Ok that title makes no sense, but the Rookie League and above affiliates went 2-4 and weren't particularly sharp about it. Eric Thames went 4-4 but lost the first star to a hitter who put up 10 total bases. I'll give you a hint, his name rhymes with Bludelmis Fernandez.

Las Vegas 3 at Fresno 0

JP Arencibia hit his PCL leading 26th home run to start the second inning and that would be all the 51s needed, though they tacked on two more runs for good measure. Brad Mills got the first start coming off the all star break and made it a good one, going six strong innings. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk to go with 3 punchouts, and got sixty percent of his outs in play on the ground. Josh Roenicke, Jesse Carlson and Jeremy Accardo each pitched a scoreless inning in this the parade of ex-Jays pitchers. Aaron Matthews was the only 51 with more than 1 hit, as he singled and doubled, and Mike McCoy, Jarrett Hoffpauir and Brett Wallace all singled and walked batting 1-2-3, while the former two also stole bases.

Binghampton 5 at New Hampshire 1

This one was knotted at zeros through the first five innings before Binghampton got on the board in the 6th with a run and put it away in the 7th with  runs. Reidier Gonzalez was the victim in this one, He was cruising early, allowing only 3 singles in his first five innings. He'd allow two more in the 6th to score a run, but a single, sac bunt, walk and homer, followed by another single, would chase him from the game. Danny Farquhar came in to pick him up but eventually allowed a run scoring double, making Rei's final line 5.1 IP, 8 H (7 1B, 1 HR), 5 ER, 1 BB 2 K. Farquhar was good otherwise though, going 2.2 and whiffing 4 against the double and a walk. The offense, as you may have surmised, was not much better either. as Shawn Bowman reached on an error and scored for the Cats only run. Eric Thames, who accounted for 4 of New Hampshire's 7 hits, is the only batter worth speaking about. (Snider and Hech went hitless, Loewen singled.) Thames' season line is up to .287/.364/.501, with 16 homers and an 8/10 rate stealing (he was caught in this game.)

Dunedin 2 at St. Lucie 4

The D-Jays could muster only 2 runs on 6 singles and went down quietly against St. Lucie. Jon Del Campo had two of the hits and Brian Van Kirk walked and singled, and that was about that. Henderson Alvarez wasn't particularly sharp after being drilled in the futures game Sunday; he went 5 and allowed 6 hits, 3 runs and walked 3, whiffing only 2.

Lansing 4 at Wisconsin 7

The first of two games against the Badger state saw the Lugnuts get knocked around early before mounting a futile comeback in the 6th and 7th (7 inning games because of the double header). Matt Fields didn't escape the third and ended up allowing 6 of the 7 runs on 11 hits, recording only 7 outs, 1 via the strikeout. Matt Wright was perfect in relief though, going 2.2 and striking out 3. Through 40 innings he's K'd 50 batters and allowed 30 hits and 14 walks. Through 150 minor league innings he is now averaging 10.62 K/9, so Tim Collins eat your heart out. (I'm sorry, I just miss him,) Shortstop Kevin Nolan, also trying to make us forget about now ex-Future Blue Jays, doubled twice for the Lugnuts, while Balbino Fuenmayor homered. His OPS is almost up to .675! Chris Hopkins singled and walked twice, and Kenny Wilson, Sean Ochinko, AJ Jiminez, Kevin Ahrens and Justin Jackson all reached base on solitary singles.

Lansing 4 at Wisconsin 2

This outing turned out a little better for Lansing, as they rode a decent start from Egan Smith to the W. Egan got 10 outs on the ground, 2 in the air and 3 via the strikeout in his 5 innings, walking 1 and allowing 2 runs on 6 hits. Steve Turnbull pitched 2 perfect innings for the save, striking out 4 of the 6 batters he faced. The Lugnuts only reached base safely 8 times on 5 hits and 3 walks but made the most of their chances, Kenny Wilson was the big gun, doubling and walking twice while scoring and cashing a run. Justin Jackson tripled and Brad Glenn homered, and Ochinko and Randy Schwartz had the other two hits with Randy getting the third walk.

Tri-City 9 at Auburn 8

Our last game featuring the major affiliates was a bit of a heartbreaker. Auburn scored the first 5 runs and was up 5-0 and 6-1 before things started to fall apart. Andrew Hutchison continued his fine form to start the short season, allowing just one run in his five innings. He gave up only a solitary hit but allowed one of his two walks to cash for the only real blemish. He managed to strike out 6 for good measure and get two thirds of his outs in play on the ground. Juan Fernandez was not as fortunate, however, and got absolutely torched. Tri-City went single-walk-single-double before he recorded his first two outs, but got pulled after allowing another run scoring double. Tri-City tied in up in the 7th, and stormed ahead with 3 runs in the ninth without reaching base safely. Auburn made three straight errors to lead off the inning, two by the pitcher, and four in total in the inning. Auburn got back to back doubles to lead off the 9th but didnt reach base again and that was that.  Every hitter but Gustavo Pierre (who made the error letting in the 3rd run in the 9th) hit safely, with Knecht and Brisker getting doubles, and Yudelmis Hernandez did it three times with a double and two homers, driving in and scoring 3.

Mills' 2010 season line bears an uncanny resemblance to his 2009 line.  He's now had 29 starts in Las Vegas with an ERA just over 4 and peripherals to match (good K and HR rates and a few more walks than you'd like).  He absolutely dominated through double A.  He is the kind of player that I normally like a lot (brainy, excellent performance including K rates, left-handed), but it doesn't look as though he is going to get an opportunity in Toronto.

So apparently Cito asked Don Baylor if he was interested in the Toronto mangerial job next year.  Baylor emphatically replied yes and went on to describe how much he and his wife enjoyed the city.  I think Baylor would be a good manager but at the same time I like the thought of promoting someone within the organization like a Brian Butterfield or Luis Riviera.

Anders,  thanks for the fine post and update.

I can't resist this....Yudelmis Hernandez... At least the first name rivals Callix (as in Crabbe) for one of the best baseball names ever!  And what a night he had at the plate!  Bravolmis Yudelmis!

The Baylor/Gaston idea seems to come from Bob Elliott it seems.

Brad Mills has done absolutely everything that you could ask of a pitcher in the PCL, and he deserves a shot at the major leagues more than almost anyone else in the Jays system.   I was originally convinced that he would get a shot at the starting rotation to replace Tallet, Morrow or an injured pitcher.  But now with Morrow's improvement and the return of Litsch and Zep, there's no room for him in the rotation.  Unless there are injuries, Mills has basically two chances:  1) replacing a Marcum or Cecil when they reach their innings limit in September;  or 2) a slot in the bullpen at some point, maybe replacing someone like Tallet or Janssen or Frasor or a pitcher who is traded at the trading deadline.  I was originally opposed to the bullpen idea, but if that's what it takes to give him a chance, I'd support it now.  At some point the Jays need to see whether Mills can be a major-leaguer.  It would also boost his trade value.

rtcaino - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 12:03 PM EDT (#218532) #

I would be very happy for Mills to get a shot in the bullpen. Especially with his fringy stuff, I think it would be the best opprotunity for him to make a successful trasnsition.

Kelekin - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 12:10 PM EDT (#218533) #
In my start-of-year projections, I thought that while I was a fan of Mills, it's likely he'd have a better career in the bullpen.  Mills can be somewhat likened to Chacin in the sense that he's a lefty with a deceptive delivery, which only works for so long.  I think he'd have a better career in the bullpen with his stuff.  I do think he deserves to be up with us though.
uglyone - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 01:13 PM EDT (#218539) #

The jays used to have this problem all the time - too many good young starters.

There was an easy solution then - stick David Wells,Pat Hentgen, Woody Williams, Kelvim Escobar, Shaun Marcum in the bullpen.

And that same easy solution is here right now.

Litsch and Mills should be the long men in the 'pen right now. To go along with LHP Purcey/Carlson/Lewis/Perez  and RHP Janssen/Roenicke/Accardo/Magnusson in the other bullpen spots.

It's high time we started clearing out the old guys in the 'pen, IMO. Too many quality young(ish) arms with good track records ready to fight over those spots.

China fan - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 01:38 PM EDT (#218542) #
You've listed about 12 names for the bullpen.  Who among them would be your primary choices for the 7 slots in the bullpen?   By the way, I think this debate has been long overdue -- the bullpen needs to be shored up, and Tallet hasn't done it.  Frasor and Downs and Gregg could be gone within weeks or months, either to free agency or trade.  Others in the current bullpen are maybe not good enough.  Who would we choose for the starting 7 in the bullpen, for 2011 and going forward?
China fan - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 01:40 PM EDT (#218543) #
Sorry, you've listed 10 names for the bullpen.  But my point remains:  which 7 are the best for 2011 and beyond?
uglyone - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 01:51 PM EDT (#218545) #

pretty much impossible to call until they actually do it.

I dunno - let them fight it out, and it'll sort itself out.

And feel free to add names like Ray, Stewart, Wojciewchowski, Alvarez, Uviedo, Farina and maybe even Rzep to the mix in the next couple of years.

Just noticed how close Frasor is to joining Downs as a Type A FA. There's added value to a Gregg (currently a much lower Type B) trade if Clarence is told to use Frasor as his closer to enhance his compensation value by earning saves.
bpoz - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 02:29 PM EDT (#218550) #
CF that is a great idea to address the bullpen for 2011.
IMO 2 of RH Janssen, R Ray & J Roenicke. Then LH D Purcey & Jo Jo R (no options left), 1 of J Carlson or R Lewis. The last 2 spots will be new acquisition by AA via trades & FA.
IMO because 2011 will also be considered a building year due to too many young guys in the batting order. My young/learning guys will be T Snider, JPA & our new young 3rd baseman with a high ceiling that AA will acquire in a trade. Due to this youth spring training will not be fair competition, some bullpen spots will be given to guys that have to be protected.
But as the season wears on our pen will be adjusted. IMO at least 4 guys will have the opportunity to fail/succeed as the closer.
Kasi - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 02:32 PM EDT (#218551) #
Well I'd say only 2 of Downs/Frasor/Gregg will be traded. Very unlikely all 3 go. Heck unlikely two go.

But for what I'd think I'd put these names down:

Carlson
Camp
Purcey
Roenicke
Magnusson
One of our minor league starters who isn't going to make the major leagues as a starter. Could be Stewart, could be Mills
Last spot being the one of the Downs/Frasor/Gregg who didn't get traded.

mathesond - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 02:39 PM EDT (#218552) #
Is this the same Don Baylor that refused to join the Jays in playoffs because they picked him up in September (after rosters were set). Even though he was ineligible to play, the team wanted him as 'clubhouse presence'

Nope. BB-ref doesn't have him ever in Toronto. Turns out I'm thinking of Dave Parker. So, unwarranted aspersions against Baylor aside, when were he and his wife in Toronto? Strictly as part of a visiting team?
uglyone - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 02:41 PM EDT (#218553) #

I'd have no problem going the rest of this year and next year with this:

  • CL Gregg
  • LSU Purcey
  • RSU Roenicke
  • LMR Carlson
  • RMR Janssen
  • LLR Mills
  • RLR Litsch
  • XLH: Lewis, Perez, (Rzepcyznski)
  • XRH: Ray, Magnusson, (Stewart)

And I wouldn't even be too panicked if we sold Gregg as well.

I honestly like every one of those arms.

Kasi - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 02:42 PM EDT (#218554) #
Did everyone forget about our most reliable guy Camp? Or is the consensus here is that he's being traded too?
Kasi - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 02:45 PM EDT (#218555) #
Don't see Janssen really having a place on the team. I just don't like his stuff, don't think he misses bats and I don't think that he has a place unless it is in the Tallet garbage time mode guy.

Also not sure if Litsch really would work as a reliever. Relievers usually have smaller arsenals and rely on a plus pitch. I just am not sure that Litsch has that plus pitch. Maybe Litsch has some lefty/righty split I'm not aware of though.

Isn't Baylor known as an absolute DESTROYER of arms?

count me as terrified of the idea. I seem to recall him cosntantly havign among the most abused pitching staffs according to baseball prospectus when i started reading in the 90s. i think this would be a horrible decision.

lexomatic - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 03:17 PM EDT (#218559) #
ok i think those memories come from the Cubs time, maybe not the 90s... but i'm pretty sure he gets blamed for breaking kerry wood. Then Dusty Baker came in and made thigns even worse.

I'm also uncertain why Callix Crabbe is a great baseball name.  Joshua Squatritro, Donald Squibb and Squanto Wilson all have funny names, but are they "great baseball names?"  I suppose Callix Crabbe is unusual and alliterative, but so what.  If he were named Callix Knuckleball, I would understand.

This discussion reminds me of a boy I went to summer camp with, Robbie Dockendorff.  I thought that was the greatest hockey name ever but it doesn't seem to have done him any good.  He's never turned up in the NHL.

I'm excited to watch Yunel tonight.

Jason Frasor working his way into an A in the compensation rankings would most likely mean he would need to accept arbitration. I doubt very much anyone would be giving up their first round pick for him. If the Jays don't want him around and want compensation a B status is what they would hope for.

Former Jays farmhand (and personal favorite) Johermyn Chavez made BaseballAmerica's prospect hot sheet this week.  He has 21 HRs and 44 XBH this year.  (Why didn't we trade Moises Sierra instead!)

Drabek made the sheet as well, and Arencibia made the "in-the-team photo" section.

Here are some quotes from the prospect chat:

Steve K (Chicago): Can you tell me anything about Carlos Perez, catcher from Toronto? Is his defense good enough to stick behind the plate? How far away is he from the majors?

Ben Badler: Probably at least three years away, but a catcher who an hit, control the strike zone, hit maybe 15-20 HRs a year down the road and play good defense? That's one of the best catching prospects in the game. I'll be surprised if Perez doesn't make our top 100 at the end of the year.

Sam (Toronto): I know Jim Callis mentioned the Jays as potentially having a top-ten farm system. Do you agree?

Ben Badler: If they can sign all of their draft picks, they're definitely in the mix.

Good to hear about Carlos Perez.  I was really high on the guy last year and I think it'll be exciting to see him in full-season ball next year.  I think he's a way better prospect than Jimenez (don't shoot me).
92-93 - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 07:19 PM EDT (#218575) #
I disagree. People said the same things about Jose Valverde and Mike Gonzalez last year, and both brought their teams FA compensation as Type As. All it takes is a bad team looking for relief help that doesn't mind losing its 2nd rounder, like Baltimore & Gonzalez, or a contending team like Detroit that doesn't mind losing a late first round pick to bolster its pen. As well, teams that are losing their own Type A might not mind losing their first rounder as they gain another one in addition to a compensation round pick, and teams that have already signed a Type A have incentive to sign another one, because the inherent cost is less to them after already squandering their first pick.

Assuming downs, Gregg, and Frasor are dealt:

closers (either/or until/unless one of them claims it with performance: Roenicke and Purcey

Set up:
Camp and Carlson (I think Carlson will be fine but if not we need to find out)

Middle/long:
Janssen and Mills

Mop-up
Accardo and Tallet

and yes, I know, that's eight names for seven slots but you really only need one mop-up guy.

Excess (for injuries, next year, etc): Lewis, Magnuson, Ray, Litsch (or Zep if Jesse wins out)

Markus Brisker promoted to A (Lansing).

Very speedy but raw outfield in Lansing with Eiland, Brisker, and Wilson.

Tonight, Carlos Perez went 3-3 with a  his 4th triple of the season.  He's also 4-0 stealing bases.  He pretty clearly has better speed than your average catcher, at least at age 19, to go along with the other attributes that Ben Badler noted.

It's hard to treat a player in short-season ball as a club's #1 prospect, but Perez' current developmental level is the only thing holding him back.
TamRa - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 10:25 PM EDT (#218586) #
Well, they only had two healthy outfielders, but I can't fathom why they are so slow to promote any of the NH starting outfield.

That was me who asked Ben Badler those questions. He chose to ignore my questions on whether Vander Tuig or Bryant would sign and my questions on who else the Jays were in on of the remaining IFA, but he did answer another question of mine in the chat which was that he didn't think JPA was a top 100 prospect.

but he did answer another question of mine in the chat which was that he didn't think JPA was a top 100 prospect.

I find that pretty hard to fathom and an example of how our prospects always seem to get short shrift. the only guys we got that anyone really likes are the guys they have to brag on because they bragged on them when they belonged to some other team.

I realize JP isn't exactly five-tool but I also find it pretty damned unlikely that if the Red Sox had a guy who was leading professional baseball in homers - even in the PCL - he would magically be a top 50 prospect.

Kelekin - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 11:37 PM EDT (#218594) #
Sam: Nice. Keep up the questions. =)

WillRain: To be fair, Badler said he was ranking JPA lower than anyone else on the BA staff likely would.  And I 100% agree with you on our AA outfielders.  It drives me insane, and I thought there'd be some movement around the all-star games.  It probably doesn't help that Sierra is injured (as he'd likely take the place of someone at AA) and there is no upwards pressure from the other High-A outfielders.  I really think it's about them winning the AA championship.

Mike Green: Even better.  His 5th triple. ;)
TamRa - Friday, July 16 2010 @ 11:57 PM EDT (#218596) #
McElroy and Van Kirk are 24 - if I was of a mind to promote one of the AA guys they'd be obvious - except they are sucking so hard.

Still, can it really be that hard to pick up some waiver wire guys? you might be right - for that matter, if you are willing to play Crabbe in the outfield let him do that in AA and promote someone.

it might be about winning the championship but i wonder if it's not a line of thinking that says if you are going t5o move a real prospect up, don't do it just to spot for an injury (didn't LaCava say exactly that in the spring?) so they sue filler like Crabbe instead.

but what gets me isn't that Crabbe is filling in - what gets me is that Perales and Calderone were the guys who moved up instead of guys with an actual future.

Kelekin - Saturday, July 17 2010 @ 12:27 AM EDT (#218597) #
I understood Calderone being called up at the time he did if they were thinking "he's old, let's see if he really has any value".  But it is clearly infuriating to hold players back when they have proven dominance.  In Mastroianni's case, it's not even like he's on a hot streak.  He's been solid almost all year, and he's gotten better each month.  And you can't but be impressed his line at the Fisher Cats' home stadium is .345/.443/.466.  There are six players I'd make a case for for promotion from AA alone.

I'm not against being patient with players - Thames spending all year at AA makes sense to me.  But due to the years of JP's college logjams, we have players consistently a year behind standard development if they're not a big name.  So to apply the same philosophy to players who are already behind schedule does not make sense to me.

Joshua - Saturday, July 17 2010 @ 12:28 AM EDT (#218598) #
Jo-Jo Reyes went eight innings and gave up 1 hit. That's pretty impressive, but the guy is 26 years old and in AA so maybe not
TamRa - Saturday, July 17 2010 @ 01:30 AM EDT (#218599) #
Reyes won't be 26 until November, but yeah, 25 is a tic old for AA - not excessively though, especially for a lefty.

Boris (London, ON): With Cardona and Cenas signed, is Toronto close or in the "lead" for any other top IFA prospects other than Heredia?

Ben Badler: I don't think they're done. I don't know who else they're going to sign because they've been linked to several of the top names out there, but I'd be surprised if they didn't land another top player, be it Luis Heredia or someone else. The Jays have deep pockets this year and I'm not expecting it to be any different next year
