The New Hampshire Fisher Cats kicked off the 2009 minor league season tonight.   Brad Emaus continued his hot spring with three doubles and four RBI's.  Marc Rzepczynski got the win and recorded nine strikeouts in five innings.Plus we have some comments from Dick Scott on the opening day rosters.

New Britain 3  New Hampshire 7

Marc Rzepczynski got the first start of the year for the Fisher Cats and he needed help to get out of the first inning.  Zep issued a walk after recording the first two outs and that was followed by a double but Todd Donovan and Chris Gutierrez combined to get the out at home plate.  In the bottom of the first Donovan walked then doubles by Brad Emaus, David Cooper and Nick Gorneault made it 3-0.  Sean Shoffit singled to make it 4-0 but Shoffit was thown out to the end the inning.

In the second inning Zep again recorded two outs but then an error by Gutierrez kept the inning alive.  A single and a walk loaded the bases but Zep was able to get the third out to dodge trouble.  In the bottom of the second Brian Jeroloman singled and Donovan again walked.  Emaus doubled them both in but Cooper and Dopirak struck out to end the threat.

Zep gave up a two out double in the third but his luck ran out in the fourth.  A single and two walks loaded the bases for New Britain with one out.  An error and a ground ball allowed two runs to score.   Zep struck out the side in the third and fifth innings.  Meanwhile the Fisher Cats had nine in a row retired from the third to the fifth and after five it was 6-2.

Rzepczynski pitched five innings and gave up two runs, one earned on four hits and four walks.  Zep recorded nine K's.

David Shinskie came on in relief and walked the first batter.  After one out Shinskie allowed a single and an error let the lead runner advance to third base.  The runner then scored on a ground out to make it 6-3.  Zach Dials pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings

In the bottom of the seventh back to back doubles by Donovan and Emaus added another run to make it a 7-3 game.

Adrian Martin gave up an unearned run in the ninth but the Fisher Cats won 7-3.

Emaus was the hitting star, he was 3-4 with three doubles and four RBI's.  Todd Dovovan was 1-2 with 2 walks and three runs scored.  Sean Shoffit was the only other Fisher Cat to have a multi-hit game, he was 2-4.

Three Stars

3rd star - Marc Rzepczynski

2nd star - Todd Donovan

1st star - Brad Emaus

The Jays Farm Director Dick Scott answered some questions for Batters Box regarding opening day rosters.

Of the players starting on the DL are their injuries serious enough that you would expect any of them to miss two months or more?  (Boone, Ray, Romero, Ebarb, Fahey, Sobolewski, Haerther)

None of the injuries are serious. Mostly keeping them in warm weather until it is their turn to pitch. All should be with their teams by the 25th of this month. Sobolewski and Haerther should be a couple of weeks as well. Ebarb had a meniscus repair on his knee and will miss 6 weeks. Fahey will likely be out the longest with both wrist and shoulder problems.

When do you expect the three starting pitchers with visa problems to be in camp (Rodriguez, Perez, Carreno)?

All of the visa issues have been taken care of. I expect both Rodriguez and Carreno in Dunedin this week. Castillo Perez may have more issues with his visa, so he may be a while.

Will Magee and Magnuson both start for Dunedin?

Magee will be a starter. He didn't have a great spring so we are sending him back to Dunedin to get on track. Needs to work on his command of all his pitches and tighten up his secondary pitches. Magnuson will now pitch out of the bullpen. We all feel he is more comfortable there. We have dropped his arm slot slightly to give his ball more sink and it seems to be working well for him.

Is Eric Eiland back in extended due to that's where he needs to be developmentaly or due to other factors such as an injury in the spring.

Eiland is in Extended to get everyday at bats. He struggled this spring and seemed to have changed his swing which caused him to struggle. He shouldn't be there too long and will return to Lansing as soon as he gets back on track.

Same question for Cody Crowell?

Cody Crowell needs extra time to get his command back and a few mph. We are putting him on a long toss program to build arm strength. I envision him landing at either Lansing or Dunedin within the first 6 weeks.

How will Cooper and Dopirak split playing time?  Will either switch positions?

Cooper and Dopirak will play 1st base and DH. They will play everyday at either spot. They both will get plenty of time at first base and both should get 450 at bats.

When we spoke at the end of last season you said that the 2008 high school kids drafted were more raw that the 2007 group.  Even so you have sent them to Lansing.  Is it better to muddle through and learn in lansing than to be more successful in extended?

We are pushing some players this year to Lansing i.e. Pastornicky, Wilson, Brisker, Jimenez. We would much rather challenge these guys to see how they respond. They make take their lumps, but we feel they will gain much more experience playing there than extended spring. We always get surprised by these guys and we will never find out if they can play unless we push them. There biggest adjustment might just be the weather as they are all from warm weather climates.

Welcome back, Gerry and the rest of the minor league crew.

Zep is one of my favourite prospects.  It sounds like he was a little rusty.  Four walks in five innings is definitely out-of-character.  Nine strikeouts and only three ground balls is also unusual for him.  I wonder if he was up in the zone, or if the Rock Cats were simply flailing at stuff in the dirt.

That cleared up a few things I was really wondering about - particularly that it was visa issues that kept KR and Cerrano off the opening rosters.

Did he give any clue about where they would be assigned? One presumes extended spring until they are up to speed.

I still want to know what happened to Joe Wice.

So the Magnuson starter experiment mercifully ends. That experiment I never understood. Raw older college guy with one, maybe two ML quality pitches?  I hope they learn from this and keep Evan Crawford in the pen. Speaking of which, where is Crawford? Hurt?

Will Carreno really be reporting to Dunedin? I realize he's 22, but that's fairly aggressive for a Latin pitcher with the Jays.

No word on where Ray will report to? Vegas or NH?

Great stuff Gerry.  Really enjoy the all of the minor league coverage from the writers here at da Box, absolutely top notch and what keeps me coming back.  Should be an exciting summer watching a crop of the most eagerly anticipated prospects these parts have seen for a while.  Props to Dick Scott as well for continuing to drop all of those golden nuggets on prospects.  Now to sit back and watch Adam Loewen develop into the next Justin Morneau...

Only three groundball outs (one was a double play), but in total he only got five outs on balls in play...his GB:FB was still 1.5:1.

The walks might be his Achilles heel this season; four in 5 IP is definitely high by anyone's standards, but even last year his BB/9 was over 3.1 against much lighter competition.

Anyone have any information on where Evan Crawford is? Extended?

Gerry - Thursday, April 09 2009 @ 11:37 AM EDT (#198092) #
In the pre- spring training rosters Crawford was listed as being in extended spring training along with the 18 year old dominican players.  I don't know for sure but my guess is that that means he has had surgery and he was unable to participate in spring training.

I was in attendance at the NH opener and have a little info from what observations I could make while trying to keep myself warm...

I thought the homeplate umpire had a tight strike zone, early on in the ballgame anyway.  Zep had the batters fooled on some effective off-speed stuff.  Which I thought was encouraging considering the chilly conditions.  He seemed to get tired rather early as his release point seemed to drop as the innings wore on.  He was hitting 87-89 on the gun with his fastball consistantly.

I was pleasantly surprised that the offense showed up to play.  I've come to expect little to no offense the past several seasons due to the weather, so maybe this won't be the case this year.

Other than the 1st Gutierrez error, which was acceptable considering he had to charge a slow roller behind the mound, the defense was attrocious!  .  Kyle Phillips just didn't look comfortable at 3rd base.

The last thing that caught my eye, was Zach Dials coming on in the 7th inning.  I had pictured him being the closer until Leon Boyd was activated, but apparently that isn't the case.  That's all for now!

FisherCat, I really appreciate the first-hand accounts, so if you're ever at a game be sure to let us know your thoughts, thanks.

Gerry, looking forward to another season of excellent minor-league coverage.

It's been a while. Where the heck is Reynolds? Is he still around?

Anyway, I'm still working for the FCats and managing to take a few photographs as well. Last nights opener was cold indeed, but the game was a lot of fun to watch.

The game review has already been covered here pretty well, but I do have a few notes of my own. Kyle Phillips who played c/1b last year started at 3rd last night. I did speak with Kyle during Tuesday evenings workout at the Merch and he indicated that the team had approached him about playing 3rd. He had played 3rd in high school (I believe this is what he told me) so he was up for the challenge. The guy is a true pro and a great guy to boot. Kyle did look a little out of his element as he handled a few grounders and committed 1 error. However, he did make a diving catch to end the game!! He will find his way at the hot corner soon enough.

If it hasn't already been mentioned here on BB, Kyle's older brother Jason played in the bigs with the Mets, Dodgers & Jays and took a position as a coach with the Mariners during this past spring training.

As for Dials coming on early in the game. I think the coaching staff is going with a closer by committee for the time being. The focus right now is to get everyone innings. I have to say the bullpen looks like it could prove to be the backbone of this club for the '09 season. Just my gut feeling from what I've seen, heard & researched.

If you're at all interested, I have posted a few images of Zeppo, Emaus, Cooper & Rommie Lewis. LINK

Woohoo!  The minor league season coverage begins. My interest in the Jays prospects runs a very close second to big league coverage so now I consider baseball to be fully in season!  Thanks Gerry, Fishercatfan and everyody else who writes, posts pictures, links or game and player info. It is all much appreciated.

I see Adam Loewen is on the DL to begin the year, any idea how long he'll be out for or what the injury is?

By the way, love the minor league coverage, well done, keep it coming.

Not-so-old friend Joel Collins has apparently been picked up by the Pirates organization and assigned to High-A Lynchburg where he joins another not-so-old friend Chi-hung Cheng.
