Lansing defeated Cedar Rapids by a couple of runs and Dunedin’s ninth-inning comeback fell a run short. However, the real action on the evening came in Pennsylvania, where Zach Stewart faced off against Phillipe Aumont and 20 runs were scored in the game.

Fresno 6 @ Las Vegas 4Boxscore

After 5 innings Fresno was up 5-0 and they would not relinquish the lead, despite the 51s getting 3 back in the sixth. Reider Gonzalez started and threw 84 pitches over 6 innings. He gave up all six runs, one unearned on a Brad Emaus error, on nine hits and a walk with one strikeout. Josh Roenicke pitched two innings of relief and Zach Jackson got a pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the ninth.

Jorge Padilla and Luis Figueroa each had a pair of hits to lead the Las Vegas offence. Brett Wallace, Adam Calderone and Emaus were all hitless against Madison Bumgarner. Brian Dopirak, Chris Aguila, Jonathan Diaz and JP Arencibia each had one hit, with Dopirak and Aguila’s going for extra bases. Dopirak drove in a run, as did Aguila on his solo home run.

New Hampshire 15 @ Reading 5 - Boxscore

The trials and tribulations of Phillipe Aumont continued last night, as the highly touted Canadian prospect had another rough start for Reading. Aumont surrendered seven runs over 5 innings to fall to 1-6 with a 7.43 ERA. His potential notwithstanding, I wonder if Amaro sometimes looks longingly at pictures of Cliff Lee from last year. Over on the other side of the ledger, Zach Stewart, who has struggled somewhat this year, put together a very strong effort over 6 innings. Stewart struck out six, walked two and surrendered the single hit. Ronaldo Uviedo, newly acquired from the Pirates in the Dana Eveland trade, pitched 2 shutout innings and allowed three hits. Vincent Bongiovanni made the game closer than it appeared, by allowing four runs in the ninth on five hits and a walk.

Behind 18 hits New Hampshire ranked up 15 runs off Reading pitching and was up 7-0 after 2 innings. After 3 innings of no runs, New Hampshire scored 8 runs over the last four innings. Up and down the lineup everyone contributed, from leadoff hitter Calix Crabbe going 3-for-6 to the number eight hitter, Manny Mayorson, who was 2-for-5. Number nine hitter Brian Jeroloman was the only starter without a base hit, but he added two walks. The Fisher Cats attack was led by six home runs, one apiece from Eric Thames and David Cooper and a pair each from Adam Loewen and Dan Perales. Shawn Bowman continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-5 night and Jonathan Jaspe was 3-for-5.

Dunedin 3 @ Fort Myers 4Boxscore

Dunedin’s bats were stifled by Daniel Osterbrook, who allowed one run on two hits over 6 innings. Osterbrook was touched in the sixth inning by Wellinton Ramirez for a solo home run. Then came a much tougher test than Dunedin usually faces, as rehabbing Twins pitcher Pat Neshek came in for an inning and struck out two. Dunedin’s other hits were picked up by Michael McDade, Yan Gomes and John Tolisano, while Tyler Pastornicky drew both of the club’s walks. Dunedin scored twice in the top of the ninth to cut the defecit to one, but with two out and the tying run, Tolisano, on third, Matt Liuzza flew out to end the game. With Dunedin being held to four hits, several members of the lineup, including Adeiny Hechavarria, were held hitless.

Andrew Liebel started for Dunedin and took the loss after not pitching well. Although he only gave up three earned runs, four runs, over 6 innings, Liebel didn’t pitch convincingly, walking four and surrendering nine hits. Frank Gailey and Alan Farina continue to find success this year, as Gailey went 2 shutout innings with four strikeouts and Farina escaped a couple of hits in the eighth.

Cedar Rapids 6 @ Lansing 8Boxscore

Ryan Shropshire started for Lansing and went 6 strong innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out three. Shropshire picked up his third victory of the year and lowered his ERA to 5.46. Nestor Molina came in out of the bullpen and went 2.1 innings. Molina didn’t have his best stuff and gave up seven hits against one strikeout. Cedar Rapids scored twice off him and Molina then departed with the bases loaded. Steve Turnbull came in to shut the door and allowed two more of Molina’s runners to score, before shutting the door to pick up his thirteenth save.

Ryan Goins and AJ Jimenez led the Lugnuts offence with three hits apiece. Goins scored and added an RBI while Jimenez drove in two runs. Ryan Schimpf also had a solid game from the leadoff spot, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, two runs, a double and an RBI. Eric Eiland had one hit and scored a run, while Kenny Wilson was held hitless but added a run. Wilson also stole a base, his seventeenth, as did Jimenez, while Goins was caught stealing for the fifth time. Mark Sobolewski, Sean Ochinko and Bradley Glenn each had a hit and at least one RBI, with Ochinko scoring twice and Glenn driving home two runs and earning a walk.

DSL Rangers 3 @ DSL Blue Jays 0 (8 innings)Boxscore

The DSL Blue Jays were held to four hits by the DSL Rangers. Fausto Natera hit a double and Leonardo Hernandez had half of the team’s hits and leads the team with a .429 average. Cesar Sanchez took the loss after giving up two runs over 3 innings before Richard Rodriguez was very impressive out of the bullpen with 4 shutout innings that included six strikeouts.

Three Stars:
3rd Star – Dan Perales, 2-4, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, BB, 6 TB
2nd Star – Zach Stewart, 6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
1st Star – Adam Loewen, 4-6, 3 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 10 TB

Thank you to all minor league updaters for adding the DSL to the update.  Much appreciated.

Brett Wallace has hit a bit of a rough patch.  Any reason as to why?
ayjackson - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 10:17 AM EDT (#216107) #

DSL Jays SS and leadoff hitter, Alexander Rojas just turned 17, so he may be interesting to follow.

China fan - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 10:25 AM EDT (#216108) #
Interesting that Brad Emaus is playing at 3B, rather than 2B.   The arrival of Diaz at SS has allowed Figueroa to shift to 2B for now.  I wonder if Emaus has now permanently left New Hampshire behind, with the Jays being his next stop in September or 2011.    I'm a bit surprised, because Bowman was out-hitting him at New Hampshire lately, but maybe Emaus (being younger) is still assessed as the better prospect.
Forkball - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 10:30 AM EDT (#216109) #
I think the combination of Aaron Hill, a number of middle infield prospects (some of who will move to 2B sooner or later), and no sure thing at 3B in the majors or minors makes Emaus is a good candidate to stick at 3B until he makes it or washes out.
China fan - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 10:42 AM EDT (#216112) #
I agree with you, Forkball, which is why I was surprised that Emaus was slotted into 2B so often at New Hampshire in recent weeks.   But maybe his skills are good enough to allow him to switch between 2B and 3B without any problems.   I would have assumed that 2B and 3B are sufficiently different that a prospect would need to stick at one or the other, once he reaches the high minors, to get the necessary experience for the majors, but maybe I'm wrong.

Talking about rough patches, whatever happen to Ahrens in Dunedin ?

chris_jays - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 11:37 AM EDT (#216120) #
Well Wallace has certainly struggled since everyone was calling for his promotion to the bigs in place of Overbay.

Just putting it in perspective.

Since May 1, Wallace has hit .278/.328/.448 in an extreme hitters park in AAA

Overbay since May 12 has hit .325/.366/.585

Surely there is not a need at all for Wallace to be called up.

mamboon - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 12:12 PM EDT (#216123) #

China... I think you are correct.  Emaus is great at both 2B and 3B.   And he even socked a round tripper in his 1st AB  in  AAA. Las Vegas is riddled with injuries in the infield.  Diaz and Emaus (despite the errors committed by them last night and the night before) are the best fielders in the Jays organization.  Las Vegas was hurting with 2B, 3B and SS positions racking up 35 errors or so before Emaus and Diaz moved up to AAA.  Also, Diaz can play 2B and 3B in addition to SS.  And another also, Calderone has been tearing things up in AAA with a couple HRs and he's had great D in the outfield.  I'd predict that Bowman is on his way up too because he's coming on with the bat... he might even see duty as a sometimes DH in LV since Deporak has had a tough year.  The 51s need the help.  I also hear that the home field condition at Las Vegas is awful.  Playing the ball off the third base side of the infield is a real crap shoot.  The ball takes all kinds of weird hops and the lights make pop flies to 3B hard to see.  Last night the radio guy at LV said Diaz was shading toward 3B backing up Emaus at third.  Diaz rescued a couple that were off Emaus' glove on bad hops and made the PO to Wallace.  He also was able to get a pop fly that the Figeroa lost in the lights.  To his credit, Figeroa is on fire at the plate and he made some major league plays at 2B and was recognized for his defence play of the night on a hard hit one hopper to deep 2nd, according to the radio guy.  Remembering back to Spring Training, both Emaus and Diaz did some nice 3B defence work when they played with the Jays in 2 or three games that I saw in Dunedin.  The long and the short is that NH has some really great talent and now the 51s can benefit from some great position players who are moving up.

And by the way, it looks like I will be able to catch a couple of games in Dunedin this weekend.  Is there anything in particular thay you esteemed Bauxites would like me to watch out for?  Of course I will check out A-Hech and my fav "Mr Mike the Man" McDade, but let me know if you'd like reports on others.  I also have a buddy who's a good photog.  Hopefully he can get me some good pics to post.

I'd be most interested in a defensive scouting report on Hechevarria, D'Arnaud, and Pastornicky.

So true chris_jays. I was pushing for Wallace but should've remembered the old rule - no one is as bad as they seem when slumping and no one is as good as they seem when streaking.

Guess there is a reason I'm here instead of at 1 Blue Jays Way.

Check out Ahrens

Ronald Uviedo is now listed to start for the Fisher cats on Sunday.

Mamboon, I would be interested to know how Yan Gomes looks if he plays.  He is an under the radar guy who has been hitting well this season.

Interesting!

He started 21 or 26 games in 2009. I didn't tease out his performance as a starter, but his overall states look good: wonder why the Pirates put him in the pen.

I tend to feel bad for the Pirates, and hope their personnel moves help raise them towards respectability. However, in this case, I really hope this comes back to bite them! Basically, I only hope that when they deal with the Jays.

(and stats - left the room and came back; presumed I had read over my post before leaving!)

There's actually a blurb about Wallace today in one of BP's articles, basically says his power is a mirage as he's only mashing at home (not recently) and his plate discipline has gotten worse every year since college.  He actually only has 3 more walks than Arencibia does this year in 46 more at bats.  I won't post the BP link as it's subscription only.

Arencibia 13bb/39 k's 168 at bats

Wallace 16bb/55k 214 at bats.

As opposed to Harden high (when Rich leaves his fastball up).

John Northey - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 03:29 PM EDT (#216145) #
Now there is a big piece of the puzzle with Wallace - sadly not a good one. I figured Vegas was helping but if his power is only appearing at home then it is scary. Odd for plate discipline to get worse every season though.

Checking the stats...
2008: walked in 8.1% of his PA
2009: 7.8%
2010: 6.8%

Yeah, I'd say that is going the wrong way. His OBP by year also has gone down - 427-367-342 For A and AA he has a 400+ OBP but AAA is at 350 so far. If he is to be what we all hope he can be he needs to learn to pick his pitches.
Gerry - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 04:00 PM EDT (#216146) #

Chuck Huggins is having his "welcome to AA kid" day.  He has given up nine runs including four home runs this afternoon in 5 innings.

Daniel Perales and Shawn Bowman have homered for NH who trail 9-6 in the sixth.

Ok Gerry, Trey, TJ and 92-93...

Here's my check out menu for games this weekend in Dunedin:

A-Hech, D'Arnaud, Pastornicky, Ahrens and Gomes.  And of course, my main man McDade.

I should be able to get some good pics too.

They really need to send Ahrens down.  He has to experience success at some level.  He hasn't even had a hot streak in three years.
metafour - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 10:48 PM EDT (#216165) #
I dont understand why they aren't trying to do something to re-establish Ahrens.  Maybe try sending him down and have him drop the switch-hitting experiment - he clearly cant bat left-handed and has been destroyed by RH pitching.
Sneeps - Thursday, June 03 2010 @ 11:53 PM EDT (#216167) #

I agree about Ahrens -- he isn't even playing too often in Dunedin with all those players there.

He desperately needs to experience some success.  Get him down to Lansing.

katman - Friday, June 04 2010 @ 12:44 AM EDT (#216168) #
On a team with Farquhar, Collins, and now Uviedo, why is Vincent Bongiovanni still pitching the 9th?

Given his stats, one might even wonder why he's on the team, and not a level down. His numbers at Dunedin last year were ok, but not great. His whole record to date isn't showing signs of controlling his stuff, or even of dominating minor league hitters. Big guy, lists as ok stuff with a ton of movement, but isn't it better to have him harness it somewhere before moving him up?
ayjackson - Friday, June 04 2010 @ 09:36 AM EDT (#216172) #

Anybody having trouble with posts mysteriously vanishing after pressing "submit"?  Anyway, I was sure I posted this last night, but as much grief as the 2007 draft class has received due to the dissappointment of Ahrens and Eiland and middling success of Arencibia, Tolisano and Jackson, the class could still be an epic class.  The following draftees from that class are having success three years later:

Cecil, Magnuson, Farina, Mills, Rzepczynski, McDade, Boone, Emaus, Talley, and Mastroianni.  (I'm not down on Arencibia, Tolisano and Jackson either.)

MatO - Friday, June 04 2010 @ 09:36 AM EDT (#216173) #
Bongiovanni is a roster filler not a prospect.  He goes where he is needed so that the real prospects can pitch at their proper level.  He's at AA due to injuries.  When you're leading 15-1 I think that's just about the perfect time for a roster filler to be pitching.
