More depth is good. SS is now getting pretty clogged up in the lower minors. One of Pastornicky, Hech and Jackson should be able to work out.

How long does extended spring training last?

As far as I know (not far actually!), it usually runs up to the start of the short-season minor league season in late June.

AH is expected to start in Dunedin according to Bastian.

I wonder if they will send one of Jackson/Pastornicky/Tolisano down to Lansing or have them play a little outfield..

AA confirmed on the fan he'll start in FSL sometime in May and look to have him in Double A to end the year.  http://www.fan590.com/media.jsp?content=20100413_172751_7052

Pastornicky is like 2 for 26 so far or some such. if he doesn't hit his stride soon, my guess is when AH! is ready, Pastornicky will drop back to Lansing (which might be why it's Jackson playing 2B so much)

That would crowd Goins for a bit but my guess is that if he acclimates ok, Adeiny will be in NH no later than the Hi-A al-star break (which is June 11-13) which is a little over 8 weeks from today.

Jesse Carlson appears to be rounding into form after another nice performance tonight, a hit and 2 Ks over 1.2ip. That makes 3 scoreless appearances in Las Vegas, but unfortunately he has an underworked, healthy bullpen in his way. It will be interesting to see if the Jays bring him up soon at the expense of an Accardo or Valdez or if they wait it out until someone is either really bad or hurt.

Wow, AA has really gone out there and did what JP couldn't. He now has his SS prospect. What an outstanding beginning to his tenure.

Richard Griffin wrote a column for today's paper suggest Romero may have staked an early claim to the title of staff ace and suggesting things look quite bright for the young left-hander.

He makes the inevitable mention of Tulowitzki, recalling that the the name "used to be a running joke about the Jays' drafting woes" but it isn't that way anymore. Of course, there's no mention of the fact that Griffin himself was often one who made that comparison.

Wow, AA has really gone out there and did what JP couldn't. He now has his SS prospect.

JP had a few shortstop prospects: Russ Adams, Aaron Hill, Justin Jackson (who was hot stuff just a year ago). I think the Hechavarria signing is great, but he's yet to play shortstop in the majors, or even swing a bat against pro pitching.

I continue to not be able to get over how similar Hechavarria's name is to a certain Baltimore catcher of the distant past. First and last names.

Romero is really looking good so far. I like how he stated in the spring that he wanted the opening day start - it is easy to avoid questions and give rote answers 'it would be an honour but I doubt I'll get it' or something like that. He appears to really want to be the ace and feels he should be.

It would be nice. I like how Dave Stieb caught the home run given up by Halladay that prevented his no-no in his first year, and would love it if Halladay got to tutor the next great ace. Still, the odds are slim at this stage for Romero to get 100+ wins as a Jay along with ERA titles, Cy Young awards (or deserving them), and various people calling him the best in baseball.

Its easy to forget the gap between Stieb and Halladay, but there was some very good years out of Pat Hentgen in between those two. I'll definitely "settle" for Romero becoming the next Hentgen.
John Northey - Wednesday, April 14 2010 @ 04:59 PM EDT (#213634) #
Agreed. I was going to mention Hentgen but generally when someone asks who the greatest home-grown Jay pitchers are Stieb & Halladay are the ones to come up with the odd person tossing in Key. Funny to think the leader for Wins by a product of the Jays system is David Wells.

As for 100+ wins as a Jay you get Stieb, Halladay, Clancy, Key, and Hentgen. The top 10 is reached with just 51 wins, Romero is currently tied for 47th and a 13 win season would get him up to 25th although Marcum will hit that first (he just needs two more wins).
