Remember what the dormouse said - it's going to be weird out there tonight. Many of the Blue Jays will be facing the familiar baseball icon Roy Halladay for the very first time. Naturally, they'll do it playing as the home team in the opposition's ballpark, before a large crowd of friendly Philly partisans.

At least they'll have momentum after Brandon Morrow threw eight shutout innings at the Cardinals. Blue Jays 5, Cardinals 0. After the big lineup shuffle, Lind homered once, Wells homered twice, Adam Wainwright was chased after four innings, and the Jays avoided a Cardinals sweep.

Now they head to Philadelphia, where they will welcome the visiting Phillies for a three-game series. Litsch, Marcum and Cecil will face Halladay, Hamels and the eternal Jamie Moyer, another pitcher I hoped to see in person this weekend. It's probably the Jays' most difficult interleague assignment, but at least they get to bat last and use the DH. It raises some interesting questions about how much of home field advantage is the last ups, and how much is being able to suit your team to its home park, and how much is just playing in a familiar park with supportive fans.

Really, isn't it just wonderful that the unnecessary location of the G20 summit on Front Street has deprived Toronto of the most anticipated Blue Jays game of 2010. Oh, sure, the Phillies will be here next year, assuming the Jays' formal request is granted. And there's a 60% chance Halladay will pitch in that series, if he's healthy. That's better than a cointoss, though there's still the chance Roy Halladay never pitches in Toronto again. If he does pitch, and even if the Jays' lineup resembles the Halladay-era Jays even less than it does now, with Overbay gone and maybe a few new starting pitchers in the rotation and who knows how many injuries, and even if the Jays aren't over .500, and even if the weather isn't goddamn gorgeous on that day like it's supposed to be tonight, and even if our memories of Doc are a bit mustier, it'll still be an event. It will not make up for what should have taken place tonight.

Halladay, for his part, is on a bit of a cold streak. He still has a 1.51 ERA against National League teams, and he's averaging 7.9 innings per NL start. But he's been hammered in his three interleague starts. The Twins, Red Sox and Yankees have combined to hang a 6.86 ERA and three losses on Doc. Those teams do all have the advantage of being very experienced against Doc. The Jays have a lot of players who will be facing Doc in a competitive game for the first time ever: among their regulars, Wells, Hill, Lind, Bautista, Lewis and Hoffpauir.

They'll see a slightly different Doc than the guy they're used to watching, as Halladay has a new toy in his pitching arsenal. He's throwing 12.6% changeups this year. That's more than twice his previous career high.

I'd like to see the Jays force the issue on the basepaths tonight.

Jesse Litsch gets to take down the Doctor. He's looking to build on the seven shutout innings he threw at the Giants last weekend. Litsch and Halladay, Phillies -230, first pitch 7:05. Enjoy it.

I've been listening & reading what various Jays players have said regarding Halladay since the trade and my

impression is that while they respected what he did on the field & don't dislike him - not too many are upset

& pining for him  - I think this is a result of several factors - Halladay was such a dominant figure on the team

that he overshadowed everyone (think A-Rod in Texas,Griffey in Seattle), despite his dominance he was not one

of the guys or a vocal leader ( just his nature & preparation style) & he had a great/close relationship with GM

Riccardi which meant that Halladay was catered to more than others (perhaps deservedly so). Again, I don't

think his teammates disliked him, but I don't think he was a beloved figure amongst the players as he was

with the fans.

I'm a big supporter of the trade - I was against extending him given his age/wear on his arm/AL east - not saying

he would not be a good pitcher but I prefer financial flexibility and to spend money on younger players.

Just to note I was against the Wells deal also - I'm for spending money acquiring young players (as AA is doing)

and being very selective with regards to long term contracts especially to older players.

I've never said anything about this until today, but Doc's one vulnerability is to the bunt.  It was under-exploited when he was in the AL, except (of course) by the Rays.

Just a little something to feed our heads...

Ah, if only Cito liked to bunt...
John Northey - Friday, June 25 2010 @ 09:58 AM EDT (#217550) #
Wow, forgot just how extreme Cito could be on bunts till I looked up this years figures at B-R.

5 sac bunts by the Jays this year, on pace for 11. Second lowest in the majors is Baltimore at 15 so far. Last year there were 24 by the Jays with Baltimore dead last at 13 (Boston was between them at 19). 23 by TB in 2008 was the low mark. Last time a team had 11 or less (the Jays pace)? 2005 by Texas at 9 (they were 3rd in overall AL scoring that year).
Denoit - Friday, June 25 2010 @ 10:19 AM EDT (#217553) #

How about Brandon Morrow? I think this team has its top of the rotation shaping up for the next few years pretty nicely. I know there have been alot of comparisons to AJ Burnett, but from what I've seen in the last little while Morrow is already a better pitcher. I could see him and Romero being 1a and 1b for a long time if they stay healthy.

Batter's Box favourite Richard Griffin interviews Brandy Halladay.
John Northey - Friday, June 25 2010 @ 12:26 PM EDT (#217556) #
The interview with Brandy Halladay is worth reading, even if Griffin was his usual self. He just kept trying to get her to say negatives about JP which was silly.

It really sounds like she loved/loves Toronto a lot and wishes they could've stayed here. I can understand their frustration though over the broken promises and the like. Who knows, maybe their son will play for the Canadian national team someday :)

fyi, many of the Jays faced Halladay on March 31, scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning:

I agree with John Northey, great interview despite Griffin trying for 45 minutes to get her to slam the Jays.  She seems like a special lady.

Roy deserves a special lady. Glad that worked out.

In other ex-Jay news, the Pirates have designated Dana Eveland for assignment. Looks like they already regret the Uviedo trade.

Getting really far ahead of myself, yes, but is anyone else attracted to the idea of Fredi Gonzalez becoming the manager at the end of the season?
92-93 - Friday, June 25 2010 @ 01:52 PM EDT (#217564) #

Roy Halladay vs. this edition of the free-swinging Blue Jays is a real recipe for disaster, he might get through 9 innings in 60 pitches. Let's hope the Blue Jays dink n dunk their way to victory tonight the way we've all seen Doc go down many times, on the kind of hits like Buck's 2RBI check-swing the other night. Or a fly ball that barely carries out to the flower pots in LF. It would also be pretty ironic if his poor fielding position leads to him getting nailed by a comebacker tonight.

It amazes me that he's still on the banner.

Parker - Friday, June 25 2010 @ 02:21 PM EDT (#217566) #
I'll be rooting for Doc tonight.  I won't be able to help myself, and I wouldn't want to even if I could.

Reading that Griffin article just makes me despise Ricciardi all the more.  Maybe his hands were tied on some issues, but I'm quite confident that nobody from Rogers brass ordered him to create that goddamn media circus by blabbing to the press about shopping Doc around and putting the Halladay family through all that unnecessary grief.  Doc and his family deserved better.
John Northey - Friday, June 25 2010 @ 02:35 PM EDT (#217567) #
JP and secrets do not go well together. If he worked for the government he'd be the first person passing along info to the media except he'd do it publicly. Might be part of what annoyed Toronto's media about him - they couldn't get him to tell them stuff off the record (thus creating interesting stories where their ability to get sources looks strong) as everything ended up on the record (which any blogger could've gotten).

I still wonder though if he ran over Griffin's dog or something.
Alex Obal - Friday, June 25 2010 @ 02:56 PM EDT (#217568) #
great interview despite Griffin trying for 45 minutes to get her to slam the Jays. She seems like a special lady.

Word.

If you wanted to actively go after Halladay with bunts, it might make sense to start Wise tonight, over Hoffpauir. Wise has 4 hits on 12 bunts (including bunts that were meant to be sac bunts) in his limited playing time over the last two years.

It's hilarous how people gobble up Griffin's vindictive drivel. I suggest you read Dick's article from July 8th, 2009, and the article he was referring to written by Danny Knobler on July 5th, 2009. If anybody is to blame for the "goddamn media circus" it's people like Griffin himself, not JP Ricciardi. He certainly didn't blab to the press about shopping Doc around, he merely responded to the media's questions in as straight-forward a manner as possible, and then gets raked over the coals for it by revisionist history. It's not Ricciardi's fault the media isn't mentally retarded and understood that if the Jays got what they wanted, Halladay was gone. I especially laugh at the fact that Ricciardi is getting ripped for being honest in light of the BJ Ryan lying fiasco.

[Brandy Halladay]:  “I don't think that there was a change [between JP and AA].  I think J.P. took a lot of heat for things he shouldn't have taken heat for. That's just my opinion from behind the doors. I think his hands were tied a lot. I think he did the best for us that he could. There wasn't a noticeable change in the way things were handled. It was just another change. . . . “

What a creep Griffin is.  Trying to get her to say something she clearly won’t say, because she doesn’t *believe* it.   He’s unprofessional.   Period.   J.P. must have told Griffin exactly what he thought of him once,  or maybe twice.

J.P. must have told Griffin exactly what he thought of him once,  or maybe twice.

Maybe more, but what I remember was Ricciardi's very public insulting of Griffin's baseball knowledge at a press conference following Carlos Tosca's firing. Something (very loosely remembered & translated), along the lines of "Richard, you don't know anything about baseball". And Griffin is someone who carries a grudge long and deeply. And lets it guide his "journalism".

But, regarding the interview, didn't anyone else find her constant use of "we" a bit creepy?

Maybe not. Maybe it was Brandy's turn to pitch on those nights when Halladay got hit hard. I know some of these events are family decisions, but still... that was weird.

It amazes me we haven't revoked your membership priviledges here!   You made your point already in the "Doc's perfect game" thread and I'm really tired of you whining about it and your bitchy attitude in general.  It's not like you pay for the content for this site so what's your major malfunction?  We'll get around to changing the banner when we're good and ready and not because you demand it.  We have lives and this is a hobby for us, not our life's work!  Smarten the @#$% up already!

Griffin was against Ricciardi almost immediately.  As I recall, Griffin published a pretty negative column the day after Ricciardi was hired.

You made your point already in the "Doc's perfect game" thread and I'm really tired of you whining about it

Oh my apologies, I didn't realize pointing out a month later I was amazed by it meant I was whining about it.

We'll get around to changing the banner when we're good and ready and not because you demand it

There's a lot of anger bubbling over here. Nobody is demanding it.

We have lives and this is a hobby for us, not our life's work!

No doubt. But people have offered to do it for you - I remember someone posting a picture in a thread here, another guy offering his services to do it, and another going so far as to actually do it, incorporating a nice little Batter's Box within. http://haroldcookphotography.ca/BATTERSBOX.jpg

Don't attack me - get it over with and ban me if it's unreasonable to be amazed by it 6+ months later and to voice my bitchy, major malfunction. Or just check your hatred at the door and try to read with a little bit more of an open mind.

I'm totally fine with leaving Doc up there for the foreseeable future.

Mike Green's history collage would be good. Perhaps instead of players from each era, just include a couple defining moments - such as Bell catching the last out to clinch the Pennant in 1985, and Carter catching the last out at first in 1992.  Perhaps include Stieb's no hitter (back when no-no's were rare and significant events), or an image from the first snowy game.

But I certainly don't think it is a matter to get too worked up over either way. (Unless , of course, I disagree with the selection; then &#$#@(*@#$!!!)

Weirdest moment of the night for me was Wells drawing a walk of Halladay.

My fragile sense of understanding this universe took a big step back on that one.

TamRa - Saturday, June 26 2010 @ 01:10 PM EDT (#217593) #
If it were possible to do it and make it look cool, I'd love to see a banner that was sort of a collage of the most important players and moments startng with the snowy opening day and then something from '85 and merging into Bell, Stieb, Fernandez, Alomar 92 (a triple play pic?), 93 (Carter leaping) Hentgen, Delgado, Halladay...whatever else seems appropriate...that would stretch all the way across.

Probably need smaller pics to fit it all in but skillfully done, it could be nice.
