Chris Coghlan of the Florida Marlins may be pouring a cocktail or two today as he wins the National League Rookie of the Year award.

The 24 year-old Coghlan beat out Phillies lefty J.A. Happ by just 11 points for top NL rookie honours.  Rounding out the top five were Atlanta pitcher Tommy Hanson, Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen (Baseball America's Rookie of the Year) and Brewers infielder Casey McGehee.

Coghlan batted .321/.390/.460 with 31 doubles, six triples, nine homers and 47 RBI while stealing eight bases and scoring 84 runs.  The left-handed hitter from Port Harbor, Florida had his way with the Jays during their interleague series at Rogers Centre in June.  He went 7-for-14 with three doubles, two walks and an RBI to help the Fish complete a three-game sweep.

FWIW, Fangraphs WAR has McCutchen as the easy RoY, with Hanson second.  Coghlan was, according to UZR, a below average fielder, and McCutchen was average.

Nice photo. The man had two chances as a second baseman and you are showing one of them. He had no assists so I guess he didn't turn the DP.

Presumably he'll be returning to second base once Uggla is moved, either to a new team or third base (or both).

Hold the fort!

Coghlan's only game at second base was against Colorado. Why are we seeing Glaus? The photo couldn't have been a 2009 spring training game because Glaus was out, nursing his off-season surgery. Was the photo from a 2008 spring training game?

UZR shouldn't be considered a factor for rookie of the year.  It is best used as an evaluation technique when three years of data are available, not one or less.  If you are going to consider defensive contribution in evaluating a rookie's performance, I'd suggest sticking to scouting reports, the defensive spectrum and perhaps minor league reputation.

It was during spring training - March 2, 2008 to be specific.

Coghlan was a left-fielder in his rookie year, after being an infielder in the minors. It wouldn't be shocking if he was somewhat below average.  McCutchen is a well-regarded centerfielder, whose UZR is about what you would expect in his rookie season.  While the WAR and UZR ought to be used with caution, the known objective and subjective circumstances happen to be consonant with the positional and defence adjustments necessary for McCutchen to have provided significantly more value in 2009 than Coghlan.
