A recently exiled Blue Jay had a big night at the plate and a Jays first round pick earned his first win in high-A ball.  Those are the highlights of a 3-3 night on the farm.

Las Vegas 14 Fresno 3

Fresno, CA - The 51's scored five times each in the first and third innings in this grisly affair on their way to a giant rout of the huge affiliate.  Bonus points for seeing what I just did there!

Batting - The 51's offence released the kraken to the tune of 16 hits.  Edwin Encarnacion had three hits and six runs batted in, including a home run, a double and a walk.  Adam Calderone and Mike McCoy also had three-hit nights with Calderone hitting a triple and McCoy getting a two-bagger.  J.P. Arencibia and Jeremy Reed had two hits and a walk apiece while Brian Dopirak had a double and two walks.  Brad Emaus had two walks but gave way to Luis Figueroa, who added a hit.  Aaron Matthews was 0-for-6 but he did score a run.  The 51's were 9-for-20 with runners in scoring position.

Running - No need to try for stolen bases when you get 16 hits and eight walks.

Pitching - An easy night for lefty Rommie Lewis as he went the required five innings for the victory.  He gave up two first inning runs but that was it as he limited Fresno to three hits and two walks while striking out two.  He also totalled eight outs on the grass.  Lefty Sean Henn went the rest of the way as he gave up a run on three hits but struck out two and walked no one over four innings for the save.  Like Lewis, Henn's groundball/flyball out total was 8-2.

Defence - Encarnacion threw another away for his 5th clank of the year.  Reed threw out a runner from center.  McCoy and Henn started a 6-4-3 and a 1-4-3 double play respectively.

Reading 5 New Hampshire 4

Manchester, NH - One bad inning cost the Fisher Cats as the R-Phillies did all their damage in the third.  New Hampshire had three runs in the fourth and added their last run in the seventh.

Batting - Daniel Perales had the only two-hit night for New Hampshire, including his fifth homer of the year.  David Cooper's lone hit was his 11th bomb of the year, a two-run shot, but he is only batting .219.  Adam Loewen and Jonathan Diaz had doubles and every starter had one hit except for Brian Jeroloman but he did take one for the team and also drew a walk so the BJBBM is up to 47.  However, Jeroloman, Darin Mastroianni and Shawn Bowman struck out two times each to account for 60 percent of New Hampshire's whiffs.

Running - Mastroianni snared his 30th stolen base of 2010.

Pitching - Kyle Drabek struggled for one inning against his former organization.  He gave up five runs on five hits and two walks but he did last seven innings, struck out five and induced 10 groundball outs.  Alan Farina made his second appearance in the Eastern League one to remember as he allowed just one walk over two scoreless innings while striking out five.

Defence - Jeroloman and Drabek could not keep the Phillies running game in check as they were a perfect 3-for-3 in the stolen base department.  Diaz, Manny Mayorson and Cooper teamed up for a 6-4-3 double play.

Dunedin 2 Clearwater 1 (7 Innings)

Dunedin, FL - This game was called with one out in the bottom of the seventh thanks to Mother Nature.  Dunedin scored their runs in the first and third innings while the Phillies affiliate responded with their lone run in the sixth.

Batting - Two runs and two walks proved to be just enough for the D-Jays.  Michael McDade singled home a Tyler Pastornicky walk and Travis d'Arnaud belted one over the fence for his sixth homer of the year.  Brad McElroy was the only other player to get on base with a walk.

Running - Pastornicky stole his 20th base of the year before scoring the game's first run.

Pitching - Chad Jenkins earned his first win in the Florida State League with seven solid innings in which he gave up one run on five hits and a walk while striking out five.  The worms in Dunedin were in constant danger all night as the 2009 first round pick recorded a baker's dozen outs on the ground.

Defence - Of the 13 groundball outs by Jenkins, six came via the double play ball.  Mark Sobolewski started two of the 5-4-3 twin killings with Justin McClanahan and McDade while Pastornicky started a 6-4-3 DP.

Lansing 4 Bowling Green 2

Bowling Green, KY - A two-run ninth lifted the Lugnuts to a win over the Rays affiliate.

Batting - Ryan Goins, Sean Ochinko and Kevin Nolan had two hits apiece.  Ochinko drove in two runs, Nolan drove in one and Goins scored three times and reached base three times with a walk in addition to his two hits.  Kevin Ahrens and Eric Eiland each singled.   Kenny Wilson drew two walks while Ryan Schimpf, Yan Gomes and Brad Glenn each drew a walk so every Lugnut got on base at least once.

Running - Wilson stole his 24th base while Goins grabbed number five.

Pitching - Lefty Egan Smith delivered a quality start by going six innings and allowing two runs on six hits and two walks.  Despite a balk, Smith racked up nine ground ball outs.   Nestor Molina earned the win by allowing one hit and one walk over two shutout innings and all of his outs were on the ground.  Steven Turnbull struck out two in a perfect inning to collect the save.

Defence - Goins, Schimpf and Nolan combined their efforts for a 6-4-3 double play.

Williamsport 4 Auburn 0

Williamsport, PA - Three in the first and one in the fifth was the margin of the victory for the Phillies affiliate.

Batting - The D-Days had nine baserunners but only two were base hits.  Oliver Dominguez had one of the knocks along with three walks (there's a busta rhyme for ya peeps, word!).  Jack Murphy had the other single.  Jonathan Jones drew two bases on balls while Carlos Perez and Matt Nuzzo also worked the count to ball four.  Randy Schwartz had the golden sombrero at the dish while Marcus Brisker, Gustavo Pierre and Steve McQuail were a combined 0-for-10.

Running - Jones stole a base but Dominguez was thrown out trying to do the same.

Pitching - Drew Hutchinson allowed three runs in four innings by yielding four hits and hitting a batter but his K-BB total was 5-0 and he recorded four groundball outs.  The two Zachs finished things up on the hill for Auburn.  Anderson gave up a run over two innings on four hits and two walks along with two K's while Outman bounced back from a rough outing Saturday with two perfect frames that included a strikeout and three groundouts.

Defence - Murphy was charged with a passed ball.  Anderson picked off a runner.  McQuail threw out a runner from right field.

GCL Yankees 6 GCL Blue Jays 1

Dunedin, FL - Two runs in the first was really all the Yankees needed but of course, they rubbed it in some more with four additional runs in the ninth.  The G-Jays lone run came in their last at-bat.

Batting - Jake Marisnick was the lone bright light of the Jays offence with a double, two walks and a run scored.  Andy Fermin, Gari Pena, Garrett Maines and Cody Lassley all had singles.  Pena drove in the lone run.  Ron Melendez and Chris Hawkins each drew a walk.  K.C. Hobson and Carlos Ramirez were each 0-for-4.

Running - Nothing here in terms of stolen bases.

Pitching - Deivy Estrada took the loss as he gave up two runs on four hits (including a homer to Yankees prospect Gary Sanchez) and two walks over four innings.  Daniel Barnes scattered two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 shutout innings while striking out four.  Milciades Santana allowed one hit and struck out one in one scoreless inning and Matthew Morgal turned in a similar effort to Santana's with the only differences being a bases on balls and a wild pitch.  The shutout relief work ended with Bryan Longpre, who surrendered four runs on three hits and two walks (one intentional) in two-thirds of an inning but he also struck out a man.  Lefty Alex Pepe retired the only hitter he faced.

Defence -  Yankees prospect Cito Culver stole a base against Lassley.  Estrada picked off a runner at first.  Marisnick threw out a runner at the plate.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3.  Ryan Goins, Lansing

2.  Chad Jenkins, Dunedin

1.  Edwin Encarnacion, Las Vegas

I have to admit that i'm stunned at the numbers Jake Marisnick is putting up in the GCL.  From all the reports pre-draft, Jake's biggest flaw was his hitting ability.  Scouts said the same thing about Nick Franklin, and Mike Trout.  Lets hope that he can turn out like those guys.

metafour - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 02:48 AM EDT (#217735) #
Remember when 90% on here were flipping out over how highly BA had Marisnick ranked in our system?

His bat was raw; but many here were wrongly comparing him to guys like Eiland and Wilson.  The price tag alone should have given out an obvious hint.  You dont pay a kid $1 million because he compares similarly to a 2nd rounder who signed for underslot (Wilson) or a complete project (Eiland).

Sneeps - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 03:23 AM EDT (#217736) #

He looks like a player, although obviously 30 strong ab's in Rookie Ball is pretty much the worst sample size ever.

What a minor league system we have right now.  If we manage to sign all the remaining picks from the draft, and we add Adonis Cardona, and that 15 year old Heredia kid, to me we'll have the best system in baseball.  Of course all the american publications would call that crazy, but that's mostly because we're in canada and we hardly count.

Kelekin - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 04:30 AM EDT (#217737) #
I think our system is going to be a lot stronger after this draft, but the difference is that a lot of other teams have high ceiling players.  What JP was good at, and what has been proven, is we have a glut of potential MLB average to slightly above-average players.

Their systems get ranked higher because they have big stars.  But you never know how people are going to turn out.  Clearly, our system is better this year than last year, evidenced by the fact that almost all our minor league teams are being competitive.

katman - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 09:12 AM EDT (#217743) #
JP has reportedly said that before our Cuban signing, we already had a short stop of the future, and his name was Tyler Pastornicky. Always great to have 2, and it's a little early to treat on field results as confirmation. But I've got to say, the kid is making the case.

Anyone know why A-Hech was sitting yesterday?  Minor injury?  Or is he getting a breather, maybe so the coaches can rejig his batting a little?
fredlewis3 - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 09:56 AM EDT (#217745) #
A- Hech has been promoted and is headed to Manchester. He is in tonights line up for Fisher Cats.

Any idea why Wallace has had 2 straight days off? Is he injured?
Kasi - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 10:19 AM EDT (#217747) #
Never mind, found the answer in another thread here.

I wonder if EE continues to smoke wouldn't Bautista at third, Lind in LF and EE at DH be a better choice then E5 at 3rd, Lind at DH and Bautista in left/right?

Maldoff - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 10:41 AM EDT (#217750) #
Anyone know why Brad Emaus left the Las Vegas game alst night?
Mike Forbes - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 10:43 AM EDT (#217752) #
I cant help but think that EEs best position may be in rightfield. Obviously he has troubles with his throws to 1st, however, his range has always seemed decent when chasing pop ups. Hey, it could be worth a try.
Kasi - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 10:52 AM EDT (#217754) #
It's possible he could be a better defender there then Lind. Lind is a pretty bad defender after all.

A- Hech has been promoted and is headed to Manchester. He is in tonights line up for Fisher Cats.....   Is this seriously true, or are you pulling our legs?  If this is true, it would be absolutely astonishing.  He's shown no capacity to hit at the A level, let alone AA.
fredlewis3 - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 11:15 AM EDT (#217756) #

Notes: After the game, shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria was promoted to Double-A New Hampshire. Although he struggled at the plate, the Cuban prospect was very adept with the glove and will make his mark with the Fishercats beginning Wednesday. Shortstop Luis Sanchez will be transferred from New Hampshire to take his roster spot with the Blue Jays on Wednesday...Pitcher Kenny Rodriguez was released from the team Monday evening. In three seasons with the Blue Jays organization, the 25-year-old right-hander was 22-20 with a 4.32 ERA in 60 games, including 55 starts. He split three seasons between Dunedin and New Hampshire.

This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs. From Dunedin web site

Wow.  That's amazing.  The only explanation I can imagine is that A-Hech was promised a taste of AA this season, and the Jays were committed to honor the deal, regardless of how he did in Dunedin.   Maybe it was a handshake agreement that accompanied his written contract when he signed?
Denoit - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 11:34 AM EDT (#217758) #
I wonder how much the promotion has to do with them giving Pastornicky regular playing time at SS. At this point in time Pastornicky looks like the better prospect, but Hechevarria has the higher ceiling. It looks like they are taking the sink or swim attitude. Hopefully he learns how to swim...
China fan - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 11:46 AM EDT (#217760) #
Just to put it on the record, as fuel for discussion, here are A-Hech's full numbers in Dunedin in his 161 at-bats:   .193 average, .217 OBP, .292 SLG, .509 OPS, 25 strikeouts, 5 walks, 9 errors.

Clearly he was hammering on the gates of New Hampshire.

sam - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 11:58 AM EDT (#217761) #

Ya this is odd

fredlewis3 - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 12:13 PM EDT (#217763) #
His errors will go up greatly since Cooper is not the first basemen McDade is....should be interesting...hard for other palyers who are producing to watch...
metafour - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 12:20 PM EDT (#217764) #
Hech signed an MLB deal and is already on the 40-man roster.  The obvious answer is that he has a clause in his contract which stipulates that he has to progress up certain levels before certain dates pass.
China fan - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 12:26 PM EDT (#217765) #
His official or unofficial contract might be the correct explanation, as I speculated earlier, but it just seems totally counter-productive.  How does it help the Jays or Hechavarria or anyone?  If he's not ready for AA, he's going to get destroyed by the pitching, he's going to lose confidence, he'll flounder, and it will be a setback to his career.   A fast-tracked promotion path could actually reduce his chances of being a decent major-league shortstop.

Jdog - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 12:32 PM EDT (#217766) #
Yeah I don't like the looks of this at all. I wonder if there is a hitting coach in New Hampshire they think would work best with A-Hech. Other than the contract possibility its the only other explanation i can think of(albeit not a good one).
metafour - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 12:44 PM EDT (#217768) #
Its obviously stupid; but it should be the clear answer.  Why did Hech choose the Jays over the Yankees? Because we offered him a clear path to the majors.  If that was his motivation then it doesn't surprise me at all that he would have his contract include something that says he has to be up in Toronto by a certain point.

Remember that the initial talks not only mentioned an early promotion to AA (which just happened); they also rumored of a September callup to Toronto.  Dont be surprised if Hech is getting dominated at the plate yet still ends up getting a cup of coffee in the big leagues to end this season.

85bluejay - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 12:47 PM EDT (#217769) #

Hech promotion is odd - but given the excellence of the current front office so far, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and critique Hech's performance

in AA. Also, this does alleviate some of the logjam in A-ball and perhaps allows for the promotion of Ryan Goins to Dunedin

tstaddon - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 01:29 PM EDT (#217770) #
I completely agree with Mike Forbes. Encarnacion looks like a prime candidate for a position change. If he could learn to track balls in RF, he'd certainly have the arm for it. Provided he'd be willing to make the move. Seems like the kind of guy who could greatly enhance his value by learning another position. And the Jays can use a guy that play the outfield corners and provide some semblance of a threat off the bench. Time for Arencibia is now. And you'll never be able to dangle John Buck at a higher value.

Elsewhere, trade the bullpen, too. Tim Collins looks great. Trystan Magnusson has a chance. And Alan Farina looks like the kind of arm that could be up here next year.

Don't understand the Hechevarria move myself unless the team believes he'll benefit from a coach that's currently at AA - or they're planning to call him up to AA and only play 4-5 times a week, while teaching him on the side. Slowing things down for him, if you will. Definitely curious. On the bright side, it's wonderful having a system where Pastornicky can slide into SS, Tolisano into 2B, Goins can push to force a promotion and Jackson can try to get back on track at Lansing, playing every day.

Great to see the Chad Jenkins we thought we drafted the past couple of times out. Let's hope he keeps it up. And, though everything else has gone sideways, at least David Cooper has his power this year. Anybody have a read on his BABIP - is it possibly unusually low?

TamRa - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 02:25 PM EDT (#217771) #
I'm not worried about Adeiny's promotion and I'm not looking for some backroom skullduggery to explain it.

First, I trust the development people we have until the prove me wrong; second, there are all sorts of circumstantial factors which MIGHT be in play:

1. the logjam
2. coaching issues (as mentioned above)
3. Dunedin is in a notorious pitcher's league
4. they might think his numbers are the result of bad luck rather than lack of talent
5. they might have a Cuban in the house somewhere at AA (coach, trainer, whatever) that would serve the mentor role that the released Kenny Rodriguez was serving

I have no evidence that there isn't a contract clause as is being speculated but I seriously doubt it - (other than perhaps one that guaranteed him he'd be on the 25 by X date)

Hodgie - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 02:34 PM EDT (#217772) #
Well, based on my (potentially flawed) math Cooper is sporting a shiny .223 BABIP so far this year, .76 lower than the lowest mark of his minor league career to date (set last year). Scraping the bottom of the barrel for positives, his ISO is up to .179 (second best mark of his career) and he has reduced his K%, currently sitting at 16.4%.
uglyone - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 02:55 PM EDT (#217775) #

That's a funny promotion for Hech.

I thought we were going to see Hech DEMOTED to Lansing, with Goins coming up to Dunedin.

tstaddon - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 03:35 PM EDT (#217778) #
That's interesting about Cooper. Granted, it may not get all the way back to the usual .300 (give or take) this year, but it does suggest he'll go on a hot streak at some point. Throwing another 50-70 points on that batting average makes his year a lot better. Heck, in Vegas he might even look promising.

Be interesting to watch Jenkins until season's end. I wonder if shoddier infield defense was hurting him in Lansing. Goins and Schimpf weren't noted for the gloves when drafted.

Gerry - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 05:27 PM EDT (#217780) #
I am not really that worried about Hechavarria in AA.  He has faced similar level of competition before whether in the Cuban League or internationally.  While his BA was low in Dunedin his K rate was not out of line (around 15%) and he hasn't been walking much.  This leads me to conclude he has been hitting the ball just not well enough to get on base, or right at the fielders.  He might as well do that in AA as in High A.

mamboon - Wednesday, June 30 2010 @ 06:17 PM EDT (#217782) #

I think I have seen A-Hech play in 11 or 12 of his 41 games with Dunedin.  Frankly, I wouldn't have moved him up.  But I understand that the Jays brass has more experience than I in managing talent.

I always figured that baseball success come from  1) hitting the ball, 2) running the bases and 3) fielding (catching and throwing).  A-Hech is struggling at #1 and #3.  Seeing him play, you can see his physical prowess.  He is probably one of the very fastest runners in the Toronto organization.  He has a great field presence, despite the 9 errors in 41 games.  His discipline at the plate needs work.  He is quick to jump on early pitches and hit grounders.  He is a serious young man and relates well to his team mates and coaches.

And what happens at New Hampshire with A-Hech coming to town.  Journeyman shortstop Manny Mayorson is moving up to AAA.  His 300+ batting earned him the promotion (he's the all time leader in hits for the Fisher Cats franchise, but he's struggled in the field with 7 errors so far this season).  Manny's a utility player who can perform at short, 3rd or 2nd.  Current regular NH shortstop Diaz is a journeyman utility player as well.  He can move over to second or relieve Bowman at 3rd as well.  He is batting 270ish and his OBP is 400ish.  He's probably the best glove man in the organization and he sports a very good BB/K ratio of 30/18.  And the man with the best baseball name of all times, Callix Crabbe, is a utility player as well.   He is struggling at the plate with a 215 is average, but he is another experienced utilty infielder.  All that being said, and despite A-Hech offensive struggles, New Hampshire still will be a contender.

By the way, Pastornicky has done well at 2nd since A-Hech arrived at Dunedin.  He needs to work on the glove and his throwing for sure, but I think the move to 2nd since A-Hech arrived has been good for Tyler.  He's building an infield utility portfolio and as time goes on it will serve him and his teams well.

The bottom line is that overall I agree with WillRain. Rather than just seeing a logjam, let's realize that there is an opportunity at A to AAA for talent to step up when they are needed. Let's not lament A-Hech moving up. It's not the end of the Toronto organization, nor is it back room contract skullduggary.  Let's see what happens.  Despite recent promotions, New Hampshire is a contender (as is Dunedin) and they have a good group of talented journeyman baseball players.  A-Hech just might thrive there.  But again he may not.

The only gates that should have you hammering on are known for their pearls. But I'm glad that Tyer P. will have a clear lane now, and hey, let's see what happens. Nothing that can't be undone.

Hech tonight for New Hampshire, 1-2 with two, yes TWO, walks.
