According to reports, Oakland A's relief pitcher Andrew Bailey is the American League Rookie of the Year, receiving 13 of 28 first-place votes and 88 points. Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus was the runner-up with 65 points, one ahead of Detroit Tigers RHSP Rick Porcello.

I think they got the top three right, but frankly, I would have gone Andrus-Porcello-Bailey or even Porcello-Andrus-Bailey. Your thoughts, noble Bauxites?

... and in Jays news Ricky Romero got zero votes. I'd say it doesn't matter but after reading his Baseball Prospectus interview, it sounds like he would really have liked at least a single vote.

I thought the ROY would be either Porcello or Andrus with any toss up votes going to the SS over a P. I thought about Bailey for a second but I couldn't see a RP getting the award. Needless to say, I've forgotten about Huston Street already.

Lesson learned: never doubt the power of the SV in baseball reporters minds.

Needless to say, I've forgotten about Huston Street already.

The closer for a playoff team. 35 saves against 2 blown saves. A 3.06 ERA in Coors Field. A WHIP under 1.00. Over a strikeout an inning.

He's no Rivera, but your standards are harsh.

You could make a strong case that Bailey was the 3rd best reliever in the AL last year.  Given that most of his innings came in high leverage situations I think they got this one right.   Forget the saves, great era, great k ration and he did this in 83 and a third innings pitched, not your typical 60 inning closer.

WAR has it Niemann, Andrus, Romero, Bailey, Beckham, Purcello.  WAR doesn't account for leverage.  Any of the first four would have been reasonable choices, as they would be within spitting distance of each other.  Beckham is the one with the brightest future, in my opinion, but that's a whole other question.

And I would have really liked if Romero didn't fall apart after the All Star break. He had a 5.54era with 72:50 k:bb, and opponents hit .312/.403/.426.

He meant that he forgot about Street winning the award, not that Street exists.

Brett Anderson deserved more support too.

Actually Anderson was 1st in AL rookie pitching WAR. Niemann was 3.2 and Anderson was 3.8.

They got the wrong guy from Oakland.
