New Hampshire got off to a hot start when Darin Mastroianni led off the season with a home run and before Kyle Drabek reached the mound he had a four run lead.  On the other hand Clearwater threw a perfect game against Dunedin for six innings.  New Hampshire went on to win while Dunedin were well beaten.

Lansing had four RBI's from Ryan Schimpf and home runs from 2009 draftees Schimpf and Ryan Goins but lost in extra innings.   Las Vegas won with a shutout, Brad Mills and the bullpen held Salt Lake to three hits.

Bullpens were generally strong on Thursday, the Fisher Cats got four innings of perfect relief from Luis Perez and Danny Farquhar.  The Lugnuts also got four innings of perfect relief from Nestor Molina and Dustin Antolin but they lost the game in the sixth inning of relief.  Las Vegas got three innings of shutout relief to cement their win.

Salt Lake 0  Las Vegas 2

Brad Mills was delaing in his first start of the year, he pitched six shutout innings with nine K's, no walks and only two hits allowed.  He was ably backed up by the bullpen, Sean Henn, David Purcey and Rommie Lewis each pitched a shutout inning in relief.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.  Jeremy Reed and Jesus Merchan singled to lead off the inning.  The newest Jay, Christian Colonel delivered a one-out RBI single to put the 51's ahead, and Jorge Padilla followed with a sac fly.

Las Vegas had eight hits, all singles, three by Merchan.

New Hampshire 5  New Britain 4

New Hampshire got off to a hot start scoring four runs in the top of the first.  Darin Mastroianni got it started with a lead-off home run.  Calix Crabbe signled and scored on a one-out double from Brad Emaus.  Eric Thames and Adam Loewen walked around a ground out to load the bases.  Brian Jeroloman singled to drive in two runs but got thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.  Kyle Drabek took the mound for the Fisher-Cats and surrendered half the lead on a two run home run.  Drabek then settled down and pitched three hitless innings.

Menawhile the Fisher Cats twice had runners on second and third with no-one out and were unable to score.  That opened the door to the Rock Cats to tie the game in the fifth with two singles a wild pitch a ground out and a passed ball.  In the top of the sixth Calix Crabbe walked with two outs and stole second.  A Rock Cat error moved Crabbe to third and Emaus came through again with an RBI single.

Luis Perez, who will be the fifth starter, pitched three perfect innings with five K's.  Danny Farquhar added a perfect ninth for the save.

The Fisher Cats outhit the Rock Cats 11-4.  Every starter, other than Loewen, had a hit.  Emaus was 3-5 with two RBI's.  Jeroloman had two hits and 2 ribbies.  Drabek's line was 5 IP, 4H, 2BB, 8K, 3ER.

Clearwater 10 Dunedin 2

Clearwater pitchers had a perfect game going six and a third innings.  At that point Brad McElroy struck out but reached first on a wild pitch.  New Jay Travis D'Arnaud followed with a two run home run to break the drought.

However the Jays were down 8-0 before the home run.  Ryan Page got the start for the Jays and gave up five runs.  He was followed by Chad Beck who allowed two runs and Boomer Potts who gave up one.  Frank Gailey pitched the ninth and gave up two more.

Dunedin finished with three hits, other than the home run Mike McDade had a double and Justin Jackson an infield single.  Jackson played second base, Tolisano third and Pastornicky short.  It will be interesting to see how those positions change over the next week or two.

Lansing 5 Dayton 6 - 11 innings

Ryan Goins got the first run of the season with a lead-off home run in the second inning.  Starting pitcher Ryan Shopshire gave back three runs in the bottom of the second but the Lugnuts halved the gap with a run in the third.  Kenny Wilson led off with a double and Ryan Schimpf singled him home.  Shopshire gave up three more runs in the fifth which finished his night with the Lugnuts trialing 5-2.  But in the sixth Eric Eiland led off with a single, Wilson was hit by a pitch and Schimpf hit a three run home run.

The bullpen kicked in with some stellar relief, Nestor Molina and Dustin Antolin pitched two shutout innings each but Evan Crawford, coming back from missing 2009, gave up the winning run in the eleventh.

Eric Eiland went 3-5 to lead the Lugnuts, Schimpf had two hits and four RBI's, Wilson had a hit, two walks and was hit by a pitch.

Three Stars

3rd star - Ryan Schimpf
2nd star - Brad Mills
1st star - Brad Emaus

6ip 2h 0r 0bb 9k 1hbp is a great season debut for the junkballing Mills. Still giving up a ton of fly balls though, which probably won't play well in the PCL.

in progress in the bottom of the sixth, Doparick just picked up the 51's fifth hit and there are two on with one out for JPA...full count...grounded to short, double play - still no score..

Meanwhile, less heralded Brad Mills matched him with six scoreless innings, allowing 2 singles, no walks, and nine K's...but he hit 90 pitchs and Sean Henn starts the seventh

The 51's score 2 in the 7th after singles from Jeremy Reed and Jesus Merchan ~ Christian Colonel scored Reed on a single and Jorge Padilla scored Merchan on a sac fly.

The batting order in the Dunedin game was also interesting- Pastornicky led off while Jackson hit ninth.  Keeping the heat as low as possible for Jackson is a wise move, after last season's offensive struggles.

Welcome back to the MLUs.

Gerry, do you know if Kenny Wilson is switch-hitting?  There was talk of converting him.

Gerry - Friday, April 09 2010 @ 11:19 AM EDT (#213351) #
Yes he is still switch hitting.  It is a valuable skill so usually teams have the player stick with it as long as possible.

This report is very good. Thanks. The link to the Vegas boxscore is handy as well.  I may not thank you every time, but I'll be reading.

Baseball America has their 10 stars of opening day in the minors and talk about our own Brad Mills
China fan - Friday, April 09 2010 @ 02:13 PM EDT (#213365) #

Brad Mills is actually on an amazing hot streak.  He hasn't allowed a single run in his past 14 innings, allowing just 4 hits in that span.  And he has pitched shut-outs in three of his past four starts, each lasting 6 to 8 innings.   In two of those last four starts, he struck out a total of 20 batters in 13 innings -- pretty darn good.  Now for the small technical footnote:  three of those last four starts were June and July of 2009, just before his season was ended by injury.  So when I talk about his "hot streak", it's technically true, but it comprises his first game of 2010 and his final three games of 2009.....

Still, no matter how many caveats you want to include about sample size and injury, those last 4 starts have been superb and they bode very well for his future.  Mills has been underestimated and neglected by all the pundits this year -- maybe because he never seems very impressive with his junky-looking stuff and his high-80s velocity, and anyway he is 25 years old by now.  Still, I think he has to be included in any list of the top pitching prospects on the Jays.  Remember that he almost made the team in spring training of last year.  With more experience and confidence, he could be an early call-up by the Jays this year -- maybe even ahead of the flashier younger prospects.

Good point about Mills, here are a couple more.  Mills is a four year student and qualified with an engineering degree so he is smart.  Last season part of his problem was that his fastball location was high.  He had been able to get away with a higher fastball in the minors because it set up his curve which started high and dropped.  But the high fastballs didn't fly (or flew too far) in the majors.  When I was in Florida I didn't see Mills pitch but I heard he was now keeping his fastball lower in the zone which should make him more effective for the big leagues.

Finally don't forget Cito was impressed by Mills this spring, I believe Cito said Mills was like a different pitcher.

In BA's expert assessment, the Brad Mills six-inning shutout was the best performance by any pitcher in the minors yesterday.  Yet the Box ranked him as merely the 2nd star of the day in the Jays system!  I guess that's what happens when the Jays improve their minor-league system -- there can be more than one excellent performance in the farm system on any given night.   Remember all those days in 2009 when it was hard to find 3 genuine stars in the entire system?

I don't really get why a couple people have referred to Mills as a junkball pitcher.

Is it because his fastball sits between 86 to 90?... If that's the reasoning, then I guess we should throw Marcum and Rzepcynski in the same category...

I guess I don't like the label, because when I think of a junkballer, I think of  an old guy who has lost his velocity and relies on a variety of offspeed pitches to get by...

Mills has a shot at being a good major league pitcher and I wouldn't refer to his curveball as junk, so I don't really understand the label...

I wasn't impressed at all with Mills when he was recalled briefly last season - he seemed like soft-tossing, er, junkballer. On the other hand, his minor league stats are brilliant (after a mediocre college career, which is kind of weird). Including yesterday's start, he's posted a 15-5 record, 1.96 ERA, 171.1 IP, 131 H, 7 HR allowed, 58 BB, 189 K in the minors, which is ridiculously good. So he must be doing something right. The question is, can he do the same thing to big-league hitters? Another potentially interesting storyline for 2010.

I think Mills gets one more shot this year at the big league level. There are just too many other younger, more ballyhooed pitching prospects in the Jays system to earn him much more than that. I am rooting for him though as he seems to be a likeable character.

Let's not forget too that Mills had to make BOTH of his starts against the Phillies. Facing Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jayson Werth is one helluva challenge as a Major League audition.

More good pitching in Vegas tonight. Ray Gonzalez gave up 2 earned over six, Roenicke pitched two shutout innings and Carlson finished it with a shutout inning of his own. They combined for 8 strikeout and 0 walks.

On the hitting side, the team racked up 13 hits, 3 doubles and the rest singles

New Hampshire was rained out

Dunedin fell 3-0, Andrew Lebel gae up three runs in 3 and a third before being pulled, that was all the scoring that would occur.

d'Arnoud, McDade, Tolisano, Ramirez and McElroy each singled once.

Lansing fell 4-3 in 12 innings. Not much to talk about here. Ochinko and Eiland doubled. it's only two games but both Eiland and Wilson seem to be off to a better start than in years past.
