the Jays, specifically helping Latin players make the adjustment to professional baseball in a new country.
3. Robbie was also in the broadcast booth when Yunel Escobar made that peach of play to get the force at second. Robbie says Escobar reminds him a lot of Omar Visquel in the field and Cal Ripken at the plate. Tabler tried pressing him into a Hanley Ramirez comparison, but Robbie seemed to slightly disagree.

It was nice listening to Robbie talk about the game and his years with the Jays. He talked about Cito as a hitting coach and patterns in the game. I think it would be a good idea for the Jays to bring Robbie into the fold somehow next year. The Jays seem to be making a concerted effort to sign IFAs. You'd have to imagine that someone like Robbie could only benefit the development of some of our young Latin prospects, no? I'd say bring Robbie to spring training and hire him to be a roving infield instructor and see where it goes from there.
