Evil Empire manager Joe Girardi is looking to change his uniform number from 27 to 28.  My suggestion to him is to 86 this idea.

In all fairness, Girardi did bail someone out of a jam recently.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous for managers and coaches to have numbers to begin with.  They're usually wearing team-issued windbreakers or fleece sweaters over their jerseys anyway.  You'd never know that former Jays manager John Gibbons used to wear number five.  The last player to wear it was Chris Woodward.

In other news......free agency filing season is underway, Bobby Abreu re-signs with the Halos and the Royals may or may not have traded honourary Canadian Mark Teahen to the White Sox.

No word yet on the John Halama Lama Ding Dong Dominican adventure.  Test your knowledge of Spanish here.

Not sure where to Put(z) this but:

I wouldn't mind the Jays taking a chance on Putz as a reclamation project. The 'pen needs help. His K rate fell, but that could bounce back as he gets further from the arm problems. Putz dominance in 2007 is difficult to forget.

...oh and yes, I remember the Kerry Ligtenberg project. Projects like these can work out terribly, but throw a defence first SS out there and get Putz to throw more splitters and fewer sliders. Could work out, as long as he comes cheap.

C'mon Cap'n Joe, change that number to 35 and tell Hank that just means you need (only) another eight or nine years in the contract  ...

Marcus Thames intrigues me as a platoon partner for Overbay and Snider. Between Thames, Bautista, Overbay, and Snider you might actually receive above average offense from your LF/1B spots, something that has been sorely lacking on this team for a few years.

Thames will be 33 in June, and is a significantly below average defender in LF.  Even against lefties, he doesn't reach base enough to make him a good platoon OF.

We'll see what Anthopoulos says, but assuming that the club isn't aiming to contend in 2010, it makes sense to move Lind to first base, Snider to DH and Encarnacion to left.  Lyle Overbay should be movin' on.

I was never thinking of playing him in the OF, and I purposely included Bautista in my post for that very reason.
