It was almost a perfect night for the Jays organization as only one affiliate failed to get in the win column.

Salt Lake 8 Las Vegas 5

Salt Lake City, UT - The 51's had a 2-0 lead after scoring in the first and fourth innings but the Angels affiliate rallied for two runs in the fourth, four runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth to run away with the win.  Las Vegas scored three in the ninth to make the final score more respectable.

Batting - Chris Aguila, J.P. Arencibia, Jeremy Reed and Jorge Padilla each had two hits while Christian Colonel had a hit and a walk.  Arencibia doubled home a run while Colonel, Jesus Merchan and Brett Wallace had RBI groundouts.  Wallace also drew a walk.  The other run came home on a wild pitch in the ninth.

Pitching - Reidier Gonzalez limited the Buzz to two runs over the first five innings but his house of cards fell apart in the sixth.  He lasted 5 1/3 innings in which he gave up six runs (four earned) on nine hits (including two homers, one by Mark Trumbo) and three walks while striking out four.  He did manage six groundouts.  Lefty Sean Henn worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings by scattering a hit and a walk while striking out a pair.  Fellow southpaw Jesse Carlson had a rough ninth by giving up a two-run homer among three hits but he did strike out a batter.

Defence - It was not a good night for the middle infield as Merchan threw one away at short and Luis Figueroa booted one at second on consecutive plays that each led to Salt Lake runs to break a 4-4 tie.  The Buzz also was 4-for-4 in the stolen base department against the Gonzalez-Arencibia battery.

New Hampshire 2 Trenton 1

Manchester, NH - Two runs in the sixth managed to stand up against a Trenton run in the eighth.

Batting - The Fisher Cats were working on their plate discipline in this one as they drew more walks than hits by a count of 6-4.  Back-to-back RBI singles by Al Quintana and Adam Loewen accounted for all the Fisher Cat scoring.  Manny Mayorson had the only two-bagger while Adam Calderone accounted for the other base knock.  Loewen, Calderone, Darin Mastroianni, David Cooper, Luis Sanchez and Jonathan Diaz also drew free passes.  Loewen also contributed with a stolen base.

Pitching - Marty McLeary spread out six hits, a walk and a wild pitch over six shutout innings while striking out a trio of Yankee wannabe bastards, er, batters.  Adrian Martin gave up an Austin Romine RBI single among two hits and a walk over two innings but he did strike out one and killed some worms with three groundouts.  Lefty Tim Collins took care of business with a one-two-three ninth inning with a strikeout to notch his first save of the year.

Defense - Luis Sanchez bobbled one at third base but he did start one of the two deuces on the night.

Dunedin 6 Daytona 4

Dunedin, FL - A six-run first for the D-Jays was all they needed against the D-Cubs, who scored once in the third and three more in the fourth.

Batting - Travis d'Arnaud doubled home the first run of the game, Sean Shoffit singled home two more and Jon Talley doubled home another.  The other two runs were gifts from the Cubs defence.  Raul Barron had three hits, Talley and Tyler Pastornicky had two apiece while Shoffit had a hit and a base on balls.  Barron and Shoffit each stole a base but Pastornicky was caught pilfering.

Pitching - Chuck Huggins could not make it to the fifth inning to earn the win.  The lefty gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk over 3 2/3 innings but only one of the runs was an "earnie" thanks to an error in the fourth.  Fellow lefty Dan DeLucia picked up the win in relief with 2 1/3 shutout innings.  He gave up just two hits while racking up a hat trick of strikeouts (like the hockey reference?).  B.J. LaMura had two K's over two scoreless innings while Matt Daly finished up with a one-hit ninth to get his fifth save.

Defence - Pastornicky mishandled a ball at short in the fourth that produced three unearned runs but did help turn a 4-6-3 double play.

Lansing 5 Fort Wayne 2

Fort Wayne, IN - A four-run fifth and one more in the sixth gave the Luggies the win on the road over their Padres counterparts.

Batting - Sean Ochinko had three of the Lugnuts seven hits and scored twice.  Balbino Fuenmayor had an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1.  Mark Sobolewski lifted a sac fly to put Lansing in the lead while Brad Glenn had a two-run single that proved to be Lansing's only hit with runners in scoring position in nine at-bats.  Kenny Wilson had a hit, a walk and a stolen base - his sixth of the year.  Lansing's last run came home after an error in left field.

Pitching - Dave "Leave It To" Sever gave up a single run over six innings while scattering four hits and three walks.  He struck out one and recorded six groundouts against nine flyouts.  Dustin Antolin gave up an unearned marker over two innings on a hit and a walk but his ERA remains 0.00.  Steven Turnbull pitched a one-hit ninth to get save number three on the year.

Fielding - Oliver Dominguez botched one at second and Kevin Nolan air mailed at third that led to an unearned run in the eight.  Glenn added an outfield assist by cutting down a runner a third in the fourth inning while Sobolewski and Ochinko teamed up for a 5-3 double play.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3.  Adam Loewen, New Hampshire

2.  Sean Ochinko, Lansing

My Kenny Wilson watch for the night.  Five plate appearances, two strikeouts, one walk, one ground ball out, one bunt single.

That's 18 k's in 47 ab's (38%), kinda high isn't it ?

It is.  He is reaching base at a great rate regardless.

He has been called out a lot, and is walking a lot too.  We don't get pitches/PA for the minor leagues, but I suspect that Wilson's would be high.  In other words, he is working the count as a leadoff hitter should, but still has some work to do on pitch recognition.

I wonder if Lugnut Fan is reading and has some observations.

I am  Mike and your assumptions would be true.  Wilson is looking at a lot of pitches this year and although his strike out rate may be a touch on the high side, I have been pretty impressed with what I have seen out of him in the lead off spot for Lansing.  I would put the over / under on pitches seen per plate appearance at six so far.  He is willing to take a walk and he is putting the ball on the ground and using his speed which is what he needs to do.  He isn't a big kid, so he isn't going to hit for much power.  I would like to see him be more consistent in his bunting however.  I have seen five games this year and I would say he has tried to bunt at least twice a game so far this year.  A ton of them just end up foul.  He looks like a more confident player than what I saw last year.  The one that concerns me the most on the Lansing team is Fuenmayor.  That kid is thinking way to much at the plate this year if you ask me and he gets fooled on almost everything so far in the ealy season.

LugnutFan ... how is Eric Eiland looking ?
Mike Green - Wednesday, April 21 2010 @ 02:59 PM EDT (#213951) #
Thanks very much for the first-hand report, LF.  Fouling off a lot of bunt attempts would also lead to a few more strikeouts, too.  A 20 year old speedy CF without much power ought to be working on his bunting ability in Lansing; it might be a little painful to watch as a spectator, but it will serve him well in the long run.

Fuenmayor's case sounds similar to what's happening to Snider right now with the big boys.

Eric Eiland looks ok. He isnt overly impressive right now, but we will see how he improves as the season progresses.

I would agree with Fuenmayor and Snider comparison at this point. He needs a good 10 day stretch or so to get some confidence.
