Take me away, I don't mind
But you better promise me, I'll be back in time

He's been reactivated in time for the start of the World Series and he can add this to the list of his accomplishments - a starring role in the Batter's Box POTD!

The "Menasha Masher", Eric Hinske, has been added to the New York Yankees World Series roster.  The former Blue Jay picked up a World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox in 2007 but he went down swinging for the final out of last season's Winter, er, Fall Classic as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.  Hinske struck out against Brad Lidge and the defending World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies and there's a good chance those two may meet again over the next week or so.

Looks like he ripped a double on that pitch to the left-centre gap.

Actually, Hinske was 0-for-3 in this game with a walk.  That was the night Roy Halladay pitched a complete game two-hitter.

Wow, so Hinske's played in three consecutive Series' with three different AL East teams? I doubt that's ever been done before.

I remember Don Baylor doing something like that... checks baseball reference... 86 Boston, 87 Minnesota, 88 Oakland - he got one ring in the middle of it.  So 1 year in the AL East then 2 in the AL West.  Hinske is a bit more impressive with a larger league and staying in one division.  So does this mean we should bring him back to Toronto this offseason?  :)

If the Yankees win the World Series, Hinske will have two rings, Kevin Cash(!) will have two rings, with Chad Gaudin and Josh Towers also getting hardware before the Blue Jays.

I think I heard Roy Halladay sigh.

Hinske waddles out of the batter's box flashing that #14 and somewhere, Lou Piniella sighs deeply, recalling the days HE was the slow guy wearing that pinstriped number ...

Wow. Lee was fantastic. Great acquisition for the Phils. Dodgers should have ponied up for Halladay.

Dirk Hayhurst writes a regular column for his hometown paper in Canton Ohio & is also pushing his soon to be released book via Twitter.

The recent column that I've linked gives an interesting story of a locker room exchange with a veteran that many of us fans never get a privilege of knowing about.  Why I do I think the veteran he spoke to was Kevin Millar?

Yeah, Boston gets blown out for lack of an ace performance (Dice-K is a #3 at best), by the Angels. The Angels find that Kazmir wasn't quite what they'd hoped for in the post-season, and fall to the Yanks. The Dodgers throw Kuroda up there in the NLCS, and he's hammered - because after Kershaw, they find it hard to really trust Billingsley, or Wolf.

Then Philly demonstrates that stealing Cliff Lee was a really, really good move, to open the World Series.

To me, all this can only be good for Roy-related leverage this off-season.

Had to check that game for Dirk.  He faced 4 hitters, 2 hits, a walk, an out.  Ugh.  Camp bailed him out though so no runs allowed.  It was the first batter he faced that the play happened on, he then gave up a double then struck out a guy before an intentional walk ended his night.

Millar did pinch hit a bit later in the game as did Bautista. Inglett hit earlier and the backup catcher (Chavez) wasn't used that game leaving just one offensive slot open.  Snider was in AAA at the time, and digging through the roster it looks like it was Russ Adams.  So we can safely eliminate Inglett and Adams as neither has enough ML experience.  Chavez has played in 11 different seasons but has just 4 1/2 years before 2009 in service time.  Bautista has just 6.  Millar though does have 12 seasons (over 10 years service time).

What is kind of funny though is that Millar does _not_ qualify for the pension (10 years = full pension which is around $175k a year, whatever the maximum allowed by US pension laws is).  You have to be a member of the union for that and since he was a scab back in '95 he doesn't get to be a member.  I figure that is at least part of what Hayhurst is talking about when he mentions that the vet has '10 years in the show'.

After reading it though you gotta hope Millar does go into coaching as it was sound advise.

Hayhurst is a better writer than most sportswriters.
