The affiliates had some good pitching tonight.  Fabio Castro pitched six shutout innings, Alsn Farina started and did well.  Tim Collins was outstanding, again, in relief.  Henderson Alvarez and John Anderson also pitched well.

Las Vegas 4  Salt Lake 11  - Game 1

Brian Burres got the start but was gone after one batter in the fourth.  Burrs allowed five runs on six hits in 3 innings.  Sean Stidfole relieved Burres but he gave up three more runs in just two thirds of an inning and Vegas were down 8-0.  Vegas scored two runs in the fifth, Russ Adams and JP Arencibia hit back-to-back doubles followed by an RBI single from Buck Coats.

Adrian Martin came on in the fifth having been called up to take Bill Murphy's roster spot.  But he gave up two runs in two thirds of an inning.  Randy Ruiz hit a two run home run in the sixth.  But that was it, an 11-4 final.  Adams and Arencibia had two hits each.

Las Vegas 6  Salt Lake 4  - Game 2

Las Vegas jumped out to a lead in game 2, Ruiz and Jason Lane doubled and Aaron Mathews singled in a run to make it 2-0.  The 51's padded their lead in the third when Brett Harper hit a three run home run.  Wade Miller had pitched hitless ball for two innings but Salt Lake put together three stright singles to lead off the bottom of the third.  One run scored on a ground ball but then Terry Evans hit a three run home run and now it was a 5-4 game.  Miller loaded the bases again in the fourth but he escaped without giving up a run.  In the fifth Lane and Harper singled with Lane moving to third.  Mathews then hit into a double play scoring the insurance run.  Miller came back to strike out the side in the fifth, Bryan Bullington pitched a shutout sixth and Jeremy Accardo a shutout seventh for the save.

Lane, Harper and Mathews had two hits each.

Connecticut 0  New Hampshire 2

Good pitching by New Hampshire, Fabio Castro pitched six strong innings and Celson Polanco, David Shinskie and Leon Boyd each pitched a shutout inning in relief.  The game was scoreless until the eighth inning when the Fisher Cats scored two runs without a hit, five walks in one inning are great when you only have five hits in the game.  Sean Shoffit had two hits to bump his average to .238, Jeroloman and Emaus were hitless and now their batting averages are down to .280 and .320 respectively.  But worry not, New Hampshire is always a tough place to hit in the cool April weather.

Dunedin 3  Daytona 1

This was another game with excellent pitching.  Alan Farina got the start after pitching last season in the bullpen, he pitched four innings and gave up one run on two hits and two walks.  Tim Collins followed with three perfect innings with six K's.  Bobby Bell and Danny Farquhar added a shutout inning each.

The Jays were losing 1-0 in the seventh when back to back doubles by Moises Sierra and Kevin Ahrens tied the game.  In the eighth Darin Mastroianni singled and scored on a double by Eric Thames.  Thames then scored on an error.

Dunedin had just six hits.

Lansing 3  South Bend 1 - Game 1

Henderson Alvarez had a shaky start, three hits and one run allowed in the first inning.  But then he settled down and gave up three hits over the next four shutout innings.  Michael Barbara pitched two shutout innings to get the save.

In the fifth the Lugnuts scored three runs, Tylor Pastornicky had a two out double; Brian Van Kirk singled him home to tie the game.  Johermyn Chavez doubled Van Kirk to third and Jon Del Campo doubled in both runs to put Lansing ahead 3-1.

Van Kirk was 3-4, Chavez was 2-4, both doubles.

Lansing 2  South Bend 4 - Game 2

John Anderson got the start in game two and was cruising until he gave up an unearned run in the third.  In the fourth Justin McClanahan hit a two run home run to give Lansing the lead.  Anderson was victimized by his defense again in the fifth, with two outs he walked a hitter and an error and a single later Lansing were down 3-2.  Matt Daly gave up an insurance run in the sixth.

Anderson gave up three hits in his five innings and no earned runs.  Lansing had five hits, McClanahan had two.

3 star selection

3rd star - Henderson Alvarez
2nd star - Tim Collins
1st star - Fabio Castro

Is this standard practice for someone like Tim Collins, to use him as a long reliever in the minors because you don't project him as a starter at the big league level? The kid has 13k 0bb 1h in 7.1ip of relief to open the season, that's quite the start.

Collins is amazing. I can't help but think that if he were 6 inches taller he'd be in the Jays Top 10 prospects instead of #30. I really hope he keeps this level of success up, proving every scout along the way wrong.

Tim Collins is 19 years old and short and slight.  The club has given him long relief outings, like last night's 3 innings, in an effort, I imagine, to reduce the risk of arm injury.

Joe Inglett played both games yesterday at shortstop.  If he can learn to play it passably well, he will be valuable as a 2B-SS-3B-OF supersub at some point..

If Collins was 6 inches taller, he probably wouldn't have gone undrafted.

I do hope he makes it to the majors. I get the impression he'd be fun to watch.

Collins success is obviously surprising (or he wouldn't have been undrafted).  But I think it's more interesting to look at him compared to Trystan Magnuson.

Both came to the Jays at the same time.  Magnuson was a sandwich round pick in 2007, a 5th year college senior, and a big (6-7) pitcher.  Collins was an small, undrafted, high school pitcher.  Collins had a lot of success in Lansing last year and is off to a great start this year.  Magnuson struggled in Lansing and doesn't seem to be much better in his first stint in Dunedin.

The choice of Magnuson did cause raised eyebrows at the time.  He will be 24 in June.

If Magnusson hadn't been playing in the College World Series he would have been a free agent since his playing career would have been finished before the draft.  Keith Law stated at the time that several teams would have been interested in him and that he would have signed for probably a $1M bonus which is basically what the Jays got him for.  Law was high on him as well.

Actually it's a Keith Law interview with Batters Box from 2008 where the Magnusson info comes from.  I'm not sure how to post the link.

Converting Magnuson to starting looks like a mistake in hindsight. Perhaps it was a bad idea to begin with, given his age, though the Jays have had a few successes with that method.

Magnuson signed for $462,500.

about 100k under slot.

I suspect a lot of guys who are converted to starting in the minors is just so teams can build up a few innings on their arms in a steady fashion then shift back to the pen in the majors if needed.  In relief it is hard to get enough innings or stability to develop a kid I suspect.

It's good to see Eric Thames off to a encouraging start.  I imagine he'll be bolstering the Fisher Cat's offense at some point this year.

... Cues up I Wish by Skee-Lo.....

I have a bad feeling Tim Collins will get Gronkiewicz'ed. Even with his performance last season, the scouts still believe he will get exposed once he reaches the upper levels of the minors. If he can continue to pitch well, I hope he gets a legit chance to become a major leaguer. It's amazing that a guy who weighs around 155pds can throw a 91mph fastball. Next to Cecil, Collins is my favorite player in the Jays minor league system.

Ryan Day - Thursday, April 16 2009 @ 03:03 PM EDT (#198435) #
Collins is left-handed, which gives him a pretty big advantage over Gronkiewicz. A hard-throwing lefty can always find a job, even if he's short. If his arm holds up and he keeps striking out everyone in sight, he should get a lot of chances in MLB.
Thomas - Thursday, April 16 2009 @ 03:49 PM EDT (#198436) #
Also, aside from the fact one is right and one is left-handed, another key difference between Collins and Gronk is that, last year, at 18 Collins did what Gronkiewicz did at 23.

I don't worry about Collins getting a chance, as long as he keeps putting up fantastic numbers.
Mike Green - Thursday, April 16 2009 @ 03:59 PM EDT (#198437) #
Collins also has more juice on his fastball than Gronk.  That captures the attention of scouts and development people, some of whom remember Ron Guidry.

"Collins also has more juice on his fastball than Gronk. That captures the attention of scouts and development people, some of whom remember Ron Guidry."

Or Bobby Shantz.... ahem, I really don't quite remember him but he was listed as 5'-6", 142lb, a southpaw, and also had himself a pretty fine career.

Mike Green - Thursday, April 16 2009 @ 05:54 PM EDT (#198442) #
Shantz sure did.  Here's a period piece from Time Magazine on him.

Thank goodness he's still young then - lots of time for the 'Worchester Whirlwind' (Sorry the name just came to me after reading a litle about Ron Guidry and Bobby Shantz) to show the Jays that he should be given at shot at starting.
