Travis Snider had another monster of a game while Kyle Drabek didn't do so bad himself either. The whole thing shook out in a 3-3 night, and there were a couple of interesting performances.

Tacoma 8 at Las Vegas 4

I don't know if its the quality of the pitchers, the altitude, the ballpark, the league or whatever, but the 51s literally cannot get any decent pitching. Today was no different as Luis Perez put the hometown side out of the game by the 4th when he gave up a 4-spot to Tacoma; the Rainiers would also tack on two more against Perez in the 6th for good measure. Perez gave up 10 hits in his 6 innings, all 6 runs were earned, and he walked 2 and struck out 4. If you are looking for positives, 11 of his 13 outs in play were on the ground. Steven Register picked him up and allowed 2 runs in his 3 innings, although he did whiff 4. Meanwhile the 51's bats couldnt really get it going against former major leaguer Luke French (who can't possibly be worse than Ryan Rowland-Smith, but I digress.) JP Arencibia had only 1 hit, a solitary single, which is pretty disappointing, but a couple of other noteworthy players succeeded. Brett Wallace singled and doubled in 4 at bats, and Manny Mayorson had two doubles and a single in his five plate appearances. Brad the Emausculator also chipped in with 2 singles while Adam Calderone had a double and a walk.

New Hampshire 11 at New Britain 10 (10 innings)

This is what we call a barn burner folks. Kyle Drabek started for the Cats and went a strong seven while the offense didn't have any problems. Travis Snider cashed in a Darin Mastroianni double in the first to give the Fisher Cats the lead, and drove in runs two and three with a single in the third. New Britain managed an RBI groundout to make the score 3-1 after three, but a David Cooper two-run bomb next inning gave the Cats a 4-run cushion. In the fifth Travis was at it again, homering for RBI number 4, 5, and 6. New Britain scored another dinky run which the Fisher Cats got back in the 7th (even though Snider whiffed with a runner on third and one out) making it 9-3. Adeiny Hecchavarria doubled in Eric Thames in the top of the 8th for the 7-run cushion, which would prove to be vital. After Drabek was lifted following the seventh the relief corps came in and didn't quite fare as well. BJ LaMura allowed the first four Tacoma batters to reach on 3 walks and a single. Trystan Magnuson came in to shut the door and struck out the side...  just sandwiched around a first batter walk to bring in the second run of the inning, a bases clearing double and two last singles, leaving the score at 10-9. Bubbie Buzachero came in to close it down and allowed a one out triple to score on a subsequent groundout making it 10-10.

Things would stay this way for a while, exactly til the top of the 10th to be specific. Eric Thames and David Cooper both walked with one out before Adeiny reached on an error that drove in what would prove to be the winning run. Buzachero had a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning and that was the ballgame.

Kyle Drabek had another strong start, going seven strong and allowing only 4 hits and two walks. He struck out 6 and all 3 of his runs were earned. He was pretty stingy though, as 10 of 14 outs came on the ground, and three of the hits were singles, while the runs scored on these three sequences: walk, steal, single, groundout; double, groundout, groundout; single, walk, wild pitch, groundout. Travis Snider was, as mentioned, the star, going 2-4 with a homer and 6 RBI. I think maybe he should be in Toronto instead of Mike McCoy. Just going out on a limb here. Surprisingly few other Fisher Cats had good games. Darin Mastroianni reached base safey four times in six plate appearances, doubling twice, singling, walking and scoring 3 while driving in 2. David Cooper made his only hit count with the two-run homer and also walked. Brian Jeroloman walked twice but didn't hit, Adeiny singled and doubled in five at bats, Thames doubled and walked and scored twice, Hecchavarria's line is now .277/.319/.386 in 20 games, which I would deem reasonable so far in his first year, especially given his struggles in high-A.

Dunedin 3 at Bradenton 5

Well if they are going to start naming cities after the Minor League Update crew and giving them teams I would have thought Gerry would have first crack, but apparently not. Good hustle I guess, kid. This game was thoroughly uninteresting in terms of performances. The 1 through 8 Dunedin hitters all had a single hit, while Ryan Page gave up 5 runs, 2 earned (3 errors will do that) in 6 innings, walking 4, whiffing 6 and giving up 6 hits. He too got a ton of ground balls, 9 of 11 outs this way. Welinton Ramirez, Travis d'Arnaud and Mike McDade had the only extra base hits, all doubles, while Brian van Kirk and Chris Hopkins both singled and walked. Mark Sobolewski singled and walked twice, so huzzah for him.

Kane County 5 at Lansing 7

Dave Sever started for the Lugnuts and promptly gave up 3 runs in the first, after which he settled down nicely. It helps when your team picks you up, as Lansing scored two runs each in the first and second before tacking on extras in the third, fifth and eigth. Sean Ochinko, AJ Jiminez, and Justin Jackson all had two hits, with one of Jiminez's being a double, and with one of Jackson's leading to a stolen base. Ryan Schimpf did them one (or several I suppose) better though, picking up 8 total bases on two doubles and a homer. Sever's final line was 5 IP 6 H 3 ER 0 BB 5 K, which is perfectly respectable. The pen was fine other than Steve Turnbull, who gave up two late runs.

Auburn 4 at State College 8

I think I was beaten to the State College jokes so I will spare everyone. Jonathan Jones, Marcus Knecht and Lance Durham all hit twice, with Jones walking and Knecht doubling. Oliver Dominguez tripled and walked, while Carlos Perez singled in 4 at bats while DHing. Sam Strickland gave up 4 runs, 2 earned, in his five innings, allowing 8 hits and a walk against two k's, and the pen was poor, giving up the rest.

GCL Yankees 4 at GCL Jays 5

Wooooo we beat the Yankees! Pierce Rankin continued his hot hitting with two pokes in four at bats, Bryson Namba homered and drove in two, and Carlos Ramirez walked twice and singled and tripled. Aaron Sanchez allowed 3 runs, none earned, in his two innings, with two hits, a walk and 3 k's, while Nicholas Purdy allowed 1 run in 5.1 with 4 hits, 2 walks and 7 k's.

It's not primarily the quality of the pitching in Las Vegas.  The major issue is BABIP: 856.2 innings, 1089 hits, 97 homers, 630Ks.  Some of it is environment (the hitters have a team BABIP of .330), and some of it is probably sub-par defence.  The pitchers have walked too many as a group, but that will happen when your defence won't turn batted balls into outs with any kind of regularity.

And yes, Mastroianni is having a very nice season for New Hampshire.  He'd make a better bench OFer than DeWayne Wise, in my view.

MLB Bonus Baby is reporting that the on Monday the Jays will sign 3B Kellen Sweeney for $600,000.
Kelekin - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 01:30 PM EDT (#219013) #
Hopefully this means we will get to see Sweeney get in on some games this year.

Syndergaard went 3 IP today, allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts and no runs allowed.

For those hoping for Toronto's AAA affiliate to be back in the IL next year, the options just got a little slimmer.  Buffalo just re-up'ed with the Mets for another two years.

The announcement is here:
http://buffalo.bisons.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100721&content_id=12471682&vkey=pr_t422&fext=.jsp&sid=t422

That brings the potential IL affiliate options down to five:  Charlotte (White Sox), Norfolk (Orioles), Pawtucket (Red Sox), Rochester (Twins) and Syracuse (Nationals), most with either affiliation histories or location proximity going for them.  Unless we can swing a deal with a closer PCL city (Nashville, maybe), it looks like we could be back for another two years in Sin City.

given where I live, Nashivlle would be SWEET!

it'd be too bad for you guys that i don't have a great scout's eye, but I would definately try to weasel an interview or something on the rare occasions i could afford to get up there.

Vegas seems to be skewed towards offense even more than usual this year - to a ridiculous level.

Some quick simple evidence:

  • Encarnacion - .800ish ops in MLB, well over 1.000ops in AAA
  • Hoffpauir & McCoy - .500ish ops in MLB, over .900ops in AAA
  • Purcey - 1.09 whip in MLB, 1.55whip in AAA
  • Litsch - 1.39whip in MLB, 1.68whip in AAA
  • Lewis - 1.26whip in MLB, 1.45whip in AAA
  • Rzep - 1.76whip in MLB, 1.69whip in AAA
  • Roenicke - 1.74whip in MLB, 1.26whip in AAA

acknowledging the superficiality and extreme small sample size of this analysis, I think this evidence is still pretty striking. Roenicke is the only pitcher who has actually been worse in MLB this year than he has been in Vegas - which is pretty crazy.  Meanwhile, the likes of Hoff and McCoy have put up all-star numbers in AAA, but were absolutely useless in MLB, while an average-ish MLB hitter like EE absolutely crushed AAA like it was A-ball.

I know vegas is always pretty extreme, but it seems even more pronounced this year.  And I know I'm starting to mentally subtract a good .150ish ops points for the hitters down there to try and estimate a "true" AAA level for them.

On the flipside, it makes Mills' current numbers correlate quite well with his elite numbers from lower levels in previous years. I really think Mills should be getting a looksee in one role or another right now. I think he might be doing a helluva lot better this year than we might think.

Woooooo, I guessed that number on Sweeney approximately!
Mike Green - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 03:25 PM EDT (#219023) #
It's interesting to imagine the development path for a pitcher like Syndergaard.  He's 17 in the GCL.  He'll probably be (good health assumed) 18 in the NYPL, 19/20 in A-ball, 21 in double A and 22 in triple A.  The extra year when a pitcher does not have to be added to the 40 man changes the dynamics quite a bit.
Gerry - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 03:26 PM EDT (#219024) #

The Jays had eleven picks in the first five rounds.  Sweeney signing would make it 6 signs, and we have heard that Dickie Thon Jr will sign, that will make it seven.

The four remaining include Deck McGuire; Griffin Murphy and Justin Nicolino (both HS players taken in round 2); and Sam Dyson, a college pitcher who played in the college world series so he probably won't pitch again this year.

I assume McGuire and Dyson will sign, if the Jays get Murphy and Nicolino to sign they will be in good shape.

The Jays have not signed their 7th through 13th round selections, all high school players.

MatO - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 03:40 PM EDT (#219025) #

According to reports that I've found online, Murphy and Nicolino have agreed to sign.  One report has Murphy agreeing to an $800,000 bonus which would be above slot for the 61st pick I would think.  Maybe the commissioner's office is holding things up.

metafour - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 03:41 PM EDT (#219026) #
Griffin Murphy has already agreed to a deal.  Just a matter of MLB approving; which according to Seiler is starting to happen.  Seiler predicts that we'll officially announce Murphy, Sweeney, and Shane Opitz (who has also agreed) next week.

As always, the official link for Blue Jay Draft Pick Signings is...
http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/team/draft.jsp?c_id=tor

The site is far behind as it only has official signings and in July just 20th round pick Art Charles has been signed & approved while many others are signed but not approved. Hopefully that'll clear up soon. The nice thing is to look back and see how it went since 2004 for signed/unsigned.
PeterG - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 04:03 PM EDT (#219030) #
Sean Nolin has also been signed.
MatO - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 04:14 PM EDT (#219031) #
#8 Logan Ehlers - looks like he might go down to the deadline.  Andrew Tinnish  saw him pitch recently (struck out 17) but the Jays have yet to meet his demands.
PeterG - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 04:28 PM EDT (#219032) #
Jays knew what his demands were when they drafted him. Perhaps they are going up as he has been outstanding this summer. I'd be surprised if he was allowed to get away.
Gerry - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 07:10 PM EDT (#219037) #
John Lott, on twitter, quotes AA as saying not much is going on with signing McGuire right now.  However he is optimistic but AA says that talks really get serious closer to the deadline when some other guys sign and agents get a read on the market.
Kelekin - Friday, July 23 2010 @ 07:32 PM EDT (#219038) #
Yeah, unfortunate that there's no word on our 7th to 10th rounders yet.  Also hoping Cotto signs.  It is nice that 10 of our 11 top picks will sign, but it'll be even nicer if we get some of the remaining top talent.

I really hope the jays are able to sign 18th rounder Kristopher Bryant.  I heard he has some monster power potential.
