Las Vegas were losing to Colorado Springs but they scored three runs off Huston Street and four off Juan Rincon to get the win.  New Hampshire had excellent pitching by Ronald Uviedo, BJ LaMura and Tim Collins to shut out Erie.  An Eric Thames home run in the first was all the scoring they needed.  Ryan Tepera pitched seven innings and didn't give up an earned run as Lansing won.  Dunedin are in their all star break.

Colorado Springs 4  Las Vegas 9

Brad Mills gave up a run in the first inning, two infield singles followed by another ground ball single to the outfield made it 1-0.  Jarrett Hoffpauir tripled to lead off the Vegas first and scored when Brett Wallace singled.

Mills was touched for a solo home run and following an error, a two run home run in the fourth and Colorado led 4-1.  JP Arencibia doubled leading off the fourth and he scored on a ground out.

Mills was pulled after four innings and 81 pitches and Josh Roenicke came on and pitched three hitless, shutout innings.  Colorado brought on Huston Street in the seventh and Jorge Padilla greeted him with a double.  With two out Adam Calderone singled to drive in Padilla.  Calderone stole second and scored when Hoffpauir singled and went to second on the throw.  That tied the game.  Luis Figueroa followed with another single to score Hoffpauir Wallace singled again but the 51's ended the inning with a 5-4 lead.

Jesse Carlson pitched the eighth and loaded the bases but escaped without allowing a run.  Colorado called on Juan Rincon in the eighth and Arencibia greeted him with a solo home run.  Padilla then reached on a single, Emaus walked, Calderone singled, Hoffpauir drew a bases loaded walk, Diaz singled in two more runs.  In all Las Vegas scored four more runs to put them up 9-4.  Carlson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Las Vegas had 14 hits, Wallace had three hits, Hoffpauir, Arencibia, Padilla and Calderone had two hits each.

New Hampshire 4   Erie 0

Eric Thames hit a two run home run in the first inning and the pitching took care of the rest.  Ronald Uviedo was outstanding, he pitched five shutout innings giving up just three hits and two walks.  He also had four K's.  BJ LaMura added two shutout innings and Tim Collins pitched the last two perfect innings, striking out the side in the ninth.  Fisher Cat closer, Danny Farquhar, might have been on call for the ninth but the Fisher Cats added two unearned runs in the top of the ninth.  Shawn Bowman singled, stole second and scored on an error.  Manny Mayorson, who had been intentionally walked, scored on a Brian Jeroloman sac fly.

Darin Mastroianni was the only Fisher Cat with two hits.

Dunedin - All Star Break

Lansing 6  Burlington 4

Lansing jumped out to a big lead before the bullpen coughed up some late runs.  The Lugnuts scored their first run in the second, Balbino Fuenmayor walked and later scored on a passed ball.  In the third inning Kevin Nolan and AJ Jimenez singled and Brad Glenn hit a three run home run to make it 4-0.  Sean Ochinko added a solo home run to make it 5-0.

Manwhile Ryan Tepera had things under control, he didn't have more than one base runner an inning until the seventh where he threw the ball away with a runner on first.  The runner scored to make it 5-1 but Tepera escaped further trouble.  Tepera went seven innings and gave up just the unearned run.

The Lugnuts got that run back in the eighth, Ryan Schimpf doubled and scored on a Fuenmayor single.  Evan Crawford gave up a run in the eighth and Brian Slover two runs in the ninth but Steve Turnbull nailed down the save.

Kevin Nolan had three hits for the Luggies.

Odd - why was Mills pulled so early? Injured? Rain delay?

Odd - why was Mills pulled so early? Injured? Rain delay?

Ineffective?  81 pitches in four innings.  Seven baserunners in four innings?  Two home runs in fourth inning?

I listened to the Fisher Cats game last night.  Collins sounded really impressive, he was hitting 92-93 mph according to the broadcaster and John Lott.  His first inning he needed 6 pitches to retire the side and then stuck out the side in order in the 9th.  John Lott from the post was there covering the game he had a few interesting tweets regarding Collins:

"Collins 2 perfect IP, struck out last 3 batters. Fastball 92-93, curve 75-76. Takes 6-8 secs. between pitches."

I asked Lott via twitter if Collins was as impressive as he sounded and this was his response:

"He sure was. I moved down to front row to watch. Jaw-dropping."

And finally he tweeted this about Collins:

"First time I'd seen Collins since spring training 2 yrs ago. Stands about 5-6, never shows ball before it leaves hand, great low-body torque"

Thought I would pass those along.

Tim Collins just continues to flat out amaze. After last night's peformance his seasonal line sits at:

30 1/3 IP, 6.53 H/9, 3.85 BB/9, 15.13 K/9, 3.92 K/BB

Somehow, he is either maintaining or improving almost every peripheral each season despite being consistently one of the youngest pitchers in his league. For instance, this season he is only one of two 20 year olds in the Eastern League (Casey Kelly being the other). In fact, digging further he is the fourth youngest pitcher in all of AA. I know well the normal caveats about the prospects for minor league pitchers, much less minor league pitchers that are barely taller than my 13 year old son, but at what point does age-relative performance dictate that Collins might just be a very special player?

I've bitten the bullet this year and jumped full bore on the Collins train.

I don't care how small he is, his stuff is very good, and his numbers are flat out incredible.

any other 20 year old doing this at AA would be getting worshipped.

On the other side of the spectrum from Tim Collins sits Josh Roenicke, a 27 year old reliever that has now put up the following line in AAA across the last 3 seasons:

82 2/3 IP, 7.62 H/9, 2.50 BB/9, 10.02 K/9. 4.00 K/BB

Obviously, walks have been his achilles heel in his two very short stints with the big club, however his numbers in AAA seem to indicate that he is quite capable of limiting the free passes. With the exception of the walks, the rest of his peripherals with the Jays seem to mirror his AAA track record. I for one would much rather have Roenicke in Toronto and working with Walton on a regular basis and given the chance to get past what from my observations may be nothing more than a matter of nerves.

Considering that they represent the two true power arms in the bullpen, I would really like to see Purcey and Roenicke given a legitimate opportunity to establish themselves this season.

Tim Collins is undoubtedly the best player scouted by J.P. Ricciardi's father for the Blue Jays ever, quite the non-drafted free agent signing.   How could anyone root against this guy?  One thing that struck me about Collins is his extreme splits in day vs. night games - shocking really.

Day:       9 G   8.71 ERA  10.1 IP 12 H  4 HR  5 BB  20 K  .273 AVG
Night:  15 G   0.90 ERA   20 IP   10 H  0 HR  8 BB  31 K  .145 AVG
His K rate during the day is actually higher, walk rate is pretty similar, but that ERA is almost 10 times higher.  Guess he's just not a morning person?  Or is his mystique just not as strong in the light of day?

At night, he can rest easier knowing that his pot of gold is safe until at least daybreak.

...I'll show myself out.

Nice article from John Lott in the post about some Jay's minor league players.  Some highlights, Sierra's leg is fine but he injured his wrist now, Ahrens will no longer switch hit and they are in no hurry to move McDade up to AA yet according to Lacava.

John Lott has a few interesting notes:
  • Kevin Ahrens is giving up switch-hitting, going to hit right-handed only.
  • Moises Sierra's leg is better, but he hurt his wrist and isn't close to returning.

Adam Loewen continues to mash, with a homer and two doubles in his first 3 PAs tonight.  Ruth, Ankiel, Loewen...
jgadfly - Saturday, June 12 2010 @ 10:08 PM EDT (#216918) #
Loewen now 5 for 5 ; 1 single,  3 doubles and a homerun , 4 rbi and average now .303   ( plus outfield assist  at 3rd) with game going into the bottom of the 9th
PeteMoss - Saturday, June 12 2010 @ 10:18 PM EDT (#216919) #
Does anyone know how Loewen's situation works with regards to the Jays and being under their control beyond this season? He signed a two year deal last year so that would expire at the end of the season but does he become a free agent or will he still be under the Jays control when it ends?

Also would you consider bringing him up to AAA soon? He's 26... so not really much reason to leave him in AA all year if he's figured it out.
TamRa - Saturday, June 12 2010 @ 10:39 PM EDT (#216920) #
it's been repeatedly reported - enough that I assume it is reliable - that if the jays put him on the 40 man roster this off-season then he remains Jays property.

There's really no doubt at this point that will happen.

And yes, I think it's obvious he's mastered AA. I can't imagine what they are waiting for to promote him.

Sneeps - Sunday, June 13 2010 @ 01:08 AM EDT (#216921) #

JPA continues his hot streak tonight  -- 2 for 3 with a walk, and his 5th homer is 6 games.

A lot of scorching prospects in our system right now.
