Every once in a while, you see a story that reminds you -- while the Gold Gloves and Silver Sluggers certainly would be nice-to-haves, sometimes the face of the franchise finds itself staring into the soulful eyes of a child. From today's Fort Worth Star-Telegram ...
Gillespie, who also works with Mission Arlington, said there are 1,200
homeless children in Arlington alone and that it is nice to give these
kids a chance to have something nice.
That is a ridiculous number. I don't want to know the stats here in Toronto.

I read in an earlier thread that you are considering a change to your site's banner.

Cudos to VW for extending a hand to these kids and for trying to make a difference in their lives. Some of us perhaps allow "the contract" to influence our evaluations of his play by comping 'bang for the dollar' with other players' contracts and performance when we should just applaude him for some of the intangibles and leadership that he brings to the team. Also, what does it say about us when his truly positive actions can only garner four comments of support (actually two) ? We all have our bandwagons but his efforts deserve more than just passive observation . We should all just get off our hands and offer him our encouragement and give him some well deserved cheers. Good for you Vernon !

Vernon has produced 2.1 WAR over the last 3 seasons, that's what influences my evaluations. He stinks.

So since we can't applaud him for what he's doing on the field, let's make stuff up and pretend like he's contributing off of it, right?
It's great that Vernon is helping homeless kids. If he wasn't giving back to his local community on a 23m salary he'd be nothing short of an ass. I apologize that the Box didn't jump for joy when they read this article.

Our reviews of Roy Halladay's pitching greatness probably outnumbered our praise for his considerable off-field charitable work by at least 10-1.
