One and Five: What a Wednesday on the farm, seventeen innings but no cigar for Dunedin. A Lugnut “W” and “Ls” for the GCL Jays, New Hampshire and Las Vegas. Our boys were outhit 62-46 and it showed.
It was the normal 104 degree summer evening in front of just 2,165 weeknight fans at Cashman Field. The 51s sent four hurlers to the mound including closer Merkin Valdez , the only 51s pitcher to keep Tacoma from scoring. Robert Ray (3-5) pitched 6.1 innings but got tagged with 9 hits and 7 runs and suffered the loss.
Las Vegas spread out 8 hits to get their 5 runs during their never lead game. Jarrett Hoffpauir(2 for 4) had 2 doubles and an RBI. The other multi-hit performance was turned in by Brett Wallace(2 for 4) with two singles and an RBI. Aaron Mathews (1 for 3) smacked an RBI triple while and Danny Perales (1 for 4) Adam Calderone (1 for 4) added a single and and RBI each. Callix Crabbe(1 for 3) managed as well.
At 86 degrees, the near capacity 7,644 home fans were disappointed in Manachester with Fisher Cat starter Jo Jo Reyes (1-1) losing with 6 innings of 4 run, 6 hit ball. Danny Farquhar pitched no hit ball for a couple of innings and Adrian Martin gave up the last Portland run allowing 3 hits in 1 IP. Luis Sanchez and David Cooper didn’t help the cause each committing fielding errors.
The Fisher Cats could only scare up a single run on 7 hits for the evening. Travis Snider was 1 for 4, a HR producing New Hampshire’s only run. Multi- hit games for David Cooper(2 for 4) and Matt Liuzza(2 for 4) with Liuzza batting 2 Doubles and Cooper adding one. Pride of BC Shawn Bowman added a single for good measure, but no cigar.
What can you say about 17 innings and 4 hours and 39 minutes of work on a muggy Florida afternoon and still now cigar. The D Jays sent 5 pitchers to the mound and Boomer Potts(3-1) picked up the L giving up a triple and then balking home what turned out to be the winning run. Never mind the one run given up by D Jay pitching in the previous 16 innings.
Dunedin batters weren’t much help in the marathon at Dunedin Stadium. Mustering a lackluster 5 hits, Dunedin hitting was lead by Jon Talley with two hits including an RBI Double. Welinton Ramierez(1 for 6), Travis d’Arnaud(1 for 5) and Brad McElroy(1 for 7) all punched Doubles.
The Lugnuts earned the only Jays’ organization win on Wednesday with a 10 hit 2 run show in front of 2,219 Lansing fans under partly cloudy skies at Cooley Law Schoool Stadium. Winning pitcher Egan Smith (4-0), spaced out 4 hits in 6 scoreless innings. Nester Molina (S,3) closed out the Lugnut effort with 2 innings of scoreless and hitless work. Lansing managed a pickoff and a double play as well.
At the plate, the Lugnuts were lead by Sean Ochinko (1-2, 2RBI) who batted in Lansing’s only runs on the eveing. Multi hit performances were turned in by Kenny Wilson (2-3, 2B), Brad Glenn (3 for 4), and A.J Jimenez (2 for 4). The Kevin’s (Ahrens and Nolan) each added a single.
As exciting as it was, Lansing was the only win in the minor league organization, so be glad.
Auburn dropped one at Jamestown mustering 12 hits, but managing only 4 runs. Daniel Webb got the loss allowing 5 runs on 7 hits in 3 innings of work. Subsequent DoubleDay pitchers shut down Jamestown with just 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 innngs. But the damage was done. Gustavo Pierre committed his 13th error on a pickoff attempt.
Multiple hit performances were turned in by Jonathan Jones (2 for 4, 1 2B), Marcus Knecht (2 for 5), John Roberts (2 for 5), Andy Fermin(2 for 4), Joseph Bowen (2 for 4).
Even the newest Jays could not buy a win today Wednesday. Outhit 6 to 4, the Jays pitching staff gave up three runs early giving Jo Vargas (0-2) the loss. Escalante and Mella added 3 total innings of no run, no hit ball, but the Jays couldn’t bring on the bats in the later innings.
Carlos Ramirez and Michael Crouse turned in the only multi-hit performances (singles), in fact the only hitting performances on the day for the Jays.
