The post-season is now upon us, and I have to figure out who I'm going to cheer for....

I suppose there are reasons to cheer for or against everybody, no? I wonder if I can think of them...

It's also a certainty that actually watching the games will determine who I end up cheering for. It always does. But for now, let me provisionally seed my rooting interest in the last guys still standing:

8. New York. - Evil. Can't actually think of a reason to cheer for them...

7. Boston. Also evil. Again, my imagination seems to be failing me here...

6. Philadelphia. Come on, they won it last year. They booed Mike Schmidt!

5. St. Louis. And they won it just three years ago. And Tony LaRussa (whose sins are certainly greater than those of Alex Rodriguez or Manny Ramirez) has been irritating me for decades now...

4. Colorado. Meh.  I just don't like them very much. Don't know why... no good reason at all.

3. Los Angeles Angels. On the one hand, they did win one of these this very decade. But on the other hand, they're a good team, an appealing story and an easy bunch  to root for. I'm just afraid that the way the media is certain to go on and on about the Adenhart tragedy is going to leave me throwing up in my mouth...

2. Los Angeles Dodgers. It's been 20 years since the Dodgers even played in a World Series, and the prospect of Joe Torre and Manny Ramirez socking it to the Yankees.... it gives me goosebumps!

1. Minnesota. What's not to like? How about the prospect of Joe Mauer staking his claim as the very best baseball player in the whole damn world? Albert's great, I know - but this guy's a catcher. And he plays in the major league...

I'm a Red Sox and Yanks fan, so I'll be happy with either team winning. If either of these 2 teams can't pull it off, I wouldn't mind seeing the Twins win it just so it would silence the people that love to bitch and complain about big payroll teams winning.

I'm sure Fox is praying for a New York/LA World Series.

See, there's my only reservation about cheering for the Twins! I want to preserve my right to bitch!

But I'm not too worried about that actually coming to pass.

On one side, I don't want to see Boston or New York win. On the other side if they roll off like 5 or 6 WS in a row, MLB will have to fix the situation. I don't want to see the Jays, Baltimore and Tampa being absolutely abused by MLB for the sake of the rest of the teams.

I'm okay cheering for the Angels, Phillies or Dodgers. The rest of them...bleh.

Colorado and Minnesota are the ones I'm cheering.  Outside of them though.... bleck.
  • NYY and Boston are, as stated, evil.
  • LAA and LAD are unappealing to me, but I don't mind if either wins although I'd prefer not the Dodgers as we'd be buried in 'Joe Torre is a baseball managing god' again.
  • St Louis I detest as long as TLR (I didn't know about steroids, although I am the smartest man in any room and never make mistakes) is running them.
  • That leaves Philly who won it all last year and who I feel 'blah' about - neither good nor bad.
So Colorado and Minny (smaller markets, fun fan bases) with backups being Philly/LAA.  Then comes Dodgers, followed by 'what a horrible playoff series'.

I don't begrudge the Yankees the occasional championship, although I've still got a few years to go on my "Yankees won't win the Series again for ten years" prediction, so obviously I can't cheer for them. And I'm sick of the Red Sox.

The Twins are my second-favourite AL team, though, so there's no problem like there would have been if Detroit had won. It's okay with me if Detroit never wins another game.

I don'i like TLR, so I would normally root against St. louis, but if the dodgers loose in the 1st round, they may be more apt to make a

stronger pitch for Doc. I would also say that Carpenter/Wainwright are the best 1/2 punch in the playoffs.

Gotta go with the Angels, in light of what they had to endure to begin the year.  A model organization, I'd say.

7 and 7A.  New York/Boston - I hope Posada gets plunked and Papelbon takes a liner off the shin!

6.  Philadelphia - They won it last year, they had their fun!  (As noted in the thread!)

5.  St. Louis - They won it three years ago, they had their fun! (Also as noted in the thread!)

4.  Los Angeles - Despite Blue Monday, I'd be okay with them knocking off the Cards.

3.  Colorado - Rocktober in the World Series again, but hopefully they'll be more competitive.

2.  Minnesota - They're a plucky bunch.  They make Underdog seem like an underdog by comparison.  I'd love to see them beat the Yanks this time around!

1.  Los Angeles - You have to root for them after the way they honoured the late Nick Adenhart during their A.L. West celebration.

I'm with #2 which isn't too far from Magpie's list.  I don't have the same "meh" about the Rockies that Magpie does.

I'm cheering for:
8. Boston - won twice this decade already, that's plenty. Oh, and they've gone from lovable-types to annoying. The Sox and their fans need a few years in the wilderness again to remember what it is like.
7. Angels – I’m sick of this team already. Win 90-100 games each year while divisional rivals take turns almost being a threat. One of the worst things in terms of competitive imbalance is that the AL West has 4 teams, everyone else has 5 (except 6 in the NL Central). Teams aside, that just annoys me every year. Yeah, the first round series here, I’m hoping for injuries.

6. Phillies – Something about them bugs me, and they won last year.

5. Los Angeles Dodgers – Hard to cheer for a team that mailed it in for two months, although they should be well rested.

4. St. Louis – Meh. Rotation studs and Pujols acknowledged, I don’t see why everyone thinks they will make the series. Most of the lineup sucks, with Holliday providing a second great hitter (for two months at least), but not much else. They certainly could make it, but I don't think they are favourites.

3. Yankees – I’m surprised to see them this high too, but frustration with their perennial excellence aside, they don’t seem as hate-able as previous years. And they missed the playoffs last year, unlike two other AL entrants. So they're practically cinderella.

2. Twins – go underdogs! Although I can’t see that pitching lasting against the Yankees, you never know. The downside of the Twins is they are a reminder of what is required in their division to contend – not much.

1. Rockies! Go Rockies. Downside – the terrible “rocktober” thing. Upside – young team, old vet still providing useful contributions (Helton), a fun stadium that I’ve been to, and generally not having many players I don’t like. Except Giambi.

Am I the only one who wants the Phils to repeat?  I actually like this team (what's not to like about Ryan Howard?) and Philadelphia as a city I can get behind as an underdog (unlike NYC, Boston, LA, & LA.)  Plus I predicted them to repeat by beating the Yanks in the WS at the beginning of the season and I'd kind of like to be right about that.  A sweep would be really fantastic. I hate the Yanks, (what is there to like about Derek Jeter?)

if they roll off like 5 or 6 WS in a row, MLB will have to fix the situation
You mean like they did when the Yankees won that many in the 1940s, 1950s and nearly in the 1990s? MLB would LOVE to see the Yankees re-establish the dynasty.

What is there to like about Derek Jeter?
Well, obviously, that's merely a rant. But let's see ... a .300+ hitter on his way to 3500+ career hits, with excellent speed, good power and now (as opposed to earlier) a genuinely above-average glove? At shortstop, wearing the NYY "C" and looking for his fifth World Series ring? Lots to hate there. Just tons ...

I was cheering for the Twins, but now that they've lost I'll have to cheer for the Angels. There is no way I could ever pull for the Yankees.
