On Sunday night, the farm was utterly helpless, losing every game they played. Monday was a little better. Offense was the theme of the night, as the farm scored 26 runs. That may not sound hugely impressive, but only three games were played with one rain-out, one day off, and one all-star break.

Las Vegas 10 at Colorado Springs 6

What must have been an exciting back and forth game was finally put out of reach in the eight when the 51s put up a five-spot to seal the game. Offense was the theme of the night, as it so often is in Colorado Springs. Top performances included Mike McCoy's three walks and solo homer, J.P. Arencibia fell a triple short of the cycle, and Brad Emaus singled, walked, and stole two bases.

Luis Perez had a rough day, giving up five runs in as many innings, but in the run-scoring environment of Colorado Springs that was good enough to give his team a chance to win, which they took advantage of. Merkin Valdez and Jesse Carlson mostly held the Sky Sox at bay.

New Hampshire - scheduled day off

Dunedin - postponed

Lansing - all-star break

Auburn 12 at Mahoning Valley 0

It was a repeat of opening day as Auburn smacked their opponent around 12-0. They put up a 7-spot in the second inning and just kept piling it on. Lots of individual performances could be highlighted, and so lots of individual WILL be highlighted! Such as: Oliver Dominguez, recently demoted, reached base four times on a single and three walks, Carlos Perez was only 1-5 but the 1 was a grand slam, and John Roberts collected two singles, a triple, and a walk. Starter Sam Strickland, a 25th rounder from 2009, hurled six shut-out innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out one. Zach Outman proved his dedication to the Three True Outcomes by striking out five and walking three in just two innings of work.

DSL Jays 4 at DSL Tigers 1

Three Stars!
3.
J.P. Arencibia - single, double, homer
2. Sam Strickland - 6 shut-out innings
1. Mike McCoy - 3 walks, HR

The GCL Blue Jays made their debut tonight and they lost 2-1.  Jake Marisnick went 1-4 in his professional debut and Moises Sierra went 2-4 in his first rehab game of the year.

JPA seems to have completely adjusted to AAA pitching.  His June stats:

(16 games)  .375 avg, 6 doubles, 7 homers, 11 rbi's, 5 bb, 14 k, 1.207 ops.

Jeroloman deserves to be in AAA, and Arencibia's likely .300 MLB OBP and .450-500 SLG would fit right in on a Gaston team.

They've got a tricky catcher promotion issue at the lower levels too.  D'Arnaud really could use more time at Dunedin.  Jimenez has had a year and a half in Lansing, and could equally well stay or move up.  Carlos Perez is only 9 months younger than Jimenez, and is going to kill the NYPL.  He could have started the season in Lansing.   Personally, I suspect that Perez is the best of a very good lot.  I imagine that the club will just let the situation sit for another month or so.  They've got plenty of catching options for New Hampshire if Jeroloman is moved up.

Buck and Molina, flawed as they are,  seem to have exceeded the Jays expectations.  I suppose we will need to move one of these guys to open up a spot for the young catchers to move up the ladder .  Any chance of getting a B / B- type prospect back for Buck, given his power, affordable contract and recent sucking less on D?  I could see a contender like the Tigers wanting to add an offensive component to their catching rotation.

I believe that trading Buck by the deadline is part of the plan. What comes back remains to be seen.

The Yankees would figure to be in the market for a catcher, not wanting to count on Posada for more than a couple of games a week and wanting a plan B for Cervelli.

I wonder if the Jays will consider promoting Arencibia at the all-star break. Give Hoffpauir from now until then to make an impression, see if he can play some 3B. Then, at the all-star break, maybe you activate Snider and call on JP, while sending out Wise and Green. Hoffpauir serves the 25th man role. Bautista serves as your 4th outfielder/3rd baseman. Arencibia gets the Buster Posey treatment, catching once or twice a week and spelling Overbay/Lewis as a DH against left-handers, while Lind plays 1B/Left.

Then maybe you move Buck before August. Or hold him and take a likely 2nd-round comp pick when he signs elsewhere in the offseason.

TamRa - Tuesday, June 22 2010 @ 12:22 PM EDT (#217381) #
someone on this board pointed out to me the other day that Buck has, twice before, had a "career first half" only to go south as the season wore on.

If' I'm AA, i make it know to any potential contender that we are ready to talk about him NOW and will remain so through the deadline. I wouldn't risk him going south on us while we wait to a more opportune time.

Bringing on JPA while he's hot makes sense to me, Jeroloman is well overdue for AAA, and if the younger guys need to go slower, Jaspe and an organizational soldier like Luizza (for instance) can hold the fort at NH.

I think there are probably more potential buyers in the market fo catchers than there are for 1B.

Heck, someone mentioned the Yankees - If the resign themselves to forcing Posada to DH most of the time then adding a starter-caliber guy makes a good deal of sense for them.

With the July 2 international signing period just over a week away it appears, per Baseball America, the Jays are linked to a few players.

Everybody already knows about the rumours concerning the $2.8 million contract for Venezuelan righty Adonis Cardona.

It also looks like the Jays are being linked to another top pitcher - Mexican righthander Luis Heredia.  Rumours are that the bidding is already near $2.2 million with the Jays and Pirates being the favorites.  However, he cannot sign until he turns 16 in August.  The Jays (and Reds) are also connected to one of the top lefthanders on the market - Venezuelan Angel Mejias.

Man these next two months should be a lot of fun with the international signing period and then draft signings.  Come to think about it, it's kind of ridiculous the amount of talent AA has brought into the organization in under a year.

Maldoff - Tuesday, June 22 2010 @ 02:12 PM EDT (#217403) #

Anyone know when we may see the two high draft picks that have signed so far (Wojo and Sanchez) pitch their first games?

Also, the GCL team has an inordinate amount of guys on the 60-day DL. Are they all significantly hurt? If so, does anyone have an update on guys like Carlos Pina, Tyler Ybarra and Nicholas Bidois? All are young guys who did well in the GCL last year.

Denoit - Tuesday, June 22 2010 @ 02:19 PM EDT (#217407) #

Come to think about it, it's kind of ridiculous the amount of talent AA has brought into the organization in under a year.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. I for one am a fan of what Anthopolous is doing, but untill I see some of these guys preforming at the Major League level im not convinced. There is no guarentee Wallace, d'Arnaud, or Drabek are significant pieces (they have been good, but not great). I know people get all excited after they read up on the draft picks and see all the different scouting reports, but lets be honest most of them will never play a single game in the bigs. It's going to take 2 or 3 years to really see what kind of talent Anthopolous has actually brought on board. Now I will say this though, he has brought in some pretty good Major Leauge ready pieces. Brandon Morrow is looking more and more like a steal, Fred Lewis was a steal the day he aquired him, and his free agent signings have preformed better than expected making him look pretty good.

Come to think about it, it's kind of ridiculous the amount of talent AA has brought into the organization in under a year.

What might be even more ridiculous is that with all the impressive talent he may have brought in over the last year, we have all these in-house prospects from our much-maligned system outperforming all these new "studs".

I mean 22 year old Drabek's been solid, but what he's doing doesn't quite match up to what 23 year old Cecil or 20 year old Alvarez are doing.

23 year old Wallace has been solid, but what he's doing doesn't quite match up to what 22 year old Snider or 24 year old Arencibia are doing.

21 year old D'Arnaud has been solid, but what he's doing doesn't quite match to what 21 year old Talley or 20 year old Jiminez are doing.

And 21 year old Hechevarria isn't matching up very well against 20 year old Pastornicky so far or even 21 year old Jackson so far, either.

sam - Tuesday, June 22 2010 @ 03:47 PM EDT (#217422) #
You're both certainly right, but there's no denying the talent he's brought in.  Whether any of these players realize their ceilings or not, Drabek, Wallace, Hech, D'arnaud are all potentially high impact players of which we had very little.  I'm not going to compare prospects within our organization, I'm glad for any prospect who excels in a Jays uniform regardless of who drafted and signed them.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Jays sign Cardona and one other top international free agent this year, and sign Macguire and then one or two of Bryant, Thon, and Vander Tuig, do the Jays have a top 5 farm system?  Obviously those IFA are a long ways off and probably don't factor in the rankings, but considering the years some of our guys are having I'd say so.  I guess the system is lacking that franchise type player that most top 5 systems have, but the depth has got to be impressive.

To further put things into perspective.  If one of the drafted HS pitchers follows the Halladay career path then he'll be a major contributor starting in 2016.

I believe that trading Buck by the deadline is part of the plan. What comes back remains to be seen.

I don't know if AA will pull the trigger on a Buck deal, but the discussion of "should he or shouldn't he" comes down to whether or not AA can get more than Buck's likely type B free agent status would net him in draft picks.

Speaking of John Buck....

AL Catchers:

  1. V.Martinez (31): 249pa, .843ops, .863wOBA
  2. J.Buck (29):  204pa, .841ops, .356wOBA
  3. J.Mauer (27):  259pa, .818ops, .356wOBA

Considering his solid numbers last year (albeit with few AB), shouldn't this guy be approaching Type-A status by now?

would it be reasonable to speculate about Egan Smith moving back up into Jenkins' turn? They actually have more than four guys still who've gotten regular turns so maybe not but one wonders...

also - Chris Aguilla has disappeared from the Vegas roster but there's no listed transaction.

Balls seem to be flying in Las Vegas even more than usual.  The team batting slash line is .295/.348/.475, and the team ERA is 6.01 with 813 hits in 631 innings.  So, if you see a hitter batting .290/.340/.500 in Las Vegas, the translation to the Rogers Centre will probably be something like .225/.285/.440.  A good hitter will post something like .340/.420/.550, i.e. what Emaus is doing so far.  Conversely, an ERA of 4.50 is actually pretty good in that environment, and an ERA under 4 is great.

Shawn Bowman continues to rake.  The power has always been there, but he seems to have developed reasonable control of the strike zone.

The comments about trading Buck IMO are premature.

Cito has said the organization will trade for help if the team is 5 games out of a wild card spot by the All Star break. He named the SP and offense as good enough but feels added strength is needed in the bullpen.

The 38-33 record is the same this year as last year. We know what happened by season's end of 2009. At the 2009 AS break we were 8 games back of the wild card with a 44-46 record which I guess was not good enough to be a buyer.

Jerry and Alan were saying on the radio that the 2 hottest teams over the past 30 games Atlanta and Boston (22-8) could easily reverse that over the next 30 games which takes us near July 31. I guess anyone can play .733 ball over a 1 month stretch.

I always thought of Cito as classy and honest. So I believe him, that he thinks this team has a legitimate shot. I am still optimistic we are a legitimate long shot.

We don't have a hot Hill/Lind/Scuttoro this year but do have a hot Wells/JB/Buck/Gonzales and really good SPs. I don't know how Lind/Hill can be cold for so long (70 games). Currently Lind/Hill are on pace for 20Hr & 65 RBI seasons which some will consider an OK year but maybe they will get very hot at sometime they are capable.

To me it is obvious that we need a good closer. I think other people would agree. I hope AA succeeds in getting one.

LUCK STAY WITH US.
Marc Hulet - Wednesday, June 23 2010 @ 01:24 PM EDT (#217466) #
Honestly, I think trying to compete in 2010 is a mistake (and not sure the Jays really believe they can)... If you're going to commit to rebuilding, you have to commit 100% and reversing in mid-stream just doesn't work. This club is better than any of us expected but it's not a WS-calibre team. I'm fine with trying to compete this year with what the team has - and not trading Buck, Gonzalez, Gregg, etc. - but shedding (significant) talent in the minors for a misguided attempt to win now is just wrong and would end badly.
92-93 - Wednesday, June 23 2010 @ 02:19 PM EDT (#217469) #
Agreed. Taking on $ on contracts (Sheets, Oswalt, Dunn...) for low level prospects is fine, but anything that jeopardizes the team's future would be ridiculous. Another approach would be to go after somebody like Prince Fielder, for whom you could give up significant prospects and not be sacrificing the future if Rogers is ready to put its money where its mouth is.
85bluejay - Wednesday, June 23 2010 @ 02:52 PM EDT (#217470) #

Agreed. Trading prospects of any significance is ridiculous - As for Fielder, I'd say no because I'm uneasy with his

body type (how quickly his dad went downhill), the cost in both prospects/money  - prefer to give Wallace a chance.

John Northey - Wednesday, June 23 2010 @ 03:32 PM EDT (#217473) #
Yeah, best to just go for guys other teams are dumping for minimal prospects or demand a mix of vet and prospects for a prospect (ie: trade a starter for a prospect plus a vet closer). AA will be tested in the next month or two that is for sure.
Mike Green - Wednesday, June 23 2010 @ 05:06 PM EDT (#217482) #

More news from Baseball America.

It looks like they expect Toronto (and New York) to be one of the top spending teams in the international market this year.

And the Jays are linked to two of the top 3 Venezuelan prospects - righthander Adonis Cardona (as we know) and now shortstop Rougned Odor.

Link is subscriber only:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/international-affairs/2010/2610233.html

If Toronto can sign several of these top ranked international players, it will be nice to see the influx of all this talent! Yes, they will most likely be years away and some will not make it to the majors but the more talent an organization has the better odds of success, right?
