Every organization has at least one player who has all the talent in the world, but they just continue to drive management (and more importantly fans) crazy with their inconsistencies. In Toronto, we have David Purcey... or, Mr. One-Good-Game, then Mr. One-Bad-Game. Unfortunately for Las Vegas, last night was his bad game.

Portland 4 Las Vegas 2

As you can guess from the teaser above, as well as the title, David Purcey had a rough outing. The southpaw allowed four runs on five hits and six walks in 4.2 innings of work. He struck out two batters. TJ Beam worked 2.1 scoreless innings, while the recently-demoted Brian Wolfe provided two scoreless innings. Kyle Phillips (C/3B) continues to hit well in triple-A and had two hits to keep his average at .343. Randy Ruiz was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Jonathan Diaz was also 1-for-3. Jason Lane was 1-for-4 with a double.

Harrisburgh 4 New Hampshire 0

The Fisher Cats' bats were unable to do anything against a trio of Nationals farmhands. Yikes. Jays pitching prospect Luis Perez was doomed by one poor innings in which he allowed all four runs. Overall, the southpaw allowed four runs on seven hits and zero walks. He struck out six and induced 12 groundball outs, compared to just four flyball outs. Sean Stidfole worked a scoreless inning. Leadoff hitter Todd Donovan led the offense (if you can call it that) with two hits. Adam Calderone, David Cooper, Brian Jeroloman, Chris Gutierrez, and Luis Sanchez each managed one hit. Brad Emaus was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and is in a mid-season funk.

 Dunedin 9 Palm Beach 5

Hey, a win! Starter Vince Bongiovanni allowed just two runs on seven hits and one walk in six innings of work. Leon Boyd allowed two runs in one inning, while Zach Dials allowed one run in his one inning. Darin Mastroianni and Kevin Ahrens each had two hits. Moises Sierra also had two hits, scored a run and drove in three. Jonathan Jaspe was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, thanks to a homer. Justin Jackson was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Fort Wayne 3 Lansing 0

This game was scoreless until the eighth inning, when the Padres affiliate scored all three runs. Lansing out-hit its opponent seven to four in the game but still took the loss. Chase Lirette worked 5.2 innings and allowed two hits and three walks. He also struck out five batters. Hunter Moody worked a scoreless inning and struck out five. Yorman Mayora allowed all three runs thanks to two hits and two walks. Johermyn Chavez and Justin McClanahan each had two hits. Brian Van Kirk was 1-for-4 with a double and two strikeouts.

Three (Meh) Stars:
3. Moises Sierra for two hits and three RBI
2. Vince Bongiovanni for allowing two runs over six innings
1. Chase Lirette for working 5.2 scoreless innings while rehabbing a shoulder injury.

David Purcey is to the Blue Jays what Homer Bailey is to the Reds.

What's up y'all? I'm new around these parts. I'm eyebleaf, I blog at www.sportsandthecity.com, and I just wanted to say hello. Been reading Batter's Box for a long time, and finally signed up.

I'm wondering when you think Purcey might be back up with the Jays?

Doing a quick check at MILB I see Jackson is hitting 296 over his last 10 games with 8 walks and 8 strikeouts which is a drastic improvement over his full season figures of 231/342/285 with 22 walks and 51 strikeouts in 39 games.  Ugh, his first 29 games he had 14 walks vs 43 strikeouts (240 per 162 games).  His Slg over those last 10 games is 444 while his estimated OBP is 457 (walks+hits divided by AB+walks).  Now, if he keeps _that_ up we have a keeper.

Welcome, eyebleaf.

I'm not sure that Purcey will be the next to be called up.  Purcey, when wild, taxes bullpens and doesn't take advantage of a fine defensive outfit.

eyebleaf, I know you already know I like Purcey but, with his last two starts, I think he's given back all the good will he might have been building up down there - unless there were extenuating circumstances to account for the wildness.

I now think he is very unlikely to be recalled before the Break. His inconsistancy means he's going to have to string together maybe 5-7 impressive outings before he gets back in the conversation for promotion.

Snider has been placed on the 7-day DL.  Anyone know why?
Gerry - Thursday, June 04 2009 @ 09:51 PM EDT (#200880) #
I heard on the radio that Snider's back was bothering him.

I'm sure throwing the wild pitch that Barrett injured himself chasing (I think he fell on a bat donut or something else in the on-deck circle) probably didn't endear Purcey to Jays management, either.

Ive noticed Boyd and Dials are down with Dunedin. Any idea why? Did notice Boyds ERA is a touch high but didnt know what Dials was down for.

Purcey's problems are four possibles:  1). Inconsistency with his landing area;  2). Incorrect arm angle; 3). Improper ball grip for the pitch thrown, and/or, 4). Lack on concentration/insufficient work ethic.  David Purcey is good enough to pitch at the major league level.  Surely someone can find out why he can't be consistent, the talent and technology exist within the Organization to find out why.

Eric Thames made the Florida State League All Stars despite not playing a game in a month...I'm not sure how I feel about that.

When the Jays moved Farquhar up to AA, Boyd was moved down.  It's just  a case of the Jays prefering Farquhar.  Dials was on the DL for a while and recently came back.  He is probably in Dunedin to work himself back into shape and make sure he is game ready for AA.

Shouldn't it be Dr. Purcey and Mr. Hyde?

Thanks for the info Gerry. Was a little baffled but now I see.

I'm begining to worry that Purcey is going to be our own version of a Daniel Cabrera type who never figures out how to consistantly employ his talents.

He's certainly had stretchs where everything worked and that gave me encouragement but I find this season from him (so far) troubling

It's worth bearing in mind that there is no rule anywhere that says guys like Purcey eventually figure it out. He may, but baseball history is littered with guys who didn't, even after all the coaching in the world.
