Um, well, kind of. Two affiliates played in completely different Portlands, but got the same result: a win. A couple of rain-outs in Florida meant there were only four games last night.

Las Vegas 7 at Portland 6

Las Vegas scored seven runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, and the bullpen just barely held on to lead the 51s to a win. Sean Henn got the start and went four and a third innings, giving up four runs. Josh Roenicke and Jesse Carlson picked up the slack and got the ball to closer Jeremy Accardo without any more damage done, and Accardo decided to have some fun with the Beavers, letting them come tantalizingly close with a pair of runs in the ninth before slamming the door.

I regret to inform you that J.P. Arencibia did not homer. He did, however, single twice and walk once. Other 51s who had good days at the plate included Jarrett Hoffpauir and Brad Emaus, who both singled and walked twice, and Dan Perales, who doubled and tripled.

New Hampshire 5 at Portland 3

Across the country in the other Portland, Zach Stewart got the start and was quite good. He went seven innings, allowing two runs eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Tim Collins got the ball for a two-inning save, and held the Sea Dogs at bay, allowing three base-runners and striking out four.

The F-Cats' offense was slow and steady, scoring in the 2nd, 4th and 8th to account for their five runs. Adam Loewen and David Cooper, hitting out of the 5-6 spots, did most of the damage, each hitting a single, double and home run and driving in a pair. Loewen also walked, while Darin Mastroianni walked thrice.

Dunedin - postponed

Lake County 3 at Lansing 1

Lansing got off to a good start, with a run in the bottom of the first. They held that lead through five innings thanks to Dave Sever, but one run usually isn't enough, and this game was no exception. Sever tired in the 5th, allowing two doubles and uncorking a wild pitch before being replaced, but he still had a good start, striking out six against two walks in his five and a third.

Ryan Goins had the only day of note offensively, with a single, double, and walk.

Staten Island 11 at Auburn 6

It was a slugfest in Auburn, so the minor league update naturally includes good news for hitters and bad news for pitchers. Carlos Perez led the hitters with a single, double, walk, and three ribbies, and Marcus Knecht did the same thing with only one driven in. Lots of other Doubledays reached base more than once; Gustavo Pierre was the only starting position player who didn't reach once.

Daniel Webb, Juan Hernandez, Zach Anderson and Travis Garrett pitched, and let's not talk about them.

GCL Jays - postponed

Three Stars!
3. Zach Stewart, 7 innings, 2 runs
2. David Cooper, 1B, 2B, HR
1. Adam Loewen, 1B, 2B, HR, BB

Travis Snider has been moved up to New Hampshire ahead of schedule due to bad weather in Florida.

Congratulations to MiLB player/pitcher of the week J P Arencibia and Kyle Drabek for their respective leagues for the week ending July 4th ...,

Soooo, Arencibia has improved his patience at the plate, the biggest knock on him. He has 23 walks this year as opposed to 26 all of last season. 21 home runs, tons of doubles. I know everyone seems to have differing opinions on him as a major leaguer, but could anyone have hoped for a better bounce back season from 'ol JPA?
greenfrog - Tuesday, July 06 2010 @ 08:18 PM EDT (#217984) #
Arencibia has to be one of the most impressive players in the minors this year. He's dramatically improved his offensive numbers - thus far he's added almost 300 points to his OPS from 2009, which is just ridiculous. The fact that he's been able to adjust so successfully over the course of a year bodes well for his major-league career.

Sean Shoffit made his first appearance since being converted to a pitcher tonight in the GCL.  Can't imagine he'll stay at the GCL very long being born in 1985 and all.  But it's nice to see him give it a go, since he had no future on offense.

Loewen is another player who appears to have taken a quantum leap in 2010. His numbers are outstanding, considering his lack of minor-league ABs and the fact that he moved up a level to AA this year. He must have a ton of hitting talent to reinvent himself as a positional prospect this quickly.
Kelekin - Tuesday, July 06 2010 @ 08:29 PM EDT (#217988) #
Greenfrog: He wanted to be a hitter when drafted, but the Orioles told him his stuff was too good.

Another note - Tolisano started in CF tonight.

Arencibia 2 for 2 so far tonight with a 2 run bomb.  This is getting insane, what to do with all star catcher john buck.

Emaus has a weird track record in the minors, alternating very good years with awful ones:

2007 (OPS 614)
2008 (OPS 843)
2009 (OPS 712)
2010 (OPS 876)

Will the real Brad Emaus please stand up?

I think the eye surgery in the off season has accidently given Arencibia super human powers.
TamRa - Wednesday, July 07 2010 @ 12:14 AM EDT (#217995) #
the first taste can be overlooked, IIRC he had some minor injuries in 2009 but the main thing was he had one abysmal month that drug down his overall totals. i think his OPS in...June maybe?...was barely over .500

Meanwhile - anyone notice that in his last 10 games long-suffering Eric Eiland is hitting .393 in his last 10 games with 6 walks against 5 K's - his OPS is 1.086 <Sample size alert!>

Kelekin - Wednesday, July 07 2010 @ 12:35 AM EDT (#217996) #
Yay, Eiland is now on pace to being only partially mediocre!
TamRa - Wednesday, July 07 2010 @ 01:38 AM EDT (#217997) #
well, he's on a pace over the last 10 days (at least) to be a prospect but the sample is too small.

since I've been closely watching how minor leaguers wax and wane over the past few years, i've seen examples where such a hot streak indicated a turned corner - and many more examples where it was just a hot streak and just about the time i begin to get excited about them they go back in the toilet.

WillRain:

Chip Cannon.

That is all.

TamRa - Wednesday, July 07 2010 @ 09:12 AM EDT (#218000) #
yeah yeah yeah.

Are you telling me something I didn't already say?

Frankly though, Chip Cannon is not remotely a good comparison for what's happening here.

Cannon was a college player with significant power who pounded the ball pretty much from day one in the low minors but was exposed at higher levels. He was 23 and in Dunedin when he did his very best work.

Eiland was/is an incredibly raw high scholl player who has experienced great difficulty at lower levels and is still only 21.
Actually, you want to compare eiland to someone, the negative example would be Miguel Negron - the positive example would be Alex Rios.

He's far more likely the former, than the latter, based on what we've seen so far. - but i must point out that Rios  was pretty darn disappointing until his age 21 season too, and that he didn't really bust out statistically until 22

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/R/Alexis-Rios.shtml

But yeah, it's not impossible to start off like Eiland has and still turn out to be somebody important. But it's way too early to think he will.

With Brad Mills off the DL yesterday, the 51's get another starter back today.  Bobby Ray will start in a rare afternoon game, 4pm eastern start time in Portland.

Eiland can be a very lazy player.  There is no doubt that the kid has tremendous athletic talent, but ther are numerous times that he appears to not care.  There were a couple of lack luster plays that BJ Upton made a week or two ago against Arizona where Evan Longoria got in his face.  Eiland has had plenty of similar plays this season.  He can turn it around, but right now, it appears to me that on some nights, he doesn't care to be a baseball player.

Adonis Cardona appears to be signed (or nearly signed).

Thanks WillRain your research and analysis is really appreciated by me since I only follow the progress of Jays prospects. Every once in a while someone will mention a Brett Lawrie or a Mike Trout and then I will look them up.

Eiland should work hard to make it to the Majors for the money or else he may have to work an ordinary job for a lot less. We have some other very raw toolsy OFs but also some close to ready OFs like Loewen/Mastroianni and I expect Sierra & Marisnick to get here at some point and be very good.
trey2589 - Wednesday, July 07 2010 @ 11:52 AM EDT (#218013) #
A couple of games ago, Eiland had a great defensive game, a diving catch, threw a ruuner out coming home and started a double play making the throw to second. Yes, it's much too early but only time will tell.

See, that's where sites like this are invaluable to me because info like that hardly ever comes from stats and even professional scouting reports tend to shy away from words like ";lazy" or "unmotivated"

Thanks for the insight.

trey2589 - Wednesday, July 07 2010 @ 02:49 PM EDT (#218022) #

I don't think that's true, he's a hardworking kid, that's probably one of the reasons he was drafted, and his atheletic ability. It certainly wasn't on his skill as a baseball player

Kelekin - Thursday, July 08 2010 @ 03:54 PM EDT (#218075) #
Trey: So a guy who goes to the games and observes our prospects is less likely to be correct than you, because you are making an assumption on why he was drafted?
