The affiliates went 0-5 and were outscored 38-11.

Las Vegas 3 @ Portland 6Boxscore

No Las Vegas batter had more than one hit in the afternoon game. Brian Dopirak had the team’s only home run, which was a solo shot in the fifth inning. The other runs were scored by Brad Emaus and Aaron Mathews. Adam Calderone and Dan Perales picked up the RBIs. Mike McCoy played the last couple of innings in center and picked up an assist, while JP Arencibia and Brett Wallace each went 1-for-4 on the afternoon.

Robert Ray pitched 5.2 innings and gave up two runs. Ray surrendered four hits and allowed one walk. He struck out two batters before turning the ball over to Zach Jackson. Jackson allowed his one inherited runner to score. His day only got worse as Jackson proceeded to give up four of his own runs over 0.2 innings. Merkin Valdez pitched the final 1.2 innings and didn’t allow any further damage.

New Hampshire 4 @ Portland 11 - Boxscore

Randy Boone struggled through 5 innings and wasn’t helped by Adeiny Hechavarria’s first error at Double-A and Shawn Bowman’s impersonation of E5. On 7 hits and 2 walks, Boone surrendered five runs, two unearned, retiring six batters on groundouts against three on fly balls. Vincent Bongiovanni pitched 2 scoreless innings and that was the highlight on the mound. Reclamation project Clint Everts looked every bit the part and allowed 4 runs in a single inning on 3 hits and a pair of walks, while Ronald Uviedo gave up a 2-run homer to the second batter in the bottom of the eighth.

Leadoff hitter Darin Mastroianni was 1-for-4 with a double and two strikeouts. He was followed by Hechavarria who went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a walk. Eric Thames was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Bowman had the only mutli-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. David Cooper was 0-for-1 with 2 walks and an RBI. Travis Snider continued his rehab, but had an off-night at the plate, going 0-for-4 with 2 punch-outs.

Dunedin 4 @ Brevard County 7Boxscore

Ryan Page started and went 4.1 innings without striking out a batter. Page allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. Six of the 10 batters he retired on balls in play came on fly outs. He turned the ball over to Chad Beck, who struck out 5 batters over 1.2 innings. That was the good part of his line. The bad part was the 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. Ross Buckwalter and Daniel DeLucia each pitched a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout.

Travis d’Arnaud was the best at the plate (which isn’t saying a lot). He went 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBIs, which so far in the update sounds like the best batting line on the farm tonight. He scored one of the team’s four runs, as did Tyler Pastornicky, who went 1-for-3 with a walk. John Tolisano, playing in centre, and Mark Sobolewski were each 1-for-4 with a single and a run. Brian van Kirk was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Wellinton Ramirez and Jon Talley were among the D-Jays held without a hit.

Lansing 0 @ Great Lakes 8Boxscore

Three hits and three walks. That’s all the Lugnuts could manage on this day. Kenny Wilson, Ryan Goins and third baseman Justin Jackson picked up the three walks. Wilson, Bradley Glenn and Karim Turkamani each had a single. And that was that.

Ryan Shropshire started and allowed 11 hits over 4.1 innings. He was tagged for 4 runs. He also walked 3 batters and struck out 2. Scott Gracey gave up 4 runs on 7 hits over 2.2 innings. In a near miracle, Matt Wright pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Auburn

Scheduled off-day.

GCL Tigers 6 @ GCL Blue Jays 0Boxscore

The GCL Tigers held the GCL Blue Jays to no runs and two hits. Among the names going hitless were Jake Marisnick, KC Hobson and Bryson Namba. The two singles were picked up by Ronald Melendez and Christopher Hawkins. Misual Diaz surrendered 3 runs on 7 hits over 5 innings. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out four. After three scoreless innings from Daniel Barnes and Mike Kelly, Chris Enourato had a tough time closing the door and gave up 3 runs in 0.2 innings for his second rough outing in a row. Drew Elliott had to enter the game to pick up the last out.

The Jays have signed Gabriel Cenas out of Venezuela for $700,000.  He's a Third baseman sho stands out for his power potential and arm strength.  Anyone have a BA subscription to give us more info?

Here you go (grabbed from the RealGM board):

14. GABRIEL CENAS, 3B
VENEZUELA
B-T: R-R Ht.: 6-1 Wt.: 175
Ceñas, a 16-year-old from Maracaibo, trains with Carlos Rios, who had previously served as the Yankees international scouting director. Ceñas' calling card is his bat, as he shows good feel for putting the barrel to the baseball, though he's still growing into his power. He is a fringe-average runner with a plus arm who has been linked to the Blue Jays for a bonus of around $700,000.

Here is the report from our other recent signee:

3. ADONIS CARDONA, RHP
VENEZUELA
B-T: R-R Ht.: 6-4 Wt.: 180
The top pitcher in Venezuela is Cardona, a powerful righthander with a projectable body and an excellent fastball. Cardona, 16, has a quick arm that delivers fastballs at 88-91 mph, touching 93. He should have at least a plus fastball when he's done filling out and should be able to hit the mid-90s down the road. He also shows some feel for a changeup. Cardona's curveball shows good depth at times, though several scouts have expressed concerns about it and have called it a present below-average pitch. Cardona is still refining his feel for pitching, and his mechanics also give some scouts reservations. Cardona has strong ties to the Blue Jays, who are expected to sign him on Friday for around $2.8 million, which would break Padres righthander Adys Portillo's $2 million record for a Venezuelan pitcher set two years ago.

I really hope the Jays sign Roughned Odor and one of the Dominican outfielders.  Wishful thinking but who knows.

Keith Law is reporting that the Jays are going to sign Dickie Thon Jr.  Considering his father's comments after the draft and his strong committment to Rice this is a GREAT signing for the team, this guy is definitely talented and a huge steal consdiering where he was drafted.

Is this normal to be throwing around millions for 16 yr olds?

If picking highschool pitchers is a crapshoot, man, picking them that young has to be tough.

What do they do with them?  Do they just leave them in Venezuela or do they bring them over right away to play?

Noah - Thursday, July 08 2010 @ 02:17 PM EDT (#218059) #

My guess is that they'll play in instructional leagues for a few years.  I think that's what happened with guys like Balbino and Gustavo Pierre.

The number on Dickie Joe is apparently $1.5m.  That's why it won't be announced until the deadline.

From the sounds of it, Thon is an 18 year old with the tools to be a good shortstop but a long way off.  Given the club's current situation, that is fine.

If you use Kelvim Escobar as an example.  He signed as a 16 year-old in July 1992.  He played in the DSL in 1993, the GCL in 1994, the DSL/Pioneer League in 1995 and then the FSL in 1996 at age 20.

Didn't Keith Law comment that being a member of the Idiot Club, or some such thing, had its rewards- 15% off at participating hotels perhaps?

Seriously, Keith Law is not and was not an idiot.  JP Ricciardi is not and was not a doofus.  Gord Ash is not and was not a buffoon.  There have been some very poor GMs in baseball in the last 15 years, but none have been employed by the Blue Jays.

More info http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors#6314:

ESPN Insider's Keith Law reports that the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms with 5th-round draft pick Dickie Thon for a bonus of around $1.5 million.

Thon was committed to Rice and had top-three rounds potential if he'd indicated he was signable past round one, but instead gets a bonus in line with a top-20 pick.

The Blue Jays have now signed six of their first 10 selections, with first-round pick Deck McGuire, a right-hander out of Georgia Tech, among those that remain unsigned.

Don't mean to continually post, but I keep running into news.  http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=9435

The Blue Jays have signed 16-year-old third baseman Gabriel Ceñas, one of the top prospects out of Venezuela this year, for $700,000.

Ceñas is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound righthanded hitter from Maracaibo who stands out for his bat and arm strength.

Guess there isn't a money problem.

But JP sounded so arrogant.
He never lived in Toronto.
He once admitted that GM's lie.
Don't forget the albatross: the AJ Burnett contract.
He never drafted anyone good.
He used Baseball America as his only scouting resource.
He would only trade and sign for Oakland players.
He wouldn't sign any free agent big contracts.
Did I mention the AJ contract?
He never traded away players for draft picks.
He once called Adam Dunn a clown.
He never gave into James Paxton.
He hired that terrible bafoon John Gibbons.
He didn't trade Carlos Delgado.
He traded away Michael Young.
And who can forget the time he traded for Esteban Loizza?
He always built a terrible bullpen.
The third baseman situation was revolving door.

What else am I forgetting? Oh yes, the 5 year plan!

sam - Thursday, July 08 2010 @ 03:31 PM EDT (#218072) #

Depending on what happens at the deadline, the prospect haul in the next month or two with the draft signing deadline, trade deadline, and international signing period  could be epic.

I know there are certain factors to consider, but generally speaking unless the Jays are completely blown away with offers, I'd much prefer holding onto players like Downs, Frasor, Gonzalez etc. and then receive draft picks.  By most accounts, next years draft will be very good.

Former Heritage High star Shane Opitz has decided to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, his high school coach said Thursday.

Opitz, a Denver Post All-Colorado selection after hitting .592 with three home runs, 31 RBIs and 12 doubles his senior season, was an 11th-round selection by Toronto in last month's draft.

Cecil is the new Jays Win leader at 8.

Easy month kicks in gear  with a series win against the Twins which featured several Jays homerun including an inside-the-park by Bautista.

Easy month continues tomorrow as Boston brings their 4 game losing streak to Rogers Center. There are sporting a depleted lineup and Beltre has only 3 hits in July so far.

am I the only one getting error message when i try to click on box scores at MiLB?

The links from the team pages (the real team pages with links to the current game) work, but the links from the "recap" page ends in an error message.

I noticed the wild and crazy box for the Auburn game too.

I don't get why nobody at milb.com has figured out yet how useful it would be to have one page with each MLB team listed that you could click to get the links to the boxscores of their affiliates at each level without having to go league by league.

you can pick by affiliate: its one of the options in the drag down!

I only discovered that after two years of going league by league, so don't feel too bad! perhaps it is a new option?

Would be useful if they remembered what affiliate you last selected, which would save some time. But progress is sometimes slow.

I find it incomprehensible that teams would allow the commissioner to force them to wait on announcing a signing because it's over slot effectively minimizing development time that first year. it's bad for EVERYONE (the player, the team... the league  doesn't lose anything because most people think the draft is broken anyways.)

enough already.

also. i hope Thon signs

sam - Friday, July 09 2010 @ 11:37 AM EDT (#218097) #

I hope the Jays turn their attention to Kris Bryant now.  I'd imagine they're following Vander Tuig as he progresses after TJ.  Of note, Robbie Aviles who is about to undergo TJ signed for $150,000 I believe.  I wonder if that's what the Jays will use when they talk to Vander Tuig?

Thon has got to be the epitomy of upside.

Thon agreement probably rules out a Bryant signing.  His price tag is supposed to be even bigger than Thon's (around $2 million) and his 18th round draft status likely made his mind up on going to school.

Vander Tuig isn't signing.  That is nothing more than a late-round selection of a big name that is 99% likely headed to school.
sam - Friday, July 09 2010 @ 01:38 PM EDT (#218099) #

I understand what you're saying, but I haven't seen any reports that Bryant is asking for early first round money.  At this point, with this GM and his staff, I don't think you can preclude anything from happening.  I've seen no evidence to suggest that the Jays will be constrained by money when it comes to signing high-celing amateur players.  If Bryant doesn't sign, it won't be because we've signed Thon, it'll be because Bryant wants to college.  I think the same goes for Vander Tuig.  If he pitches well this summer I would imagine the Jays will make a concerted effort to sign him as well.

whiterasta80 - Friday, July 09 2010 @ 02:08 PM EDT (#218101) #

It'd be interesting if we just did away with the whole "letting expensive talent go to school" thing .  Thon might have gone to school and in 3 years been a top 5 guy, but we paid him to ensure he's in our system rather than somebody else's. Hopefully he can live up to the money we paid him because the concept of getting a first rounder in the 7th round is efficient. There's a heck of alot of major leaguers who were drafted, not signed, and drafted again much higher.  Our own Brett Wallace comes to mind.  If we paid him in 2005 we would have had a first rounder 3 years early and could have added another bat in the Halladay trade. Obviously this strategy assumes our scouts are doing their jobs and that we develop talent properly. But we could restock our system quite quickly from just paying guys like Thon and Bryant a little bit more.
