It doesn't look like Marc Rzepczynski will be starting for the Jays anytime soon.  After allowing nine runs in the PCL hell on Saturday, Zep's ERA is 18.56.  Lansing also lost and the only win was thanks to BJ LaMura who pitched six shutout innings for New Hampshire.  Chuck Huggins made his AA debut and pitched well in a losing cause.

Tacoma 17  Las Vegas 9

Another typical PCL game, 34 hits and 26 runs between the two teams.  Marc Rzepczynski gave up 9 runs, 8 earned, on 10 hits over 4.1 innings.  His ERA is now 18.56.  Lance Broadway and Stephen Register gave up four runs apiece and each sport ERA's north of 6.

Jarrett Hoffpair, who hit for the cycle on Friday, was 0-6 on Saturday.  Luis Figueroa and Jorge Padilla had three hits each.  Brett Wallace went 1-3 with a double and was twice hit by a pitch.  JP Arencibia was 2-5 with a double and a triple.

Trenton 3  New Hampshire 0 - game 1

Chuck Huggins made his AA debut and pitched well.  He gave up an unearned run in the first inning.  He walked the second hitter and then picked him off first but Jon Diaz missed the ball allowing the runner into second.  That became the first run on a two out double.  Huggins held Trenton off the scoreboard but put two men on in the sixth and was pulled for Trystan Magnuson.  The first hitter Magnuson faced singled in a run and a ground out scored another.  Huggins went 5.1 innings, and he allowed four hits and one walk with 3 K's.

New Hampshire didn't have a hit until the fourth inning and were held to three hits in total.

Trenton 0  New Hampshire 7 - game 2

After being held to just three hits in game number one, the Fisher Cats scored early and often in game number 2.  In the first inning Shawn Bowman and Adam Loewen drove in runs.  In the second inning Brian Jeroloman drove in Callix Crabbe to make it 3-0.  In the third inning Eric Thames doubled in a run and then Shawn Bowman hit a two run home run to make it 6-0.  Jeroloman got an rbi on a based loaded walk later in that inning.

BJ LaMura delivered a great start, six innings of two hit ball with 9 K's.

Charlotte at Dunedin - postponed

Lansing 2  South Bend 6

Evan Crawford struggled through three innings before he was done for the day.  In the first inning he walked three straight hitters, including walking in a run, and put the Lugnuts down 2-0.  In the third he gave up three straight singles, added in a walk and another hit, and gave up three more runs and the Lugnuts trailed 5-0.

The Lugnuts two runs came in the eight when Sean Ochinko singled in two runs.  Ochinko, Mark Sobolewski and AJ Jimenez had two hits each.

And for those who are interested the DSL Jays started their season on Saturday and lost.

Three Stars

3rd star - Chuck Huggins
2nd star - Shawn Bowman
1st star - BJ LaMura

Wow, seems like no one wants Dana's spot in the rotation, maybe they should have waited a bit before dumping him.  I listened to a little of the 51's game last nigt and Zep's slider was actually excellent early on but the announcers said the hitters were just sitting on his fastball and taking mighty hacks at it.  Sounds like he topped out at around 89 mph but it was consistently up in the zone.  Hopefully it's just a mechanical adjustment and he can get back on track.

Dunedin has a double header today, and I saw this article in the sun this morning on Hech by Elliot, early reports on him are sounding great:

New Hampshire is a much more interesting team than Las Vegas at the moment.  Lots of intriguing prospects here.  For example, Bowman's OPS is now at .918, while Jeroloman's OPS is at 1.020.   Nice to have strong performances at two key positions (3B and C) where the Jays will need help in the future.   I'd like to see both of them at AAA at some point this season -- let's give them every chance at a major-league shot in 2011 if they are good enough.  Eric Thames also looks good, with an OPS of .878.    Cooper's OPS is still only .647 but he's had a hot stretch lately.   Mastroianni has an OPS of .735 but he has 20 stolen bases and an OBP of .366.   And this is without mentioning Emaus, Loewen, and of course pitchers such as Drabek, Collins, Magnuson and Farquhar.

Top 12 prospects with a quarter season prospective:

Wallace

Drabek

Hechavarria

D'Arnaud

Alvarez

Stewart  (might be better off grooming him as a late inning guy)

Thames

Emaus

Jenkins

Jiminez

Arencibia

McDade

Promosing short season players(Pierre, Marisnik, C. Perez)

Injured: Moises Sierra, J. Jackson

Where the H did they go: Scott Campbell

AA traded away the franchise and spend some cash to do it but the sysyem looks great and with some good drafting this year we could easily be a top 5 system at the end of the season with promotions slowing down and Drabek likely to remain a prospect and possibly Wallace as well.

Thoughts? Did I forget anybody? Just looking to generate some discussion on what appears to be a nice looking system taking shape

Depending on the draft and International signings this summer, within 12 months AA has made our farm system one of the best in baseball.

Several names could be added who could make a real contribution, if not to the Jays, then to many other major league teams: Lubanski, Hoffpauir, Calderone, Loewen, Jerolman.

And what about Huggins, Tepera, Loup? Farina, Gailey, Ramirez?

The quality of coaching in the Jays minor league system encourages me in thinking that several more names will emerge over the next year, as well.

How life has changed!

I to believe you should add HUggins,Bell,Farina and Gailey.

After today's start Joel Carreno now sports a 12 K/9, with a 2.3 BB/9. He's been hittable, but those two numbers are encourageable. Anybody know more about his stuff?

Hey guys,

This is kind of off topic, but does anyone have any idea why Wade Townsend hasn't pitched yet.  I though he was headed to Dunedin, but to my knowledge he hasnt pitched yet.

Gerry - Sunday, May 30 2010 @ 04:14 PM EDT (#215803) #

My memory of Carreno is a pitcher with an average fastball but a very good slider.  When I saw him pitch I think he used his slider too much as though he didn't have as much confidence in his fastball.  His success in Dunedin suggests he might have more faith in his fastball and perhaps he has developed a third pitch such as a change-up.

Wade Townsend was released in spring training.

His K rate is pretty eye popping, been hounding prospect guru's for an updated scouting report but so far i'm coming up empty

Ramone -The article by Elliot is right on. Thanks for providing the link.  I've had the oppotunity of seeing A-Hech in about 6 of his 17 games with Dunedin.  He is physically impressive, I agree, but the thing I notice is his interactions with coaches and his fellow players.  He is mature beyond his years has an outstanding field presence and I believe the folks in Dunedin are working with him perfectly.  Saw the first game of the Double Header today and 5 innings of the second game.  A-Hech had a tough day.  Two throwing errors, struck out to end the first game and opened the second with a K too.  But he managed two doubles for the day, 1 in each game. (through the 5th inning of the second).  He seemed to be a bit distracted in the field.  But overall, the reports are indeed sounding great... and rightfully so!

China fan - thanks for the post.  I agree that New Hampshire is the gem of the farm right now.  Talent is great, but the new manager Rivera is doing a great job and the team seems to be rolling along like a well oiled machine.  Las Vegas has an infield that hits, but can't catch or throw.  I think that what I think the need is for Las Vegas.

Bowman is really coming on with the lumber.  The Emaus-Diaz duo in the mid infield is probably the best in the system as far as defence goes.  I think it's important to keep the record going in New Hampshire, so I would not expect alot of movement from New Hampshire to Las Vegas.  But if folks are going up to AAA from AA, it most likely would be Emaus, Bowman or Diaz.  All three have 300+ averages with runners on.  Diaz has AAA experience, including great defence. His current BB/K ratio is almost 2 to 1, the best of the three. Emaus is great in the field too at 2nd with 0 errors.  Bowman is on top of the batting among the three.

So, I predict there will be some limited movement, probably depending on injuries.  If there is an injury in the Las Vegas outfield, you probably should add Calderone (also has AAA experience)  to the list.  He's hit 8 round trippers and he's hitting 300+ with runners on too.

mamboon, thanks for the updates. It's great to have an active Dunedin fan around to go along with Lugnut Fan and Fisher Cat Fan.

The Jays really catch a break with an off day after the Tampa series and another one off after the Yankee series before playing Tampa again. The bullpen should be fine then to deal with this tough stretch.
SJE - Sunday, May 30 2010 @ 07:45 PM EDT (#215812) #
Do you think with the lease ending at the end of the season and the performance of any starting pitchters in Los Vegas that the Jays will look to move back to the International League. The pitchers may just decline a promotion to Vegas. Its almost like the Jays are protecting the young starter from going there.
mamboon - Sunday, May 30 2010 @ 08:38 PM EDT (#215815) #
SJE - Good question.  My guess is that the Jays will move back to the International League for AAA.  It would seem the right thing to do and get back to the midwest or mid-south US or even a de novo Canadian location nearer to their home fan base.  However, I am unfamiliar with the player development contracts the major league teams have with affiliates.  I don't know what happens with the players when the agreement runs out.  I think, I don't know, I am just guessing here...that the Jays would just do a new agreement and agree to provide players for the new AAA afiliate.  Las Vegas would move on to work with the team they sign their next agreement with.

Dave R - I do like to go to the Dunedin Stadium, also we are a short drive from Clearwater (Philly) and Tampa (Yankees).  I have to report that I have a great bias when it comes to Dunedin players.  I am a fool for Mike McDade.  He's a beast.  With forearms like Alley- Oop.  He has power from both sides of the plate.  I think he's one of the strongest hitters I've seen in minor league ball.  I hope he improves his physical conditioning, keeps his weight in check.  He's destined for the show if he does.

I have a buddy who's a photographer.  Maybe I can get him to get me some pics of the Dunedin games he goes to.  I will try to figure out how to post those, if it is allowed.

Dunedin is full of tallent this year.  Well managed and they are a contender for the league title.  Hopefully I can get to a couple - three games a week.  So, if you folks will allow me,  expect to hear alot about A-Hech and my man McDade.

ramone - Sunday, May 30 2010 @ 09:02 PM EDT (#215817) #
Love the reports on Dunedin mamboon, thanks.  Can you tell me anything about Farina?  He was mentioned in my BA handbook a year or two ago as a prospect to watch and then he was injured and when he did pitch it wasn't with great results.  Other than his second inning pitched today his numbers looks great, any idea what he throws, velocity ect.
Gerry - Sunday, May 30 2010 @ 09:17 PM EDT (#215818) #

The Jays would love to make it back to the International League but it takes two to tango.  The IL teams are interested in an affiliation that will sell tickets.  Many of them want a deal with a team that has some local following so they can sell tickets to see the future players for the locals favourite team.

Although it is the Eastern League, if the Red Sox came knocking New Hampshire would drop the Jays like a hot potato.  When the Red Sox team, Portland, comes into town the Fisher Cats sell a lot more tickets.  I remember a few years ago the Fisher Cats manager, Bill Masse, got into trouble for criticizing the fans for cheering for the visitors, Portland, and not New Hampshire.  I also remember Randy Boone telling me that he was walking off the mound last year after a clean first inning and he noticed the crowd were giving him a big ovation.  Then he realized they were cheering for John Smoltz who was making a rehab start for Portland.

So back to AAA, you need to find an IL team that is unhappy with their current major league partner or a team that is losing it's partner to a better offer.  Then you try and pitch them to partner with you.  Unfortunately the Jays have had losing records at AAA for many years now.  Hopefully Alex A's emphasis on the farm system will convince someone to sign-on expecting lots of prospects to get the fans to come see.

Gerry - Sunday, May 30 2010 @ 09:20 PM EDT (#215819) #
As far as I recall Farina has a 90-92 mph fastball and a slider.  When I saw him pitch in spring training he was pitching up in the zone and was getting hit.  I assume he is now pitching down.  He has always had a good arm.

That story on Adeiny is really encouraging. AA deserves big props for going out and getting him. There are a lot of reasons to be optimistic if you're a Jays fan.

The Edmonton Sun had an article last week discussing Edmonton's interest in a PCL franchise and specifically named Las Vegas as a target. While staying in the PCL isn't ideal, moving the Jays AAA affiliate from LV to EDM clearly would be.

Gerry RE: Farina... what you saw in spring training is what I saw today.  Had a three up three down one inning.  Brute force... two strike outs and a ground out... not many pitches that first inning he pitched.  He overpowered the batters.  The next inning he stuggled and got into some trouble... gave up a couple walks, hit, error by A-Hech.  But he still managed a K I believe. Again,  I don't think I recall him throwing many pitches today.  He's pretty efficient that way.
