Any idea what kind of odds I could get in Vegas predicting a Jays no-hitter this year?

Honestly, doesn't it seem like it's bound to happen at some point? When Romero struck out the side in the first, I, without a hint of irony, said to myself "here we go again". Alas, it died right about then but, with the exception of Eveland, I fully anticipate the possibility of a no-hitter every day now. It's a nice feeling.

In related news, a friend emailed me this morning and said "I need the jays to go on a 15 game losing streak to temper my excitement of these young guys". I couldn't agree more. I was fully prepared for 95 losses this year and a top five pick in the apparently stacked upper end of the 2011 draft. And while that is certainly still a very real possibility (like when the offense stops hitting like the '27 Yankees), this sqaud has certainly done an admirable job of silencing the "zomg, they're gonna lose 120" crowd.

In any event, I'm late getting this up and there's a game on.  Currently 2-2 in the 6th.

Whoa, no clue how I got the blue text but I also can't get it to go away.  So.....deal with it?

So, how accurate is the Cleveland stadium radar gun?  It's been showing Morrow with several pitches of 98 mph, 99 mph and even 100 mph today.  Gameday has been recording the same speeds for those pitches, although I assume they're simply using the numbers from the stadium gun.

Morrow is teasing us again.  Flashes of history-making talent, flashes of severe control problems that could still derail his career.

Wow.  That's not going to temper any excitement now, is it?

Good for Lind, too as he has been struggling pretty mightily lately.

So, Matthew... your thoughts on this afternoon's contest?

b, i think i know how to fix the blue text if you want to give me edit rights to the story.

and here i thought you were being ironic somehow about "blue" jays. i didn't get it, so never mind.

So, Matthew... your thoughts on this afternoon's contest?

Had 'em all the way.

I dunno. I wasn't able to pay attention too closely. I had the Globe and Mail scoreboard page open, but that's about it. Looks like Morrow wasn't quite at his best, but they overcame it. Lind may be coming around.

Why do you ask?

Thanks, Mick.  Have at it.

Young pitchers will break your heart. Super high side talented young pitchers will break your heart and then squeeze it to a pulp.

Morrow, Cecil and Romero - a lot of talent there. The next close wave of newbies and injury returnees is: Scrabble, Litsch, Drabek, Mills and Stewart; to be followed a year of so later by Alvarez, Jenkins and some studs from the 2010 draft.

Gotta be five keepers in there somewhere - gotta be...lots of reasons to be very, very optimistic.

Why do you ask?

Just providing a setup. Channeling my inner Ed McMahon or something.

Perez threw eleven pitches that could have provided the third out and ended the game. Even better, the Lewis double, the Hill safe-on-error, and the Lind homer all came with two strikes on the hitter.

Vulture win for Frasor.

As usual, weird strategy from the bench. McCoy pinch run for Overbay and we hand up with Bautista at first. McCoy at 3B.
Then Buck pinch hit for Molina. I suppose Buck is there to hit a homerun because getting on base is not his forte.

None of that worked, but that's moot because the 1-2-3 hitter came back to win the game, with some luck.

Good series for Snider. For a few minutes there, he was a .200 hitter.

Vulture win?  Frasor came in with the Jays behind and pitched well.  The classic vulture win:  the reliever who comes on with a 2-0 lead and two outs in the top of the ninth and two runners on, allows the runners to score, but then gets the W when the home nine rallies in the bottom of the inning.

Hmmm, I would argue a vulture win is more like one where the starter pitches 9+ shutout innings, and then they put a reliever in who quickly gets the win.

Frasor got a single out for the win. That Cito didn't bring Gregg in for the save doesn't change that.

Wow, scottt, that's awfully churlish of you.  You could just as easily argue that Frasor should have gotten a save (instead of a win) but he was deprived of the save because of the unfairness of the rules.  And it would have been a save in the toughest of circumstances: an extremely tight game, high pressure, high leverage, needing to pitch for 1.1 innings, and facing the top of the Cleveland order for the final inning.  The rules didn't permit him to get the save, but instead the rules gave him a win, which is perhaps a form of poetic justice for being denied the save.  Why object to that?

Churlish? I had to look that up.

marked by a lack of civility or graciousness? I hope not.

difficult to work with or deal with? If you says so.

I also looked "Vulture win"--in case I got the definition wrong:

In baseball, a loose term for a relief pitcher getting credited with a Win that he doesn't seem to deserve.
The thing about the Vulture Win is that the pitcher basically lucked into it. It's even worse if he gives up a ton of runs but gets the win anyway -- this happens a lot to closers who blow their save opportunities.

Vultures are not jackals, they don't steal their food. They just pick up whatever they luck into. I didn't mean it as a negative. Morrow did not last long enough to deserve the win and I hope Frasor gets several more easy wins this year.

Also, I read that  Ruiz was not available in the last series. I did not know that.

And yes, I call this one a vulture win as well. And I love it.

China fan - Sunday, May 09 2010 @ 06:18 PM EDT (#214819) #
Well, this one definitely WAS a vulture win, but I still say the last one wasn't.
