David Cooper had a big night, three hits including a two run game winning home run in the ninth inning.  Lansing won in extra innings, or rather South Bend lost it as the Lugnuts last five runs were unearned.  The GCL Jays won behind a three hitter.  Las Vegas, Dunedin and Auburn each lost.

Las Vegas 4  Iowa 5

Las Vegas jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Howie Clark doubled, Travis Snider walked, Brian Dopirak singled in one run and a JP Arencibia singled scored the second run.  Iowa fought back against starter Davis Romero who gave up three runs over six innings.  Las Vegas tied the game in the sixth, Arencibia singled to drive in his second run of the game.  Rommie Lewis replaced Romero and gave up two runs, one on a bases loaded walk.  Las Vegas had a chance in the eighth inning, Snider and Dopirak singled with one out.  Arencibia made the second out but Kyle Phillips singled in a run to make it a one run game.  However Jason Lane flew out to end the threat and the 51's went out 1-2-3 in the ninth.  Casey Janssen pitched a three up, three down, eighth.

Las Vegas outhit Iowa 11-9, Dopirak, Snider, Arencibia and Clark had two hits each.

New Hampshire 5  Bowie 4

Brandon Erbe pitched eight innings of no-hit ball against New Hampshire last week, in this game the Fisher Cats got off the mark early.  In the first inning back-to-back doubles by David Cooper and Adam Calderone put New Hampshire up 2-0.  However in the bottom of the first Bowie went back-toback with home runs to tie the score off Adrian Martin.  Martin then settled down and pitched six innings with just the two runs allowed.  Erbe pitched just four innings and the Fisher Cats went ahead off a reliever in the fifth.  Cooper led off with a single and later scored on a single by Darin Mastroianni.

The score was 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Hensley came out of the bullpen.  The first three hitters went walk, hit by pitch and a two RBI double with the runner thrown out at third, and New Hampshire trailed 4-3.  Bowie recorded the first two outs of the ninth but then Brad Emaus singled and David Cooper hit a go-ahead home run, his seventh, to put New Hampshire up 5-4.

Leon Boyd, who lost last nights game, came on for the save which he recorded despite putting two runners on base.

Cooper was 3-5 with 3 RBI's.

Dunedin 2  Brevard County 8

Vincent Bongiovanni had one of his worst starts of the year, he gave up four runs in the first and three more in the sixth.  Dunedin had eight hits and could only score two runs.  They scored their two runs in the fifth inning with half of their hits.  Kevin Ahrens led off with a single, Adam Loewen doubled to put two runners on.  With one out Sean Shoffit singled in one run, Brad McElroy then doubled in Loewen but Shoffit was thrown out at home on the play.  Dunedin had only one hit the rest of the game.

McElroy, Ahrens and Manny Rodriguez had two hits each.

Lansing 8  South Bend 6  - 10 innings

Lansing trailed 6-3 in the eighth inning when they tied the game.  A single by Mark Sobolewski and a double by Balbino Fuenmayor  put two runners on with two out.  An error by the shortstop on a hit by Kenny Wilson allowed one run to score.   Wilson then stole second and the catcher threw the ball into the outfield which let Fuenmayor and Wilson to score and tie the game.

In the tenth Sobolewski led off with a walk and Jon Talley bunted but the pitcher threw the ball away letting Sobolewski score and putting Talley on third.  With one out Wilson singled to give Lansing a two run lead.  In the bottom of the tenth closer Matt Daly put the first two hitters on base but he retired the next three for the save.

Joel Carreno started and pitched six innings, he gave up 12 hits and six runs.

Talley, Fuenmayor and Wilson had three hits each.   South Bend made five errors leading to five unearned runs.

Auburn 2  Staten Island 3

Dave Sever started and pitched six shutout innings giving up three hits.  Austin Armstrong relieved Sever and gave up a three run home run.  Auburn had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth on singles by Ryan Schimpf, Sean Ochinko and Yan Gomes.  Auburn got the first two hitters in the ninth on base with a single and a walk, and moved them over with a sac bunt, but only one run could score leaving the tying run on third to end the game.

Yan Gomes and Karim Turkamani had two hits each.

Any word on when Jenkins will be joining [presumably Auburn]?
Gerry - Wednesday, August 12 2009 @ 11:38 PM EDT (#204642) #
Assuming Jenkins hasn't pitched all summer it will take him a few weeks to get into shape to pitch in a game.  He could see a few relief innings in the GCL, or Auburn, likely not until the last week of the season.  Most of his work will be in the instructional league.

He could get some work in the AFL or Hawian Winter League right?

Travis Snider :

31 days of service prior to 2009
+
47 days of service time 2009 (April 6th - May 23rd demotion)
=
78 MLB days
+
September (30 days) callup + 4 days into October = 34 days
=
112 MLB days (assuming the inevitable Sept. callup)

That means if they called him up for Friday the 14th, with 18 days left in August, he'd amass 130 MLB days by the end of the season.

Why is that relevant? In 2008 and 2009, the most inexperienced Super 2 (Tayor Buchholz) had 2.140 of MLB service time. If you go back to include 2007, there were a bunch in the 2.130s, and the lowest was 2.130 (Alex Rios!, Randy Flores, and Antonio Perez).

If the Toronto Blue Jays front office is doing their homework, Snider should be up this weekend. Then again, they could be one step ahead of me and counting up the service time of all the relevant players to make an even more informed decision, but it certainly appears as if they are well past the comfort zone with Snider judging from the last couple of seasons. At this point keeping him down now would only benefit if in 2010 and 2011 he doesn't log full MLB seasons.

Accardo sent down, which is strange? He was pitching well I thought. According to Bastain's twitter they want to look at someone else...perhaps Zach Stewart?

That does seem like a strange move.  Carlson must have options left, correct?   Same with League?   Accardo and Frasor are pretty much the only relievers I'm happy to see (and sometimes Tallet)

Carlson must have options left, correct?

I should have. But they already used one for Accordo this year, so the move was free and they get to keep them with the other guys.

And I'm not sure whether there might be a service time thing as well. He had 3 yrs and 88 days before this season. I don't know how many days he spent on the major leaque roster, but sending him down could be enough to delay FA by a year. But then again is he really so valuable that this is a concern?
Thomas - Thursday, August 13 2009 @ 02:08 PM EDT (#204664) #
Accardo reportedly didn't take his last demotion very well (the one where he was sent down for a day and then recalled when Downs went on the DL). I wonder if he's reacted to this one differently or if he's steaming again after watching Carlson's ineffectiveness two nights ago.
Lugnut Fan - Thursday, August 13 2009 @ 02:35 PM EDT (#204666) #
I think Accardo took the last one a little harder because he had family and friends in Oakland to watch him.  The broadcast after he was reactivated they stated that he never left town as he had 72 hours to report to Vegas.  I would guess he took this one a little better since he probably expected it.
TamRa - Thursday, August 13 2009 @ 03:02 PM EDT (#204669) #
Honestly, I understand the business reasons for doing this, but on an emotional level i really haven't liked the handling of Accardo this year. As much as we have more expensive guys we need to move out of the pen this winter, I Kinda would like to see Accardo get a full chance somewhere else if we could get value in return for him.

I sure hope if he's here next year he's a fixture and not the "end of the bench" guy.

Jays2010 - Thursday, August 13 2009 @ 03:40 PM EDT (#204670) #
Depending on the return, I'd like to see the Jays move one valuable reliever (League/Downs/Frasor/Accardo) and one less valuable reliever (Carlson!) Not exactly sure what Accardo would fetch, but League might bring back something nice. I fear that Downs' value was greatest a little before the deadline...but it seems that teams do not value relievers a whole lot on the trade market right now...and there is no point giving these players away. For next year, the potential lefties for the 'pen are Downs/Tallet/Carlson/Castro and possibly Purcey/D Romero. Righties include Frasor/Accardo/League/Camp/Roenicke/ Janssen and possibly Stewart (though I'm guessing he'll start '10 in the AAA rotation. And I'm sure I'm missing people and there will be spring training invitations etc. For a team that has major issues at 3B/SS/C/CF (yes CF) going forward, I'd love to see the bullpen depth be used to address some of this, espescially for players whose stars have faded (Jordan Schaefer?)

Stewart (though I'm guessing he'll start '10 in the AAA rotation

I think they are going to groom him into the closer role. His numbers in the minors certainly dictate that, and with all the starters healthy the Jays already have a fairly young and quality rotation as it stands. Add Jenkins and Paxton to the mix (if they live up to the hype and come fast) Then there are an abundance of quality starters in the system, but not many power arm closer types. Farquhar and Collins being the most promising. But thats just my opinion.

Stewart is being stretched into a starter by us, the same thing Cincinnati was doing.  The only reason why he's even in the bullpen is because he's hit his innings limit and they dont want his arm to fall off.
